Abstract

Described herein is a smoothie powder composition comprising from about 20 wt% to about 50 wt% of a protein powder, from about 30 wt% to about 60 wt% total of one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders, and psyllium husk. The smoothie powder composition can be mixed with water to provide a convenient, on-the-go smoothie beverage.

FIELD
[0002] The present disclosure relates generally to smoothie powder compositions.
BACKGROUND
[0003] Professional and everyday fitness consumers use protein powders to make their protein shakes or smoothies using their blender. However, consumers find it difficult to spare time to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, cut and measure the ingredients, and clean the blender afterwards on regular basis. Therefore, there is a need for a smoothie powder composition with protein and fruit and/or vegetable powders that can provide the nutritional benefits of protein shakes with good taste and that can be conveniently prepared and consumed on-the- go.
SUMMARY
[0004] One aspect of the disclosure is a smoothie powder composition comprising: from about 20 wt% to about 50 wt% of a protein powder, from about 30 wt% to about 60 wt% total of one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders, and psyllium husk.
[0005] Another aspect of the disclosure is a smoothie beverage comprising water and a smoothie powder composition described herein.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0006] Disclosed herein are smoothie powder compositions. Certain combinations of a protein powder, fruit and/or vegetable powders, and optionally other ingredients, as disclosed herein, provide smoothie powders that, when mixed with water to make a smoothie beverage, provide desirable taste. In some embodiments, the compositions disclosed herein provide a desirable taste, including good sweet and sour balance, such that no added sugars and/or acids are needed in the composition to produce a desirable taste. Moreover, in some embodiments, the compositions disclosed herein result in a stabilized buffer system without needing any buffering agent. Also, in some embodiments, the compositions disclosed herein, when mixed with water, achieve a thick and pulpy texture that is desirable for a smoothie beverage.
[0007] As used herein, a composition with "no added sugars" refers to a composition where no sugars are added to the composition except for the sugars already present in the fruit powder, vegetable powder, and/or protein powder, or present in other ingredients that are not a significant source of sugar.

Claims

CLAIMS What is claimed is:
1. A smoothie powder composition comprising:
from about 20 wt% to about 50 wt% of a protein powder;
from about 30 wt% to about 60 wt% total of one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders; and
psyllium husk.
2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the psyllium husk is present in an amount of from about 1 wt% to about 5 wt%.
3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the protein powder is present in an amount from about 30 wt% to about 40 wt%.
4. The composition of claim 3, wherein the one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders are present in an amount of from about 40 wt% to about 50 wt%.
5. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a flavoring agent.
6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the flavoring agent is selected from the group consisting of a natural fruit flavor, a natural protein-shielding flavor, a spice, and a natural spice flavor.
7. The composition of claim 1, further comprising tri-calcium phosphate.
8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises no added sugars.
9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises no added acids.
10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises no buffering agent.
1 1. The composition of claim 1, wherein the one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders comprises one or more freeze dried powders.
12. The composition of claim 1, wherein the one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders comprises raspberry powder, strawberry powder, banana powder, blueberry powder, cranberry powder and beet powder.
13. The composition of claim 1, wherein the one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders comprises pineapple powder, banana powder, passion fruit powder, and peach powder.
14. The composition of claim 1, wherein the one or more fruit and/or vegetable powders comprises spinach powder, kale powder, pineapple powder, mango powder, kiwi powder, banana powder, apple powder, and matcha powder.
15. The composition of claim 1, further comprising mushroom powder.
16. The composition of claim 1, wherein the protein powder comprises whey protein.
17. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an ingredient selected from hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seed, or any combination thereof.
18. The composition of claim 17, wherein the ingredient selected from hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seed, or any combination thereof is present in an amount of from about 8 wt% to about 20 wt%.
19. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising natural milk salts.
20. A smoothie beverage comprising a smoothie powder composition of claim 1 and water.
