1982 garry templeton

in december of 1981, the cardinals traded garry templeton to the padres for ozzie smith.  there were some other players involved, but those two were the primary pieces.  here's templeton's subsequent 1982 o-pee-chee card:

note that o-pee-chee puts the trade date as february, 1982.  there was a player to be named later component to the trade on both sides, and those players (luis deleon and al olmsted) weren't identified until february, thus officially completing the trade.  it's a nice touch/coincidence that the performance text under his stats refers to a game against the padres.

templeton had fallen out of favor with the white rat in st. louis and got a fresh start in san diego.  he helped the pads get to the world series in 1984, batting over .300 in both the nlcs and the fall classic, but he was always compared to the wizard in terms of shortstop prowess.  templeton did make the 1985 all-star team, but appeared only as a pinch-hitter (he singled) as ozzie was voted to start the game.

1977 garry templeton

garry templeton was a member of topps' all-star rookie team for the 1976 season, but you wouldn't know it by his 1977 o-pee-chee card:
here's the topps front with the rookie cup nestled in nicely against templeton's knee and the autograph pushed slightly to the right:
now the o-pee-chee back:

notice that o-pee-chee didn't strike the text on the back referring to the honor bestowed upon templeton.  i also enjoy the ray kroc cartoon, especially with the hindsight that templeton would later be acquired by kroc's padres for ozzie smith.

templeton had a big year in 1977 - 200 hits and a league-leading 18 triples.  he also made the all-star team, but dave concepcion was the starter for the nl so templeton's 1978 o-pee-chee (and topps) card was also unadorned.
