Definitions
- This application relates to the art of apparel and, more particularly, to a modular sleeve system.
- a sleeveless article When donning apparel, such as body armor, a uniform, or sporting gear, it is common for a sleeveless article to be worn, such as for example a bulletproof vest, a plate carrier, a safety vest, a fishing wader or vest, a poncho, or the like. While such a vest may at least partially cover the user’s torso, it leaves the arms fully exposed, not only to the elements, but also to potential damage or injury in some circumstances of use. In some situations, added arm covering is desired, but in others, it is not necessary. Yet, such optional arm coverings are not known to be available for current arrangements of vests.
- Optional arm coverings could also be desired in other situations besides when wearing a vest.
- a user of a backpack may desire to protect their arms in a similar manner as when wearing a vest, such as when hiking on a hot day to keep off the sunburn, mosquitos or other pests, and abrasions, without having to put on a jacket.
- Any such arm covering could also provide for additional storage options in addition to those afforded by the pack, and additionally could provide easier access to such stored items.
- a modular sleeve system includes a sleeve including a panel, a connector, and a strap.
- the panel forms a hollow body having a first end and an opposite second end, the hollow body defines a first opening at the first end and a second opening at the second end, the first opening has a shoulder portion and an underarm portion.
- the connector is coupled to the panel.
- the strap is coupled to the panel and adapted to be received by the connector.
- a modular sleeve system in another embodiment, includes a first sleeve and a second sleeve spaced apart from the first sleeve.
- Each of the first sleeve and the second sleeve includes a panel and a strap.
- the panel forms a hollow body having a first end and an opposite second end, the hollow body defines a first opening at the first end and a second opening at the second end, the first opening has a shoulder portion and an underarm portion positioned closer to the second opening than the shoulder portion.
- the strap is coupled to the panel.
- At least one of the first sleeve and the second sleeve includes a connector coupled to the respective panel and adapted to receive the strap of either the first sleeve or the second sleeve.
- a modular sleeve system includes an item of apparel including a shoulder portion that extends between a shoulder and a neck of a wearer, the shoulder portion having a thickness, and a sleeve including a panel, a connector, and a strap.
- the connector is spaced apart a distance from a position that the strap is coupled to the panel, the distance being greater than the thickness of the shoulder portion to allow the strap of the sleeve to extend around the shoulder portion and couple to the connector.

- the second sleeve 14 may be spaced apart from and selectively attachable to the first sleeve 12, as will be described in further detail below.
- the sleeves 12, 14 may each extend from a first end 12a, 14a for at least partially covering the user’s corresponding upper arm and shoulder, to a second end 12b, 14b associated with the user’s forearm and wrist.
- the sleeves 12, 14 may each include a panel 13, a strap 20a, 20b, and a connector 22a, 22b.
- the panel 13 may be coupled along a seam 15 to define a hollow body 17 having the first end 12a, 14a and the second end 12b, 14b opposite the first end 12a, 14a.
- the hollow body 17 may define a first opening 19 at the first end 12a, 14a and a second opening 21 at the second end 12b, 14b.
- the first opening 19 may be positioned obliquely to a length of the seam 15 such that the first opening 19 includes a shoulder portion 19a and an underarm portion 19b that is positioned closer to the second opening 21 than the shoulder portion 19a.
- Each second end 12b, 14b and the corresponding second opening 21 may be smaller, or narrower, than the first end 12a, 14a and the corresponding first opening 19 such that each sleeve 12, 14 is tapered down from the first end 12a, 14a and first opening 19 to the second end 12b, 14b and second opening 21.
- the first end 12a, 14a may be provided with the ability to adjust the size of the first opening 19, such as by providing a cinch 16, and the opposite, second end 12b, 14b may be provided with a similar ability, such as by providing an adjustable strap 18 at the second end 12b, 14b that is adapted to adjust a size of the second opening 21.
- the panel 13 may further include an extension 12c, 14c that extends from the shoulder portion 19a of the first opening 19 at the first end 12a away from the hollow body 17 of the panel 13 to overlay a wearer’s shoulders.
- the extensions 12c, 14c may be tapered and allow for a degree of flexibility in terms of the length of the user’s arms and the respective coverage afforded, and may also include a loop 12d for connecting with a connector 22a as shown in the enlargement associated with Figure 1.
- the sleeves 12, 14 may be adapted to interconnect with each other. This may be achieved by providing each sleeve 12, 14 with a connector assembly 23 in the form of the elongated strap 20a, 20b and the associated connector, or buckle, 22a, 22b connected to the extension 12c, 14c at the wider end 12a, 12b overlying the user’s shoulders. While the depicted connector 22a, 22b is a tri-glide buckle, it is contemplated and possible that the connector 22a, 22b may be any connector for attaching to the strap 20a, 20b, such as, for example, buttons, buckles, or the like.
- the connector 22a, 22b may be coupled at a first end 25a of the extension 12c, 14c opposite a second end 25b attached to the panel 13.
- the strap 20a, 20b may be coupled to the hollow body 17 of the panel 13 adjacent the extension 12c, 14c and extend toward the connector 22a, 22b to be adapted to be received by the connector 22a, 22b. While the sleeves 12, 14 are each depicted including a connector 22a, 22b, it is contemplated and possible that only one of the sleeve 12, 14 include a connector 22a or 22b that is adapted to receive one or both of the straps 20a, 20b.
- the panel 13 may include a passage 27 coupled to the extension 12c, 14c for at least partially receiving the strap 20a, 20b so that the strap 20a, 20b may be fed through the passage 27 before coupling to the connector 22a, 22b.
- the extension 12c, 14c may additionally or alternatively include a high friction surface 29 to prevent the strap 20a, 20b from moving relative to the connector 22a, 22b and/or the extension 12c, 14c when the strap 20a, 20b contacts the extension 12c, 14c.
- the high friction surface 29 may include a higher coefficient of friction than a coefficient of friction of the hollow body 17 of the panel 13.
- the strap 20a of a first sleeve 12 may be threaded through the connectors 22a, 22b, and vice-versa, in order to connect the sleeves 12, 14 across a user’s torso (back in the illustrated embodiment, but a front connection is also possible, as noted below).
- the length of the straps 20a, 20b may be provided so as to allow for a wide range of adjustability to accommodate different sizes of users, depending on the width of their torso or the length of their arms.
- a first pocket 26 may be coupled to the panel 13 positioned on a forearm portion 31 of the panel 13 adjacent to a user’s elbow.
- a protective insert 30 may be positioned inside the first pocket 26.
- the protective insert 30 may be a protective material, such as a cushion made of a compressible material (e.g., foam), a rigid insert to protect against acute impact forces (e.g., steel, aluminum, or other metal), or the like.
- the first pocket 26 may include a closure 28, such as a hook-and-loop type of fastener, a zipper, or the like.
- a second pocket 24 may be formed in the panel 13 and positioned on an upper arm portion 33 of the panel 13.
- the second pocket 24 may include a closure, such as those described above in reference to the first pocket 26.
- Additional external hook-and-loop fastener panels 32 may also be provided, such as for receiving removable badges or emblems (which could also be permanently attached to the sleeves 12, 14).
- the hook-and-loop fastener panels 32 may be positioned over the second pocket 24.
- the forearm portion 31 of the panel 13 covers a forearm of the wearer, and the upper arm portion 33 covers an upper arm of the wearer.
- the sleeves 12, 14 to an item of sleeveless apparel, such as vest V (which could include a fishing wader, life preserver, construction vest, safety vest, or the like).
- the apparel may include a shoulder portion P that has a thickness and that extends between shoulders and a neck of the wearer.
- the extension 14c may extend a length away from the hollow body 17 of the panel 13 that is greater than the thickness of the shoulder portion P so that the extension 12c, 14c may be adapted to extend under the shoulder portion P of the item of apparel to allow the strap 20a, 20b of the sleeve 12, 14 to extend around the shoulder portion P of the item of apparel and couple to the connector 22a, 22b on the extension 12c, 14c.
- the extension 12c 14c may extend a distance such that the connector 22a, 22b is spaced apart a distance from a position that the strap 20a, 20b is coupled to the panel 13, the distance being greater than the thickness of the shoulder portion P to allow the strap 20a, 20b to extend around the shoulder portion P and couple to the connector 22a, 22b.
- the extension 12c, 14c may be passed under a strap or shoulder portion P of the vest V and connected to the strap 20b via the connector 22b.
- the extension 12c, 14c may be adapted to extend under the shoulder portion P to allow the strap 20a, 20b of the sleeve 12, 14 to extend over the shoulder portion P and couple to the connector 22a, 22b on the extension 12c, 14c.
- the passage of the strap 20a through the connector 22a thus forms a loop around the shoulder portion P of the vest V. This serves to removably attach and secure the sleeves 12, 14 to the vest V, and thus provide optional covering for one or both of the user’s arms, as desired.
- the sleeves 12, 14 may be provided (e.g., sold or distributed) as part of the vest V, and then selectively removed if desired by the user.
- FIG. 3 depicts a vest
- the apparel may be any apparel having straps or shoulder portions that permit the extension 12c, 14c to extend under the apparel and connect to the straps of the sleeves. Additional embodiments of the apparel will be described in further detail below, particularly, with reference to FIGS. 4-5, 9, and 11-12.
- Figure 4 illustrates a similar approach, but one in which the shoulder portion P is narrower in width.

- the strap 20b of sleeve 14 may be wrapped around the backpack shoulder strap S and secured in place as previously described (including in connection with the passage 34 or passage 27).
- a similar arrangement may be used in connection with sleeve 12.
- the provision of one or more pockets 24, 26 in the sleeve(s) 12 or 14 also expands the storage capability afforded by the backpack B.
- the extension 14c may also be provided with the high friction surface 29, such as by providing a plurality of elastomeric (rubber) protrusions 38. These protrusions 38 may contact the underside surface of the shoulder portion P and thus help to prevent the sleeve 14 (or 12) once connected from moving about when donned by the user.
- elastomeric (rubber) protrusions 38 may contact the underside surface of the shoulder portion P and thus help to prevent the sleeve 14 (or 12) once connected from moving about when donned by the user.
- FIG. 6 further illustrates the inclusion of an optional chest strap, such as a second strap 40 in the sleeve system 10 for assisting in securing the sleeves 12, 14 to the user.
- the second strap 40 may comprise adjustable portions 40a, 40b, each having a connector 40c (e.g., mating male portion and female receptacle) configured to selectively couple to the connector 40c of the other sleeve, thereby forming a connection across the user’s chest.
- a similar arrangement could be used in lieu of the straps 20a, 20b and connectors 22a, 22b.
- the second strap 40 may be spaced apart from the straps 20a, 20b on the extensions 12c, 14c of the sleeves 12, 14, and extend from the first opening 19.
- Each sleeve 12, 14 may include a slit 35 formed in the panel 13 at the first end 12a adjacent the first opening 19 that is adapted to receive the second strap 40.
- the respective connector 40c may be coupled to the second strap 40 and configured to receive an end of the second strap 40 that is fed through the slit 35 to couple the second strap 40 to the panel 13.
- first and second lengths 16a, 16b of an elastic material may be secured within a pocket 42 formed along an underside portion at the wider end 14a of the sleeve 14 (and a similar arrangement may be provided for sleeve 12), that extends partially along the first opening 19 to be spaced apart from the extension 14c.
- the cinch 16 may be adapted to adjust a size of the first opening 19.
- a releasable connector 44 may connect the lengths 16a, 16b and allow for shortening to reduce the opening of the wider end 14a of the sleeve, and thereby connect it to the upper arm and shoulder region of the user.
- Figure 8 illustrates that the sleeves 12, 14 may each be provided with a liner 46, such as a first liner 46a adapted to be positioned within the first sleeve 12, and a second liner 46b adapted to be positioned within the second sleeve 14.

MODULAR SLEEVE SYSTEMS
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED PPLICATION
[0001] The present disclosure claims the benefit of Provisional Patent Application No. 63/243,362, filed on September 13, 2021 and entitled “MODULAR SLEEVE SYSTEM AND RELATED METHODS,” and Provisional Patent Application No. 63/299,223, filed on January 13, 2022 and entitled “MODULAR SLEEVE SYSTEM AND RELATED METHODS.” The contents of each application are incorporated by reference in their entireties.
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] This application relates to the art of apparel and, more particularly, to a modular sleeve system.
BACKGROUND
[0003] When donning apparel, such as body armor, a uniform, or sporting gear, it is common for a sleeveless article to be worn, such as for example a bulletproof vest, a plate carrier, a safety vest, a fishing wader or vest, a poncho, or the like.
[0004] Optional arm coverings could also be desired in other situations besides when wearing a vest. For example, a user of a backpack may desire to protect their arms in a similar manner as when wearing a vest, such as when hiking on a hot day to keep off the sunburn, mosquitos or other pests, and abrasions, without having to put on a jacket. Any such arm covering could also provide for additional storage options in addition to those afforded by the pack, and additionally could provide easier access to such stored items.
[0005] Accordingly, a need is identified for an item of apparel that overcomes the foregoing concerns and possibly others that have yet to be discovered.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0023] In the following detailed description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings that form a part hereof, and in which is shown by way of illustration, specific embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. These embodiments are described in sufficient detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice the embodiments and like numerals represent like details in the various figures. Also, it is to be understood that other embodiments may be utilized, and that process or other changes may be made without departing from the scope of the disclosure. The following detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the invention is defined only by the appended claims and their equivalents. In accordance with the disclosure, an automated drilling system is hereinafter described.
[0024] Reference is now made to Figure 1, a modular sleeve system 10 is shown. In the illustrated embodiment, the sleeve system 10 comprises two sleeves, such as a first sleeve 12 and
a second sleeve 14, which may be adapted for being worn on the respective arms of the user. The second sleeve 14 may be spaced apart from and selectively attachable to the first sleeve 12, as will be described in further detail below. Thus, as shown, the sleeves 12, 14 may each extend from a first end 12a, 14a for at least partially covering the user’s corresponding upper arm and shoulder, to a second end 12b, 14b associated with the user’s forearm and wrist. The sleeves 12, 14 may each include a panel 13, a strap 20a, 20b, and a connector 22a, 22b. The panel 13 may be coupled along a seam 15 to define a hollow body 17 having the first end 12a, 14a and the second end 12b, 14b opposite the first end 12a, 14a. The hollow body 17 may define a first opening 19 at the first end 12a, 14a and a second opening 21 at the second end 12b, 14b. The first opening 19 may be positioned obliquely to a length of the seam 15 such that the first opening 19 includes a shoulder portion 19a and an underarm portion 19b that is positioned closer to the second opening 21 than the shoulder portion 19a.
[0025] Each second end 12b, 14b and the corresponding second opening 21 may be smaller, or narrower, than the first end 12a, 14a and the corresponding first opening 19 such that each sleeve 12, 14 is tapered down from the first end 12a, 14a and first opening 19 to the second end 12b, 14b and second opening 21. As will be described further below, the first end 12a, 14a may be provided with the ability to adjust the size of the first opening 19, such as by providing a cinch 16, and the opposite, second end 12b, 14b may be provided with a similar ability, such as by providing an adjustable strap 18 at the second end 12b, 14b that is adapted to adjust a size of the second opening 21.
[0026] The panel 13 may further include an extension 12c, 14c that extends from the shoulder portion 19a of the first opening 19 at the first end 12a away from the hollow body 17 of the panel 13 to overlay a wearer’s shoulders. The extensions 12c, 14c may be tapered and allow for a degree of flexibility in terms of the length of the user’s arms and the respective coverage afforded, and may also include a loop 12d for connecting with a connector 22a as shown in the enlargement associated with Figure 1.
[0027] The sleeves 12, 14 may be adapted to interconnect with each other. This may be achieved by providing each sleeve 12, 14 with a connector assembly 23 in the form of the elongated strap 20a, 20b and the associated connector, or buckle, 22a, 22b connected to the extension 12c,
14c at the wider end 12a, 12b overlying the user’s shoulders. While the depicted connector 22a, 22b is a tri-glide buckle, it is contemplated and possible that the connector 22a, 22b may be any connector for attaching to the strap 20a, 20b, such as, for example, buttons, buckles, or the like. The connector 22a, 22b may be coupled at a first end 25a of the extension 12c, 14c opposite a second end 25b attached to the panel 13. The strap 20a, 20b may be coupled to the hollow body 17 of the panel 13 adjacent the extension 12c, 14c and extend toward the connector 22a, 22b to be adapted to be received by the connector 22a, 22b. While the sleeves 12, 14 are each depicted including a connector 22a, 22b, it is contemplated and possible that only one of the sleeve 12, 14 include a connector 22a or 22b that is adapted to receive one or both of the straps 20a, 20b.
[0028] The panel 13 may include a passage 27 coupled to the extension 12c, 14c for at least partially receiving the strap 20a, 20b so that the strap 20a, 20b may be fed through the passage 27 before coupling to the connector 22a, 22b. The extension 12c, 14c may additionally or alternatively include a high friction surface 29 to prevent the strap 20a, 20b from moving relative to the connector 22a, 22b and/or the extension 12c, 14c when the strap 20a, 20b contacts the extension 12c, 14c. The high friction surface 29 may include a higher coefficient of friction than a coefficient of friction of the hollow body 17 of the panel 13.
[0029] Thus, as perhaps best understood by comparing Figures 1 and 2, in one possible use of the modular sleeve system 10, the strap 20a of a first sleeve 12 may be threaded through the connectors 22a, 22b, and vice-versa, in order to connect the sleeves 12, 14 across a user’s torso (back in the illustrated embodiment, but a front connection is also possible, as noted below). The length of the straps 20a, 20b may be provided so as to allow for a wide range of adjustability to accommodate different sizes of users, depending on the width of their torso or the length of their arms.
[0030] As also shown in Figure 1, one or both sleeves 12, 14 may be provided with a one or more pockets. For example, a first pocket 26 may be coupled to the panel 13 positioned on a forearm portion 31 of the panel 13 adjacent to a user’s elbow. A protective insert 30 may be positioned inside the first pocket 26. The protective insert 30 may be a protective material, such as a cushion made of a compressible material (e.g., foam), a rigid insert to protect against acute impact
forces (e.g., steel, aluminum, or other metal), or the like. The first pocket 26 may include a closure 28, such as a hook-and-loop type of fastener, a zipper, or the like.
[0031] A second pocket 24 may be formed in the panel 13 and positioned on an upper arm portion 33 of the panel 13. The second pocket 24 may include a closure, such as those described above in reference to the first pocket 26. Additional external hook-and-loop fastener panels 32 may also be provided, such as for receiving removable badges or emblems (which could also be permanently attached to the sleeves 12, 14). The hook-and-loop fastener panels 32 may be positioned over the second pocket 24. The forearm portion 31 of the panel 13 covers a forearm of the wearer, and the upper arm portion 33 covers an upper arm of the wearer.
[0032] As can be understood from Figure 3, it is also possible using this arrangement to connect one or both of the sleeves 12, 14 to an item of sleeveless apparel, such as vest V (which could include a fishing wader, life preserver, construction vest, safety vest, or the like). The apparel may include a shoulder portion P that has a thickness and that extends between shoulders and a neck of the wearer. The extension 14c may extend a length away from the hollow body 17 of the panel 13 that is greater than the thickness of the shoulder portion P so that the extension 12c, 14c may be adapted to extend under the shoulder portion P of the item of apparel to allow the strap 20a, 20b of the sleeve 12, 14 to extend around the shoulder portion P of the item of apparel and couple to the connector 22a, 22b on the extension 12c, 14c. The extension 12c 14c, may extend a distance such that the connector 22a, 22b is spaced apart a distance from a position that the strap 20a, 20b is coupled to the panel 13, the distance being greater than the thickness of the shoulder portion P to allow the strap 20a, 20b to extend around the shoulder portion P and couple to the connector 22a, 22b. The extension 12c, 14c may be passed under a strap or shoulder portion P of the vest V and connected to the strap 20b via the connector 22b. Particularly, the extension 12c, 14c may be adapted to extend under the shoulder portion P to allow the strap 20a, 20b of the sleeve 12, 14 to extend over the shoulder portion P and couple to the connector 22a, 22b on the extension 12c, 14c. Thus, as can be understood from connected sleeve 12, the passage of the strap 20a through the connector 22a thus forms a loop around the shoulder portion P of the vest V. This serves to removably attach and secure the sleeves 12, 14 to the vest V, and thus provide optional covering for one or both of the user’s arms, as desired. Indeed, it is possible for the sleeves 12, 14 to be provided (e.g., sold or distributed) as part of the vest V, and then selectively removed if
desired by the user. While FIG. 3 depicts a vest, the apparel may be any apparel having straps or shoulder portions that permit the extension 12c, 14c to extend under the apparel and connect to the straps of the sleeves. Additional embodiments of the apparel will be described in further detail below, particularly, with reference to FIGS. 4-5, 9, and 11-12.
[0033] Figure 4 illustrates a similar approach, but one in which the shoulder portion P is narrower in width. The strap 20b can still be attached to (e.g., looped around) and connected to the connector 22b of sleeve 14, as shown in completed form on sleeve 12. A passage 34 may be provided for receiving and retaining the free end of the strap 20a. Alternatively or additionally, the passage 27 may be a loop to provide a hold-down for the strap 20b.
[0034] Figure 5 illustrates that a similar arrangement may be used in connection with a backpack B. Specifically, the shoulder portion P may be a backpack shoulder strap S, and the strap 20b of sleeve 14 may be wrapped around the backpack shoulder strap S and secured in place as previously described (including in connection with the passage 34 or passage 27). A similar arrangement may be used in connection with sleeve 12. As can be appreciated, the provision of one or more pockets 24, 26 in the sleeve(s) 12 or 14 also expands the storage capability afforded by the backpack B.
[0035] In any of the above situations, the extension 14c may also be provided with the high friction surface 29, such as by providing a plurality of elastomeric (rubber) protrusions 38. These protrusions 38 may contact the underside surface of the shoulder portion P and thus help to prevent the sleeve 14 (or 12) once connected from moving about when donned by the user.
[0036] Figure 6 further illustrates the inclusion of an optional chest strap, such as a second strap 40 in the sleeve system 10 for assisting in securing the sleeves 12, 14 to the user. The second strap 40 may comprise adjustable portions 40a, 40b, each having a connector 40c (e.g., mating male portion and female receptacle) configured to selectively couple to the connector 40c of the other sleeve, thereby forming a connection across the user’s chest. A similar arrangement could be used in lieu of the straps 20a, 20b and connectors 22a, 22b. The second strap 40 may be spaced apart from the straps 20a, 20b on the extensions 12c, 14c of the sleeves 12, 14, and extend from the first opening 19. Each sleeve 12, 14 may include a slit 35 formed in the panel 13 at the first end 12a adjacent the first opening 19 that is adapted to receive the second strap 40. The respective
connector 40c may be coupled to the second strap 40 and configured to receive an end of the second strap 40 that is fed through the slit 35 to couple the second strap 40 to the panel 13.
[0037] The detail of Figure 7 shows how the cinch 16 may optionally be provided at the upper, wider end of the sleeves 12, 14, such as at the first end 12a of the hollow body 17. Specifically, first and second lengths 16a, 16b of an elastic material may be secured within a pocket 42 formed along an underside portion at the wider end 14a of the sleeve 14 (and a similar arrangement may be provided for sleeve 12), that extends partially along the first opening 19 to be spaced apart from the extension 14c. The cinch 16 may be adapted to adjust a size of the first opening 19. For example, a releasable connector 44 may connect the lengths 16a, 16b and allow for shortening to reduce the opening of the wider end 14a of the sleeve, and thereby connect it to the upper arm and shoulder region of the user.
[0038] Figure 8 illustrates that the sleeves 12, 14 may each be provided with a liner 46, such as a first liner 46a adapted to be positioned within the first sleeve 12, and a second liner 46b adapted to be positioned within the second sleeve 14. The liners 46 may comprise an insulative material adapted to keep the user warm, such as for example wool or fleece. The insulative material may include a thermal resistance value that is greater than a thermal resistance value of the panel 13 of each sleeve 12, 14. The liners 46 may include a plurality of liner fasteners 48 (e.g., buttons or snaps) for mating with corresponding fasteners 50 of the sleeves 12, 14. Each sleeve 12, 14 may include a plurality of sleeve fasteners 50 (the corresponding fasteners 50) that include two fasteners 50a coupled to the extension 12c, 14c and another fastener 50b coupled to the panel 13 adjacent the underarm portion 19b of the first opening 19. The plurality of liner fasteners 48 may be positioned on the liners 46 to be attachable to the plurality of sleeve fasteners 50.
[0039] Another example of use is shown in Figure 9 where the selective attachment of the sleeves 12, 14 to waders 52 is shown. Specifically, the shoulder portion P of the waders 52 may be wader straps, and one or both of the sleeves 12, 14 may be connected to the wader straps of the waders 52. This may provide protection against the elements, such as sunlight S, or pests or bugs B, while donning the waders 52.
[0040] The sleeves 12, 14 may be fabricated from a durable, resilient, and flexible material, such as for example cotton (including as a rip stop material), twill, nylon (e.g. CORDURA), or
other polymeric materials. The flexible nature of the material allows for the sleeves 12, 14 to be rolled up for compact storage, such as in a pocket 54 of the vest V, as shown in Figure 10 (note unfurled sleeve 14, partially rolled sleeve 14’, and fully rolled sleeve 14” for insertion in the pocket 54 of vest V). Surface patterns, such as coloring or camouflage, may also be provided as desired for a particular application. For example, a bright coloring, such as orange, may be provided to increase visibility when worn during hunting or at a construction site (note bands 56 in Figure 11, which may be reflective material, and may be provided on both sleeves 12, 14, as well as possibly on the associated vest V). For example, the sleeves 12, 14 may include a plurality of reflectors, such as the note bands 56 formed of a high visibility material, positioned on the forearm portion 31, the upper arm portion 33, or other components, such as the adjustable strap 18, of the sleeves 12, 14. High visibility materials can include, for example, a neon color, a reflective tape having high luminescence, or the like.
[0041] Yet another example is provided in Figure 12. In the depicted embodiment, the apparel is a poncho 60 that includes connectors, such as straps 62, associated with each shoulder portion. The straps 62 may be provided along an interior of the poncho 60, and thus adapted to receive and connect with the sleeves 12, 14, such as strap 20b and an associated connector 22b (but buttons or other types of connectors could be used as noted previously). The straps 62 may extend transversely to the straps 20b of the sleeves 12, 14 to define a first slit 62a and a second slit 62b in the shoulder portion of the poncho 60 that permit the extension 12c, 14c and the strap 20a, 20b to be adapted to be positionable through each of the first slit 62a and the second slit 62b to selectively couple the sleeve 12, 14 to the poncho 60. For example, the strap 20b of the sleeve 12, 14 may extend through the slits 62a, 62b and be wrapped around the strap 62 of the poncho 60, as indicated on the right hand side of Figure 12 by action arrow W. The resulting poncho 60 thus may selectively include full arm protection, and may include a pocket 64 for storing the sleeves 12, 14 when not in use.
