1989 Topps Hockey

I've been discouraged by a lot of the recent baseball card releases, so I picked up a couple of older hockey packs and will be ripping all three of them for your reading pleasure (or pain) here on A Pack a Day. To start things off we have a pack of the first hockey cards I ever collected, 1989 Topps (I actually collected the O-Pee-Chee set but this is close enough). If you appreciate hockey cards you may enjoy this. If you're not a big hockey person but you like a good mullet, then read on. If you don't like hockey cards or mullets you're a terrible person, just move on.

21 - Mike Bullard - Philadelphia Flyers

47 - Bernie Nicholls - Los Angeles Kings - Here we see Bernie fresh off of a monster 1988-89 season in which he accumulated 70 goals and 150 points, both career highs. I bet if you were asked to list the only 8 players ever to score 70 times in a season you wouldn't think of him.
150 - Dave Manson - Chicago Blackhawks
29 - Andy Brickley - Boston Bruins - Andy is still involved with the Bruins organization to this day, and is a member of the NESN broadcast team, which televises most Bruins games.
51 - Glen Wesley - Boston Bruins - Damn, two Bruins in a row. Glen Wesley was to hockey what Randy Johnson is to baseball. Quite frankly, he's just one ugly dude. On top of that he inflicted quite a bit of damage on the Whalers over the years. I never liked Glen Wesley.
13 - Dave Barr - Detroit Red Wings
180 - Aaron Broten - New Jersey Devils
186 - Brett Hull - St. Louis Blues - Awesome card, highlight of the pack by far. This is everything a late 80s hockey card should be. Brett is pretty excited to be in a Blues uniform, and he should be as he was a complete scoring machine during this era.

Sticker #29 - Minnesota North Stars - If only I knew where my old hockey helmet is at...
168 - Zarley Zalapski - Pittsburgh Penguins
127 - Jimmy Carson - Edmonton Oilers
59 - Phil Housley - Buffalo Sabres
128 - Larry Murphy - Minnesota North Stars - Larry was a defensive legend who enjoyed a very lengthy career in the NHL. I don't usually think of him as a Minnesota North Star though.
35 - Randy Wood - New York Islanders
Pretty great pack overall. This is a cheesy set but I'm a sucker for the blue top and bottom borders paired with the "ice" side borders. I actually have this entire set already so if anyone's interested in any of these let me know. The next pack will be even older than these.
