CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application claims the benefit of Indian Provisional Patent Application No. 202111059395 filed December 20, 2021, which is incorporated herein by reference for all purposes in its entirety.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a composition comprising free molecular Iodine (I2) and alcohol which act as germicide, disinfectant, and sanitizing agent to kill a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and to some extent viruses, and also a process for its preparation. The composition further comprises glycerol and inert excipients. The composition can be utilized as a lavatory surface sanitizing agent/disinfecting agent or in products for instantaneous surface sanitization and disinfection.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Current technology involves an aerosolized composition of a toilet seat sanitizer containing benzalkonium chloride, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), fragrance, solvents and propellant that protects from germs in public toilets and reduces the risk of contracting infections such as Urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Benzalkonium chloride used in the current technology has been known to have allergenic properties and is a well-known skin irritant. Isopropyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin and continuous exposure can cause redness, itching, drying, rash and cracking.
As such there is no product available in the market which provides instantaneous sanitization and disinfection upon application, is hypoallergenic upon accidental
exposure, is non-irritant upon topical contact, is non-corrosive to the applied surface as well as does not leave any residue post application, together in a single product.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In one aspect, the present invention provides a composition which comprises molecular iodine (I2), a lower alcohol, and glycerol, wherein the composition is stable, wherein the composition delivers free molecular iodine ranging between 200 ppm and 300 ppm, and wherein the composition is formulated for application as a lavatory surface sanitizing agent and disinfectant.

EXAMPLE
The base solution/concentrate of Iodine used in the below example was obtained as a stock solution with Iodine maintained at 1 mg/ml (w/v) concentration. (For a formulation to be prepared, the required amount of iodine was measured and added according to the final concentration required in the formulation being prepared).
A 100 ml formulation was prepared using the following ingredients (for example, to be used as a lavatory surface sanitizer and disinfection solution) with molecular iodine concentration maintained at about 250 ppm.
Iodine (0.25 ml) from the stock solution was added to ethanol (97.25 ml) to obtain a solution. To this solution, glycerol (2 ml) was added and mixed. Fragrance (tempting) (0.5 ml) was added to obtain the final product.
Three samples of the formulation were taken and observed for 0 day and 7 days to check for stability with Iodine, spray ability and colour change (if any).
The final solution was of the required viscosity which was in a sprayable form. The formulation was observed to be stable with respect to its colour, and stability at all the time intervals as mentioned above.
