Abstract
Drilling fluids is one of the most important barriers/factors in daily drilling operation in the oil field, and monitoring drilling fluids parameters while drilling is extremely important because any variation in the drilling fluids parameters indicates a reason for it, which may be: 1. Influx (Water or Oil or Gas). 2. Contamination. 3. Chemicals degradation. 4. Evaporation... etc. And lacking in monitoring/testing mud parameters may lead to catastrophic incidents. Normal known testing equipment: Individual testing equipment which includes physical testing and chemical titrations, every test is done separately using same sample of mud which requires more time for: 1. Rigging up the testing equipment. 2. Calibration. 3. Testing time. 4. Cleaning at the end of each test. The automated mud testing kit (AMTK) will be applied in the oil field and specifically on drilling rigs and all drilling fluids laboratories, also it can be used in any other field that require fluid testing. This innovation (AMTK) will be used in testing all types of drilling fluids (Mud) on all types of rigs and the test results will be generated on the kit screen and will be able to print or transfer to USB flash drive. (AMTK) will give the drilling engineer more confident in their mud and the treatment applied on the mud as well, also will help engineers to improve the exploitation of time. In this innovated complete single kit the (Mud) drilling fluids engineer will be able to test all types of mud (OBM, WBM, SBM & Aerated Mud) and different brines as well in one single accurate automated stage.
Description
AUTOMATED MUD TESTING KIT (AMTK)
TECHNICAL FIELD:
Oil field is one of the most sensitive operations that require accordingly special performance, monitoring and supervision as well as accurate numbers and adequate planning ahead.
One of the most important factors in the daily drilling operation is drilling fluids (Mud), the function of drilling fluids describes the tasks which the drilling fluids are capable of performing, although some may not be essential on every well. Removing cuttings from the well and controlling formation pressures are of primary importance on every well, though the order of importance is determined by well conditions and current operations.
While drilling the (Mud) drilling fluids parameters are changing due to many reasons including depletion, evaporation, influxes, contamination, drilled solids, human mistakes... extra. This drilling fluid has to be tested consistently to monitor its performance and the change that took place in the parameters while drilling to react accordingly by readjusting/maintaining/fine-tuning the mud by many ways as bleeding, blending, adding chemicals and/or base fluid, this to ensure having good parameters as per program.
BACKGROUND ART:
The normal known (Mud) drilling fluids testing way is by using individual physical testing equipment (ΗΤΗΡ, API water loss, Retort, VG-meter...etc.) and chemical titration as well, but in this innovated complete single kit the (Mud) drilling fluids engineer will be able to test all types of mud (OBM, WBM, SBM & Aerated Mud) and different brines as well in one single accurate automated stage.
The API (American Petroleum Institute) has recommended standard methods of conducting field and laboratory tests for drilling fluids (Mud) and this includes some physical tests (Every test is done separately) as well as chemical titrations for the mud and filtrate.
DISADVANTAGE OF THE OLD TESTING METHOD:
1. All tests are done separately.
2. All tests are humanly operated not self-operated.
3. Human mistakes/error.
4. Difficult cleaning process and requires long time.
5. Manual cleaning process.
6. Shortage of spare parts.
7. Parts lost or damaged by packing, storage and time.
8. Requires long time for testing (+/- 3 hours).
9. Reagents used in the chemical titrations expiration.
10. Run out of reagents used in the chemical titrations.
11. Contaminated reagents used in the chemical titrations.
12. Calibration equipment and fluids availability on rig site.
13. Calibration expiration for physical testing equipment.
14. Limited space in mud labs on most of the rigs to setup all the testing equipment.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION:
THE MAIN AIM OF THIS INNOVATION IS TO GET RESULTS FOR FLUID BEEN TESTED MORE ACCURATE AND IN PROPER TIME MANNER WITH NO HUMAN MISTAKES/ERRORS.
THE BENEFITS OF THE AUTOMATED MUD TESTING KIT (AMTK) INVENTION
1. Unique testing kit that never been done before.
2. Accuracy in the testing.
3. Full/complete mud check just in one press/click.
4. Eliminate human mistakes/error.
5. Improve the exploitation of time.
6. Will be requested/ordered by majority of the clients in most of the wild cat exploration wells (Deepwater, HTHP, ERD, shallow gas) which requires many tests to be done on daily basis to ensure having mud parameters within range.
7. Improves (Mud) drilling fluids engineers' performance by giving them accurate, easier and faster way for testing their mud.
8. Requires extremely less effort in setup testing equipment and cleaning at the end of testing than in the old testing way.
9. Able to perform many tests on the mud on daily basis (Not only one or two per day).
10. Apply the accurate treatment on the drilling fluids (Mud) according to test results.
11. Improve the client confident in the mud parameters and engineers.
12. Single testing kit instead of individual physical equipment together with chemical titrations.
13. Self-cleaning, calibrating and draining.
14. All tests are controlled/managed/done using touch screen.
15. Shock, water and dust resistance.
16. Built in voltage stabilizer.
17. Easily handled and transported.
AUTOMATED MUD TESTING PROCESS:
1. Place new filter paper and ceramic desk in the designated place for them in the testing kit.
2. Power on the automated mud testing kit (AMTK), using the touch screen in the front of the
equipment.
3. Add the mud sample to main tank "Tl " till it covers the printed sign on the side of the tank.
4. Using the touch screen, select mud check, and then select mud type (OBM or WBM).
5. Then select the mud check you are willing to do either complete/full mud check or you can
specify certain tests from the list to be done.
6. In case of complete mud check, the process will be as follows:
7. Two checks will be applied on the mud in tank Tl :
A. Emulsion stability for OBM.
B. PH for WBM.
8. According to the type of the mud that you've selected in the beginning (OBM or WBM) the machine will give signal to one of the two lines (L1/L2) to open & accordingly mud will start flowing in the specified line to the next tests.
WBM, Water Base Mud:
I. The fluid will flow in the specified line with the help of pump #2 to test (API water loss, V7) and in parallel to the other physical testing equipment (Retort, VG meter, HTHP, PPT & Sand content).
II. API water loss. V7: The test will generate a filtrate, this filtrate coming out from the test is
collected in a cylinder where a level transmitter will take the reading of the collected volume and store it to be listed in the final report.
III. After the reading of the filtrate is recorded/saved, the filtrate from Vessel #7 is then sending to titrations stage (Spectrophotometer, VI & V2).
IV. Filtrate enters the spectrophotometer for chemical analysis using color detection.
V. Reagents are selected according to the test name from WBM reagents inventory storage tank. VI. All the titrations are done sequentially and the reading are recorded and saved as well.
VII. Fluid flowed to physical equipment enters all tests in parallel at the same time (Retort, VG meter, HTHP, PPT & Sand content).
VIII. The physical tests are done and the results/readings are recorded and saved as well to be generated in the final report.
OBM. Oil Base Mud:
I. The fluid will flow in the specified line with the help of pump # 1 to titrations tests and in parallel to the other physical testing equipment (Retort, VG meter, HTHP, PPT & Sand content).
II. Results and readings from the titrations and the physical equipment are recorded and saved as well to be generated in the final report.
9. At the end of the test, the results will be generated on the screen on the front of the kit and with capability of printing and transfer on USB flash drive as well.
Calibration:
1. An automated calibration program will be installed in the software.
2. Calibration process will be hold by using base fluid (Either water or oil) from tanks T2 or T3.
3. It will facilitate the calibration process at any requested/desired time.
4. Consolidated/combined calibration results will be generated on the kit screen.
Cleaning:
1. Depending on the fluid type (Water Base or Oil Base) the cleaning fluid will be selected, either water from tank T2 or base oil from tank T3.
2. At the end of the test you'll be able to select clean or flush, accordingly the cleaning fluid will start to flow in all the lines using pump #3 or #4.
3. Dirty fluid coming out from all the lines and tests as well will be collected on the drain pan which is then discharged to the main discharge in the laboratory.
4. Then, steam generator will generate steam in all the lines and tests as well to insure all parts in the testing kit are properly cleaned.
