this week, martial synthesizer sounds from "the son of p.m.", khabuan mukda! khabuan is best known for his outstanding organ work in the shadow bands of the '60s (p.m. pocket music, p.m. 7 jupiter, etc.) created by his adoptive father, the incomparable phayong mukda. in the '70s, while the the rest of the pocket music guys settled down as don sonrabiap's backing band (p.m. 5), khabuan apparently went off to do his own thing on the electone. while our previous solo record found khabuan taking on top pop hits of the day, the content of this tape is essentially "switched-on" (à la wendy carlos) versions of marches variously extolling the royal institution, armed services, and (paradoxically?) heroes of popular uprisings against those forces (see track 2: "the heroes of 14 october"). enjoy!

some more great old electone sounds this week, though unlike the previous albums (here and here), this one's got a big name attached: the "son of p.m.", mr. khabuan mukda!! khabuan is best known for his outstanding electric organ work in the "shadow" bands of the 60's (p.m. pocket music, p.m. 7 jupiter, etc.) created by his father, the incomparable phayong mukda. in the 70's, while the the rest of the pocket music guys settled down as don sonrabiap's backing band (p.m. 5), khabuan apparently went off to do his own thing. what this was exactly i had no idea, until i came across this tape! seeing that this is the 4th of who knows how many volumes, we can assume that electone stuff was keeping khabuan busy in the early 80's.. and lucky for us, as he comes up with some nice sounds here, filtering "string" hits of the day through a sci-fi soundtrack sensibility. enjoy!!

here it is; the long-awaited first volume of "electone international for dancing"!! as stated in the description for volume ii, the yamaha corporation's electone organ was a pretty big hit in a lot of asian countries, thailand being no exception. while primarily thought of in the united states as a remnant of the "home electronic organ" trend of mid-century, the electone has become something of a studio staple in much of asia, and defines a great deal of thai pop especially. like the first tape, this one features another great melange of foreign dance hits; american, japanese, chinese, etc. adapted for the electone organ, with the support of some acoustic percussion. still haven't been able to find out anything about the artist here, so again if anyone happens to have some info, please chime in! otherwise, just enjoy!!!

a bit of an odd one this week... thai electone sounds! the yamaha corporation's electone organ was a pretty big hit in a lot of asian countries, thailand being no exception. while primarily thought of in the united states as a remnant of the "home electronic organ" trend of mid-century, the electone has become something of a studio staple in asia, and defines a great deal of thai pop especially. there are even big competitions held, presumedly to see who can get the most sound out of the thing! (see thailand's 2007 competitor, 14-year-old ปุณยาพร ลิ้มภักดีสถาพร (punyaphon limpakdeesathaphon) here!) this tape, which i can find hardly any information about, comprises mostly instrumental interpretations of foreign dance hits; american, japanese, korean, chinese, etc. strange and fun synth noises abound, and there's the occasional acoustic percussion (drum kit, bongos or what-have-you) supplementing the rhythm track; something like thai "library music"! there is no artist listed, just english song titles with the dance style indicated beside it in thai. if anyone happens to know who's playing, please do tell! otherwise, just enjoy!!!
