Description
The invention relates to a fabric softener active composition and a transparent fabric softener composition with improved properties as well as methods for their preparation.
Background art
Fabric softener compositions are normally opaque. Recent marked trends, however, show an increasing demand for fabric softener compositions having a transparent appearance.
WO2019048556A1 discloses a microemulsion technology to prepare transparent fabric softener active compositions and its use to prepare fabric softeners. Such microemulsions are difficult to prepare and its stability, especially at low temperature is not good enough. In addition, in the examples, the amounts of softening ingredient in the microemulsion in the examples of WO′556 is relatively high, i.e. exceeds around 10wt. %of the microemulsion. The fabric softeners further contain a large amount of oil and nonaqueous solvent. Furthermore, softeners obtained by dilution of the fabric softener active compositions of WO2019048556A1 are not fully transparent at low temperatures.
Summary of the invention
To at least partly solve the problems of prior art, the invention aims to provide a fabric softener active composition, which can be used to easily prepare a transparent fabric softener composition at room temperature with excellent stability at low temperature. Importantly, the transparent fabric softener composition can be further diluted but remains transparent.
The invention provides a fabric softener active composition, comprising, based on the total weight of the fabric softener active composition,
A) In sum 20 to 80 wt. %, preferably 30 to 80wt. %, more preferably 30 to 75 wt. %, even more preferred 35 to 70 wt. %and most preferred 45 to 60wt. %of at least one solubilizer, which is selected from the group consisting of mono long-chain-alkyl quaternary ammonium salts, mono long-chain-alkyl amido quaternary ammonium salts, alkoxylated mono long-chain-alkyl quaternary ammonium salts, alkoxylated mono long-chain-alkyl amido quaternary ammonium salts and mixtures thereof;
B) In sum 10 to 50wt. %, preferably 15 to 45 wt. %, more preferably 20 to 40 wt. %and most preferred 25 to 35wt. %of at least one softening ingredient, which is selected from the group consisting of di-long-chain-alkyl quaternary ammonium salts, di-long-chain-alkyl ester quaternary ammonium salts, ethoxylated di-long chain alkyl ester quaternary ammonium salts, di-long-chain-alkyl imidazoline quaternary ammonium salts, di-long-chain-alkyl amido quaternary ammonium salts, ethoxylated tri-long-chain-alkyl ester quaternary ammonium salts and ethoxylated di-long-chain-alkyl amido quaternary ammonium salts and mixtures thereof; and
C) In sum 0 to 50 wt. %, preferably 5 to 45 wt. %, more preferred 10 to 40 wt. %, even more preferred 15 to 35 wt. %, particular preferred 20 to 35 wt. %and most preferred 25 to 35 wt. %of nonaqueous solvent (s) .
The amounts of components A) , B) and C) are selected from the ranges given above such that the components in sum, plus optionally further comprised components, total to 100%of the softener active composition.
In the context of the present invention, the term “quaternary ammonium salts” respectively "quat" is understood to mean a chemical compound containing both a quaternary nitrogen atom and one or more long-chain-alkyl groups in the cationic portion of an ion pair. This is preferably understood to mean a class of surface-active quaternary ammonium compounds having the general formula R R’R”R”’ N
+ A
-, characterized in that at least one of the R to R”’ radicals is or comprises a long-chain-alkyl group. In the context of the present invention, the term “long-chain-alkyl group” is understood to mean an alkyl group having more than 4 carbon atoms, preferably 10 to 24, even more preferred 11 to 21 carbon atoms. Preferably, one, two or three of the R to R”’ radicals are a saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl radical which is optionally interrupted by oxygen or nitrogen atoms or carboxyl groups and optionally substituted.
In the context of the present invention, the term “long-chain-alkyl ester quaternary ammonium salts” is understood to mean a chemical compound containing both a quaternary nitrogen atom and an ester bond in the cationic portion of an ion pair. This is preferably understood to mean a class of surface-active quaternary ammonium compounds having the general formula RR’ R” R” ’ N
+ A
-, characterized in that at least one of the R to R”’ radicals is a long-chain-alkyl radical having more than 4 carbon atoms and is bonded to the charged group via ester bonds C (O) O-or OC (O) -. Preferably, one, two or three of the R to R”’ radicals are a saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl radical which is optionally interrupted by oxygen or nitrogen atoms or carboxyl groups and optionally substituted.
In the present invention, the fabric softener compatible anion A
-is a counterion to the positive charge on the quaternary nitrogen group, where doubly or triply negatively charged ions are also to be included here, preferably a halogen ion, especially chloride, sulfate, phosphate, methylsulfate, ethylsulfate, methanesulfonate, ethanesulfonate, tosylate, acetate, lactate or citrate, more preferably methylsulfate or a halogen ion such as Cl
-, most preferably methylsulfate anion.
Caused by the production process of (alkoxylated or not alkoxylated) quaternary alkyl ammonium salts or alkyl ester quaternary ammonium salts (also known as esterquats) these products typically result as mixtures of mono-, di-and trialkyl respectively mono-, di-and trialkyl ester quaternary ammonium salts with the respective numbers of long-chain-alkyl groups. In the present invention “on an average” in connection with “mono” means that the ammonium salt on an average comprises between 0.8 and 1.2, preferably 0.9 and 1.1, more preferred 0.95 and 1.05 and most preferred 0.98 and 1.02 long-chain-alkyl groups per molecule of the respective solubilizer. Accordingly “on an average” in connection with “di” means that the ammonium salt on an average comprises between 1.8 and 2.2, preferably 1.9 and 2.1, more preferred 1.95 and 2.05 and most preferred 1.98 and 2.02 long-chain-alkyl groups per molecule of the respective softening ingredient and “on an average” in connection with “tri” means that the ammonium salt on an average comprises between 2.8 and 3.2, preferably 2.9 and 3.1, more preferred 2.95 and 3.05 and most preferred 2.98 and 3.02 long-chain-alkyl groups per molecule of the respective softening ingredient . For example, an ester quaternary ammonium salt such as
WE 45 has an average number of fatty acid ester groups of two, it is described as a diesterquat.
In the present invention “mono long-chain-alkyl” is preferably to be understood as “on an average mono long-chain-alkyl” , “di long-chain-alkyl” is preferably to be understood as “on an average die long-chain-alkyl” and “tri long-chain-alkyl” is preferably to be understood as “on an average tri long-chain-alkyl” .
The fabric softener active composition may be used to prepare a transparent fabric softener composition. The transparent softener composition may simply be prepared by diluting the fabric softener active composition with water.

All wt. %percentages relate to the total weight of the fabric softener active composition. In connection with the present invention, the term “ester oil or mineral oil” is understood to mean water-immiscible liquids suitable for production of fabric softener compositions. In connection with the present invention, “water-immiscible” means that, at room temperature, aqueous mixtures of the oils at oil concentrations of 0.5%to 99.5%by volume, based on the overall mixture, lead to cloudiness already perceptible to the human eye or to the formation of two or more phases. In addition, in connection with the present invention, ester oils or mineral oils are preferably characterized in that they have an interfacial tension of > 5 mN/m with respect to water. Ester oils or mineral oils may be based, for example, on oleochemistry or silicone chemistry.
