MARVIN WILLIAMS WATCH, GAME 6

The Atlanta Hawks fell yet again, sinking to 0-6 on the year with an 85-84 home loss to Memphis which was at least close.

2004 Bremerton High grad Marvin Williams put up 12 points in 19 minutes off the bench. He shot 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line. He grabbed four boards (one offensive) and recorded an assist along with three fouls.

266 REVISITED

Four years ago today, Shaun Alexander ran for 266 yards against the Oakland Raiders.

David and I were there on that cold as hell night at Husky Stadium.

Here's my post from two years ago on the greatest sporting event I've ever seen in person. I guess you can call this post "This Day In Sports And Bremertonians History".

MARVIN WILLIAMS WATCH, GAME 5

The Atlanta Hawks continued their winless slide, dropping a 102-95 decision to the Lakers to make it their fifth straight defeat to start off the season. In 28 minutes off the bench, Bremerton 2004 grad Marvin Williams had his best shooting night of the season, scoring 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 shooting from the line. Whistled for three fouls, he also pulled down two rebounds and blocked two shots.

GAME 17: AVALANCHE 5, CANUCKS 3

[posted in full Sat ~12p]

Coming off of two hard-fought games in Calgary that came out as losses, how would the Canucks fare against the now-hot Colorado Avalanche, who had won five of six games coming into Thursday's matchup at the Garage?

They'd come out incredibly flat. The second period was much better than the first, but does any NHL team really deserve to win after giving up four goals in the first period?

1st period
With not even a minute gone in the game, Ed Jovanovski lost control of the puck in the right-wing corner of his own end, and Andrew Brunette centered quickly to the tape of Ian Laperriere driving the net. What happened afterward was...well, it was an avalanche of goals.
»» 1, COLORADO, Ian Laperriere 5 (Andrew Brunette, Antti Laaksonen) 0:46
»» AVALANCHE 1, CANUCKS 0
Patrice Brisebois fired a shot from the blue line that looked to be initially stopped by Alex Auld, but Joe Sakic was there in front to chip it through.
»» 2, COLORADO, Joe Sakic 6 (Patrice Brisebois, Alex Tanguay) 3:49
»» AVALANCHE 2, CANUCKS 0
Jovanovski had a pass from his own blue line intercepted as the play rushed back into the Vancouver end. Jovanovski blew a tire and fell down, and the Avalanche had a 2-on-0 rush for an easy give-and-go as Marek Svatos finished it off, beating Auld short side over the left shoulder.
»» 3, COLORADO, Marek Svatos 7 (Steve Konowalchuk) 6:38
»» AVALANCHE 3, CANUCKS 0
Antti Laaksonen put a puck on Auld that went off the goalie's equipment, bounced high into the air, and went into the net over Auld.
»» 4, COLORADO, Laaksonen 7 (unassisted) 12:51
»» AVALANCHE 4, CANUCKS 0
The Canucks were outshot by a mere margin of 18-5 in the first period. They killed off three penalties, but it didn't matter. The Vancouver team was booed mercilessly by the sellout crowd of 18630 as they skated off the ice at the end of the period.

2nd period
Atoning a bit for his giveaway earlier, Jovanovski camped out in front of David Aebischer's stick side and waited as Markus Naslund fed him with a pass from the end boards. Jovanovski
»» 5, VANCOUVER, powerplay, Ed Jovanovski 4 (Markus Naslund, Brendan Morrison) 1:17
»» AVALANCHE 4, CANUCKS 1
Brendan Morrison centered to Todd Bertuzzi in the slot, and Bertuzzi did what Canuck fans expect him to do, wristing it past Aebischer stick side.
»» 6, VANCOUVER, Todd Bertuzzi 4 (Morrison, Naslund) 10:45
»» AVALANCHE 4, CANUCKS 2
The Canucks did much better, outshooting the Avalanche 14-3 in the period, and they trailed by a more acceptable margin of 21-19 on shots. They were 1-for-3 on the power play in the period and killed off the only Colorado power play chance.

3rd period
The Vancouver hopes for a comeback victory came crashing when Karlis Skrastins put up a shot from the left point that may have gone off of Nolan Baumgartner in front of the net, but that definitely got past Auld.
»» 7, COLORADO, shorthanded, Karlis Skrastins 1 (Konowalchuk, Laperriere) 7:57
»» AVALANCHE 5, CANUCKS 2
In the too-little-too-late department, the Canucks did a fair job of battling for the puck along the boards, and Henrik Sedin flung the puck from the end boards to Richard Park in the slot, who beat Aebischer stick side.
»» 8, VANCOUVER, Richard Park 4 (Henrik Sedin, Anson Carter) 18:17
»» AVALANCHE 5, CANUCKS 3
The teams deadlocked with nine shots apiece. Vancouver killed two penalties, but they couldn't convert on four power plays in the first half of the period.

Naslund 0-2-2
Bertuzzi 1-0-1
Jovanovski 1-0-1

H Sedin 0-1-1

Another loss to a division opponent. The team needs a shot of confidence, a barrage of goals, something. Having Dan Cloutier back might help if he's healthy. He at least dressed as a backup for this game and is on the way back after suffering the concussion against Colorado when his head bounced off the goal and off the ice. The main positive out of this game was that the big line accounted for five points. The bad thing was that entire first period.

The only plus skater for the Canucks was the newly recalled defenseman Sven Butenschon, who was plus-1. The minus skaters were aplenty. At minus-1 were Nolan Baumgartner, Trevor Linden, Markus Naslund, Ryan Kesler, and Daniel Sedin. Minus-2 skaters included Lee Goren and Henrik Sedin. Minus-3 skaters were Bryan Allen and Ed Jovanovski (ouch). All other skaters were even.

Vancouver won 31 of 59 faceoffs (53%). Brendan Morrison was 10-for-16, Linden was 2-for-6, Kesler was 5-for-10, Henrik Sedin was 11-for-20, and Bertuzzi was 3-for-5. Naslund led the team with seven shots. Mattias Ohlund, Linden, and Jovanovski delivered three hits apiece.

The Canucks have lost three straight and are still stuck on 10 wins, now with a record of 10-5-2. Colorado, who has now won six of seven, lurks behind the Canucks by a mere two points with two games in hand.

MARVIN WILLIAMS WATCH, GAME 4

GAME 16: FLAMES 4, CANUCKS 3

Flames 4, Canucks 3
AP/CP photo -- Jeff McIntosh

[posted in full Thu ~1p]

I could blame this on the amount of stuff I had to study, but the other reason there isn't a lot in this post is because I fell asleep about halfway through the first period and woke up about an hour into the postgame show.

That's where the NHL.com goal reel comes in, along with the superstats page.

The bottom line is that the Canucks ended up getting swept in the doubleheader in Cowtown. They at least got Beyan Allen back from injury and scored against Miikka Kiprusoff in this game, true, but the way it ended was quite undesirable. Highly undesirable, in fact.

1st period
Dion Phaneuf brought the puck behind the net and the puck was centered, where Alex Auld made the initial stop but the puck leaked behind him, and Chuck Kobasew drilled home the uncovered puck.
»» 1, CALGARY, powerplay, Chuck Kobasew 5 (Steve Reinprecht, Dion Phaneuf) 5:50
»» FLAMES 1, CANUCKS 0
Vancouver outshot Calgary 9-8 in the first period. The Canucks went 0-for-4 on the power play in the period while the Flames were 1-for-3.

2nd period
Todd Bertuzzi flashed a glimpse of his potential as Lee Goren kicked him the puck along the boards behind the net, and Bertuzzi shook off Phaneuf and came just past the goal line to unleash a backhand that beat Kiprusoff inside the far post, glove side.
»» 2, VANCOUVER, Todd Bertuzzi 3 (Lee Goren, Sami Salo) 3:30
»» FLAMES 1, CANUCKS 1
With the Flames unable to clear the puck out of their own zone, Ed Jovanovski and Bertuzzi helped hold the puck in, and Jovanovski centered to Naslund streaking toward the net. Naslund popped the puck over Kiprusoff, who had sprawled to his glove side. The Canucks had a lead thanks to the goal late in the period.
»» 3, VANCOUVER, powerplay, Markus Naslund 9 (Ed Jovanovski) 18:24
»» CANUCKS 2, FLAMES 1
Vancouver again outshot the Flames 9-8 for the period and 18-16 overall. Vancouver chased in on their only power play chance of the period, and the Flames were unsuccessful on their only man-advantage of the period.

3rd period
After Richard Park lost possession of the puck in Vancouver's attacking zone, the play came back quickly the other way as Phaneuf fed to Roman Hamrlik, who quickly got through the teeth of the Canuck defense and blasted a slap shot from the high slot that beat Auld top shelf, glove side to tie the game.
»» 4, CALGARY, Roman Hamrlik 2 (Phaneuf) 5:44
»» FLAMES 2, CANUCKS 2
Jarome Iginla centered a puck from the right-wing corner that banked off of Nolan Baumgartner's skate and into the net. That's a bit unlucky.
»» 5, CALGARY, Jarome Iginla 8 (Tony Amonte, Reinprecht) 6:21
»» FLAMES 3, CANUCKS 2
Bertuzzi battled along the end boards and came out with the puck, centering to Naslund, who raced down the slot and put a backhand past Kiprusoff stick side to tie the game at 3-3. This was Naslund's 300th career goal.
»» 6, VANCOUVER, powerplay, Naslund 10 (Bertuzzi, Brendan Morrison) 11:26
»» FLAMES 3, CANUCKS 3
With four minutes left in regulation, Bryan Allen was sent to the box for interference. Only thirty seconds later, Trevor Linden was sent off for a crosscheck. Both penalties were vehemently argued against by the Vancouver bench. On the ensuing Calgary two-man advantage, Iginla dished to Phaneuf at the back of the right circle, and the former Red Deer Rebel blistered a one-timer over Auld's left shoulder.
»» 7, CALGARY, powerplay, Phaneuf 4 (Iginla, Reinprecht) 17:39
»» FLAMES 4, CANUCKS 3
The Canucks were badly outshot in the third period by a 12-3 margin, which is unsurprising considering the penalties that were issued. The Canucks cashed in on their lone power play chance of the period and the Flames were 1-for-4, making good on the only power play that mattered.

Three stars -- (1) Calgary's Dion Phaneuf, (2) Naslund, (3) Calgary's Roman Hamrlik

Naslund 2-0-2
Bertuzzi 1-1-2
Goren 0-1-1
Jovanovski 0-1-1
Morrison 0-1-1
Salo 0-1-1

Probably the number one positive out of this game for the Canucks is that Todd Bertuzzi showed some signs of life. He's had trouble getting back into the flow, and announcers and print journalists alike have opined about Bertuzzi's play so far, ranging from sluggish to fighting the puck to being on some planet other than the one on which the hockey game is being played. He and Markus Naslund at least teamed up for some first-line damage in this game that at least made it a game until everybody started making trips to the penalty box.

Vancouver won 31 of their 60 faceoffs (52%). Brendan Morrison was 10-for-21, Trevor Linden was 7-for-11, Ryan Kesler was 4-for-12, Todd Bertuzzi was 3-for-4, and Henrik Sedin was 7-for-11. Plus skaters (plus-one) included Sami Salo, Lee Goren, and Wade Brookbank. Minus skaters (minus-one) included Nolan Baumgartner, Bryan Allen, Morrison, Richard Park, Naslund, Kesler, Jarkko Ruutu, and Ed Jovanovski. All other skaters were even. Naslund led the team with five shots. Ohlund and Salo dished out five hits apiece. Bertuzzi delivered four hits.

The Canucks are now 10-4-2, good for 22 points in the standings.

DISCARD

Surely you have something to say about the Seahawks' 33-19 victory over the Arizona Cardinals?

I'd say something, but I'm all tied up studying and memorizing tons of crap.

I certainly hope y'all have something to say, because the national media won't be saying much -- they'll be too in love with the 6-2 Carolina Panthers and the 6-2 New York Giants to give a crap about your 6-2 Seattle Seahawks.

And yes, you may feel free to make captions on that second photo. It practically begs for it.
