What’s great is that, technically, you’re engaging in piracy no matter what format you watch it in because every copy of the movie was supposed to have been destroyed in 1926 at the behest of the Stoker estate.
I wrote essays about this movie and the birth of video piracy it spawned. It is the most batshit series of events. Florence Balcome recieved an anonymous letter that told her about the film. Then she sued because she was destitute and they never paid her for adapting the work she owned through the estate. At one point, there was an underground network of projectionists trading it (and other “banned” films) in secret before the first public US screening in 1929. There was a theater that caught on fire in the 1930s and destroyed hundreds of silent films, but somehow, the pirated copy of Nosferatu survived. There’s so much more and it almost makes me believe in divine intervention that the movie still exists. Go watch it on youtube, y'all.
