Definitions
- This invention relates to a washing apparatus for washing a vessel and/or a lid, and methods of washing the same.
- Washing apparatus such as dishwashers and the like, can be used to wash a wide variety of items, such as vessels and lids.
- Known dishwashers often come with a number of wash cycles, which are typically run for tens of minutes, or hour(s).
- Known dishwashers typically use a detergent capsule to clean the dishes.
- Rinsers such as those used in hospitality sectors, can be used to quickly rinse a drinks vessel, such as a drinks glass.
- Known rinsers are often messy to use, with the rinsing fluid being prone to splashing the user or surrounding environment.
- at least some known rinsers do not wash or clean the vessel. They are simply used to rinse the vessel. For example, rinsing might be carried out after the vessel has been washed by hand or by another appliance.
- Hand washing dishes in a sink is time consuming, laborious, and can be wasteful of materials, particularly if a small number of dishes is to be cleaned. Furthermore, hand washing dishes requires the use of detergent and/or hot fluid, such as water, particularly due to the typical environment used to carry this out (e.g. a domestic kitchen sink).
- detergent and/or hot fluid such as water

Description
Field of the invention
This invention relates to a washing apparatus for washing a vessel and/or a lid, and methods of washing the same.
Background to the invention
Washing apparatus, such as dishwashers and the like, can be used to wash a wide variety of items, such as vessels and lids. Known dishwashers often come with a number of wash cycles, which are typically run for tens of minutes, or hour(s). Known dishwashers typically use a detergent capsule to clean the dishes.
Rinsers, such as those used in hospitality sectors, can be used to quickly rinse a drinks vessel, such as a drinks glass. Known rinsers are often messy to use, with the rinsing fluid being prone to splashing the user or surrounding environment. Furthermore, at least some known rinsers do not wash or clean the vessel. They are simply used to rinse the vessel. For example, rinsing might be carried out after the vessel has been washed by hand or by another appliance.
Hand washing dishes in a sink is time consuming, laborious, and can be wasteful of materials, particularly if a small number of dishes is to be cleaned. Furthermore, hand washing dishes requires the use of detergent and/or hot fluid, such as water, particularly due to the typical environment used to carry this out (e.g. a domestic kitchen sink).
There has been a drive towards sustainable use of materials. For example, re-usable vessels, as opposed to disposable vessels, are gaining traction, particularly for hot beverages such as coffee and tea, and for cool beverages, such as water, soft drinks and the like. There should be a corresponding drive to wash such vessels (and lids) in a more resourceful and quick manner.
It would be desirable to provide a washing apparatus that could be used to clean a vessel, or a lid for the vessel, or both, which is efficient to use for a small number of dishes, such as for a single vessel/lid. It would be desirable to provide an apparatus that can wash a vessel and/or lid quickly, to ensure that users are more likely to continue to use the apparatus (and not resort to wasteful, slow, known methods of washing dishes).
It would be desirable to provide a washing apparatus that can clean an item quickly and that is easy to operate.
The present inventors have appreciated the drawbacks with known washing apparatus and methods of washing items such as vessels/lids.

The user input elements 36a are contactless buttons on a front region of the washing apparatus 1 . It will be understood that the buttons could be contacted by a user, but that the intended use is for contactless operation for improved hygiene.
In this embodiment, one user input element 36a controls the movement of the loading frame 18f between its first and second positions, and one user input element 36a initiates the washing of the vessel 2 and lid 4. Another
user input element 36a controls the operation of a further fluid outlet 38, which will be described further below.
The washing apparatus 1 is configured to run a wash cycle to wash the vessel 2 and lid 4. The washing apparatus 1 is configured to proceed with the wash cycle in response to a single user input command to start the wash cycle.
The wash cycle includes a number of steps, which will be outlined below. In other embodiments, the steps, as outlined below, could be carried out in a different order unless the context provides otherwise. Furthermore, the present embodiment uses the order of steps provided below, but the apparatus 1 could be reconfigured to carry out the steps in a different order. Moreover, the fluids, durations of steps, etc can be reconfigured as desired.
The control module is configured to control the operation of the washing apparatus 1 and to run at least some of the steps of the wash cycle.
When the vessel 2 and lid 4 are located at the vessel engagement portion 4 and the lid engagement portion 8, with the washing module 18 in the first, unloaded state 18d, the wash cycle includes a step of configuring the washing module 18 from the first, unloaded state 18d, to the second, loaded state 18e. In this embodiment, this step moves the loading frame 18f down into the chamber 20. This step is carried out by the user interacting with one of the user input elements 36a, but in other embodiments, this step could be carried out automatically by the control module.
Once the washing module 18 is in the second, loaded state 18e, the washing apparatus 1 can continue to run the wash cycle when the cover 34 is in the second, closed position. In this embodiment, the cover 34 is moved automatically by an actuator of the washing apparatus 1 , during the wash cycle but in other embodiments the cover 34 could be configured to be moved manually by the user.
The wash cycle includes a step of rotating the vessel engagement portion 6 about the axis of rotation 28, which rotates the vessel 2, for 15 seconds. At the same time as this step, the wash cycle includes a step of rotating the lid engagement portion 8 about the axes of rotation 30a, 30b, which rotates the lid 4, for 15 seconds. Thus, the wash cycle includes rotating both the vessel 2 and the lid 4 at the same time. This step is carried out when the washing module 18 is in the second, loaded state 18e.
The wash cycle includes two steps of washing the vessel 2 and the lid 4, which in this embodiment are carried out at the same time as the rotation of the vessel 2 and the lid 4. In this embodiment, the wash cycle is configured to provide heated atomised water to the vessel 2 for 5 seconds, and then heated water to the vessel 2 for 5 seconds. The wash cycle is also configured to provide the same two wash steps to the lid 4: heated atomised water for 5 seconds followed by heated water for 5 seconds. Washing of the vessel 2 and the lid 4 therefore take place substantially simultaneously. In this embodiment, the vessel 2 and lid 4 are rotated for 15 seconds, and during the first 10 seconds of that time, the two wash cycles are carried out. In this embodiment, each fluid outlet 16a’, 16a”, 16b, provides the same washing steps. In other embodiments, a single wash step for the vessel 2 and lid 4 of water may be sufficient, and as disclosed herein, other fluids and durations may be used.
In this embodiment, the water and atomised water are heated to between 70 degrees Celsius and 90 degrees Celsius.
In the final 5 seconds of the vessel 2 and lid 4 being rotated, the wash cycle includes a drying step for drying the vessel 2 and lid 4. The drying step includes providing pressurised air to the vessel 2 and the lid 4 for 5 seconds. The drying step therefore takes place at the same time as rotation of the vessel 2 and the lid 4.
The wash cycle is configured to carry out the drying step after the steps of washing the vessel 2 and lid 4.
The wash cycle is configured to return the vessel engagement portion 6 to the same final position each time, and to return the lid engagement portion 8 to the same final position each time.
Next, the wash cycle will automatically lift the cover 34, to the open position subsequent to the wash step(s) and drying steps having been carried out, and when the rotation of the vessel engagement portion 6 and lid engagement portion 8 has ended.
Once the cover 34 is in the open position, the wash cycle is configured to end by configuring the washing module 18 from the second, loaded state 18e, to the first, unloaded state 18d. In this embodiment, this is done automatically by the washing apparatus 1 .
The wash cycle is configured to have a total duration of 20 seconds.
