DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, a shelf display apparatus (1 ) is shown made up of the components of an attachment member (2) and a display panel (3). While only one attachment member (2) is shown, it will be appreciated that the panel (3) will usually be used with a pair, and sometimes more.
The two components (2) and (3) are suited for assembly on a shelf (4) of the kind having a crossbar (5) at its front edge.
The attachment member (2) is provided as a bifurcated clip with forwardly extending arms (6) and (7). The two arms (6) and (7) of the clip (2) diverge slightly and each carry oppositely disposed engaging formations (1 1 ) and (12). These formations (1 1 ) and (12) are provided at or near the ends of the arms (6) and (7).
The panel (3) is provided with a forwardly facing elongate, lipped channel (15). A web (10) extends between flanges (8) and (9) which support two inwardly extending lips (13) and (14) at operatively upper and lower outer edges of the channel (15).
The flanges (8) and (9) also extend to the rear of the panel (3). Internally protruding rib formations (16) and (17) are provided on the flanges (8) and (9), behind the web (10). These ribs (16) and (17) extend along the length of the flanges (8) and (9).
The panel (3) is extruded from suitable plastics material, for example polypropylene, into the cross-sectional profile depicted in the drawings.
Both the member (2) and the panel (3) are stiffly resiliently flexible. This is adequate to provide for a clip-fit between the engaging formations (1 1 ) and (12) and the ribs (16) and (17). In accordance with the invention a third lip (18) is provided on the web (10). The third lip (18) is adjacent or in a relatively close proximity to the lower channel lip (14).
The third lip (18) is provided as an interruption of the web (10). A rearwardly curved connector (19) extends along the length of the channel (15) between the lower flange (9) and a line of connection adjacent the third lip (18). This provides a free edge of the third lip (18) on an end of a projecting section of the web (10).
The connector (19) provides a trough between the two adjacent lips (14) and (18). The arrangement of components provides a pair of overlapping inner (20) and outer (21 ) lipped channels with the lower lip (14) in opposing relationship to the other two lips (13) and (18).
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the display panel (3) includes a sheet (22) made of resiliently flexible, transparent plastics material. The sheet (22) has a first (25) and second (23) longitudinal edges with a fold (24) provided therebetween. The fold (24) is located closer to the first edge (25). A strip (26) of material is provided as an interference fit to the inner channel (20). The first edge (25) and fold (24) locate under the two adjacent lips (14) and (18) with the material of the strip (26) flexed against the rearwardly curved connector (19). The configuration and fit of these components serves to anchor the sheet (22) to the display panel (3).
To the other side of the fold (24) extends a flap, screen portion (27) of the sheet (22). The second edge (23) is removably retained under the operatively upper lip (13) of the outer channel (21 ).
The shelf display apparatus (1 ) forms part of a pricing management and shelf packing system that is provided for a retail consumable product refrigerator. The system is suited for use with soft drinks as well as other beverages such as fruit juices, beers, and bottled water or with dairy products, for example. The products referred to are usually displayed in refrigerators having a number of shelves (4) and, usually, also a glass door (not shown). It should however be noted that the invention is not limited to use with refrigerators. It can be used with any retail products arranged on a display means that includes at least one shelve.
To fit an insert (not shown) to the display panel (3) the second edge of the flap (23) of the sheet (22) is un-tucked from behind the upper lip (13). The lower edge of the insert is pressed into the fold (24) of the sheet (22), under the lower lip (14). The upper edge (23) is tucked under the upper lip (13), with a body of the flexible insert bent to conform substantially to the curve of the web (10). A number of inserts can be fitted to the display panel (3) in side-by-side relationship. Once the inserts are properly in place, the second edge (23) of the sheet is tucked under the upper lip (13).
The sheet (22) protects the inserts. It also prevents easy removal of selected individual inserts - the flap (27) must first be released.
The product indicator inserts can remain in place for as long as their design is contemporary and they properly indicate desired packing channels (brand and volume). The price indicator inserts will be changed whenever there is a fluctuation in a product price.
Referring to Figures 4 to 10, an alternative embodiment of a display apparatus (30) includes panel (31 ) for a shelf (not shown). The panel (31 ) has a body that provides the same elongate, lipped (primary) channel (32) with a web (33) connected between outer flanges (34; 35) of the channel (32). Each flange (34; 35) of the primary channel (32) has an inward lip (36; 37). A third lip (38) is provided on the web (33) adjacent to and oppositely disposed to the operatively lower channel lip (37).
A resiliently flexible sheet (39) of transparent material is provided as a screen for the panel (31 ) with a first edge (40) locatable under the third lip (38) and bent to provide a fold (41 ) locatable under the oppositely disposed lip (37) of the channel (32). A section (42) of material between the first edge (40) and fold (41 ) of the sheet (39) is provided with an interference fit under the adjacent lips (37; 38). In this embodiment, the section of material is provided by longitudinally spaced apart tabs (42) with portions between the tabs (42) cut away.
The web (33) is interrupted to provide a free edge of the third lip (38) and includes a recess (43) provided by a rearwardly curved connector (44) extending between the third lip (38) and adjacent flange (35) of the primary channel (32). The spaced apart tabs (42) fit into the recess (43) between the lips (37; 38) and are bowed against the curved connector (44) to secure the screen (39) against easy removal from the panel (31 ).
A flap (45) of material, extending from the fold (41 ) to a second edge (46) of the sheet (39), is sized to be removably retained across the channel web (33) with the second edge (46) locatable under the other lip (36) of the channel.
In this embodiment, the web (33) includes a pair of closely arranged centrally located longitudinally extending middle flanges (47) each providing a pair of opposite, outwardly disposed lips (48) and dividing the channel into a pair of secondary parallel channels (49). Each of these secondary channels (49) is
provided between the middle flanges (47) and outer flanges (34; 35) of the panel (31 ), respectively.
The outer channel flanges (34; 35) both extend rearwardly, past the web (33). The panel (31 ) includes attachment members (50) provided as longitudinally spaced apart resilient shelf-engaging hooks (50) which are secured, using rivets (50.1 ) in this example, to a rearward extension (52) of the operatively upper flange (34). The hooks (50) are shown separate from the panel in Figure 4. The hooks (50) are moulded from plastics material with a curved top portion (51 ) that conforms to the inside contour of the extension (52) of the upper flange (34). A free end (53) of each hook (50) has a downward return (54) that is engageable with a rib (55) on a protrusion (56) provided on a rear side of the web (33). The returns (54) and rib (55) have inclined leading surfaces [that are brought into contact when the hooks (50) are moved towards the web (33)] and can be pressed into overlapping engagement which action is accommodated by the resilience of the hooks (50) which are deflected by the substantially rigid rib (55). This engagement is established once the hooks (50) have been past over a cross-bar at the front of a shelf (usually but not necessarily) in a refrigerator.
Each hook (50) is also provided with a protruding, downwardly inclined guide (57) on a curved operatively lower portion (58). With the returns (54) disengaged, the guides (57) can be located against the top of the shelf cross-bar to draw the lower portions (58) of the hooks (50) away from the web (33) for sliding of the free ends (53) over the cross-bar. This manipulation can be done holding only the panel (31 ) and enables easy fitment without having to hold open each hook (50) individually. Once the cross-bar is inside the hooks (50), the returns (54) are pressed into a groove provided behind the rib (55).
The display panel has a consistent side cross-sectional profile and is provided as a plastics material extrusion.
The inclusion of the middle flanges (47) and lips (48) provide for the panel (31 ) to have two adjacent parallel, lipped secondary channels (49) each of which, like the primary channel (32) that extends across the height of the panel (32), serves to removably receive inserts (60) having oppositely disposed, outwardly extending edges beatable beneath lips (36; 37; 48) of the channels (49).
In this description, the embodiments of the invention are illustrated for use with a pricing system for beverage bottles and cans of various volumes. The inserts (60) in Figure 7 comprise:
- graphic inserts (60.1 ) which include strip sheets of flexible planar material (61 ) printed with graphics (62) relating to products; and
- pricing inserts (60.2) which include strip sheets of flexible planar material (61 ) printed with a variable pricing array of digital-eight digits (63), which digits are provided in a light colour with a dark background to mark all the digits in a digital-eight and which digits can be unmarked with a dark marker pen.
In this example, graphic inserts (60.1 ) showing brands (or otherwise describing a product that is offered for sale) can be arranged along the top secondary channel (49) and pricing inserts (60.2) which show beverage container volume and price in the bottom secondary channel (49).
The transparent screen (39) will be located over the inserts (60.1 ; 60.2) extending between the flanges (34; 35) of the primary channel (32) with the inserts (60) in the lower channel (49) located in the fold (41 ). The upper and lower insert will correspond to a row of beverages packed on the shelf above the panel (31 ). The pricing inserts (60.2) can be changed while the graphic inserts (60.1 ) are maintained in the event that the prices need to be changed.
In Figures 9 and 10 the use of alternative inserts (60.3) is illustrated. The pricing inserts (60.3) include a substantially rigid plastics material chassis (64) that carries a variable pricing array (65) of digital-eight digits, which digits (66) are rotatably supported by the chassis (38) with opposite sides provided in different colours to mark or unmark a digit in a digital-eight (65). The digits (66) have opposite sides provided in different colours (indicated "x" for dark and "y" for light) to mark or unmark each digit (66) in a digital-eight (65). The chassis (64) is provided in a size that fits into the primary channel (32). These pricing inserts (60.3) are shown in more detail in Figures 8a to 8c.
Referring more specifically to Figure 8b, the pricing insert (60.3) includes a pair of operatively rearwardly extending flanges (67) along opposite parallel sides of the chassis (64) with an outwardly extending lip (68), each providing an edge, for location beneath oppositely disposed cooperating lips (36; 37) on the outer flanges (34; 35).
The chassis (64) is sufficiently resilient and deformable across a portion thereof located between the flanges (67) for insertion past the oppositely disposed lips (36; 37) of and retention within the primary channel (32) but can also slide into the channel (32) at the open sides of the extruded body.
The chassis (64) is provided with a front wall (69) and sidewalls (70) that connect the top and bottom flanges (67). The sidewalls (70) are shorter than the flanges (67) and accommodate the screen (39) and middle flanges (47) which the insert (60.3) fits over.
A graphic insert (not shown) with the same configuration as the pricing insert (60.3) but formed without the openings for the digital-eights (65) described below may also be used with the panel (31 ). The side profile of such a graphic insert would be as illustrated in the cross-sectional view of Figure 8a. The front wall (69) will carry a sticker with branding, for example.
The digits (66) of the pricing insert (60.3) are respectively located in corresponding openings (71 ) through the chassis front wall (69) having an axle (72) which is moulded across the opening (71 ) to support the digit (66). The digits (66) from two of the digital-eights (65) have been removed in Figure 8b to show these details.
Each digit (66) comprises a first half of light coloured plastics material ("y") and a second half of dark coloured plastics material ("x"). The chassis (64) is moulded from a corresponding colour dark or light plastics material. The first and second halves of the digit (66) are configured to form a passage over the axle (72) and are sonically welded into engagement over the axle (72).
In this embodiment, each digit (66) has a longitudinal recess (not shown) formed between opposite halves with edges of the digit (66) on either side of the recesses providing an interference fit through the opening (71 ) in the chassis (64). This configuration serves to retain location of the digit (66) in an operative position within the opening (71 ). In addition, variable description means (73) will be provided by stickers that are secured to the front wall (69) of the chassis (64), with cut-outs that fit around the digital-eights (65) of the pricing means. In this embodiment, these stickers include digital-eights of the kind for use with marker pens to indicate volume (in millilitres) and number of beverage units corresponding to a marked price.
In Figure 9, a sheet material graphic insert (60.4) is shown located in the primary channel (32). The insert (60.4) is the same length as the panel (31 ) and provides a graphic backing with brand details of a beverage. Two of the pricing inserts (60.3) are also fitted to the primary channel (32). These are located over the screen (39). The variable description means (73) on the inserts (60.3) allows for
a price to be set for different volume and units of a beverage (a single or six-pack for example) and/or for bottles or cans.
Figure 10 shows three of the same pricing inserts (60.3) which will be fitted over the screen. Three sheet material graphic inserts (60.5) will be located behind the screen. The graphic inserts (60.5) are sized to fit across the primary channel (32) and a width suited for spacing apart between the pricing inserts (60.3) that overlie the screen (39). It will be appreciated that the first embodiment of the panel (3) can be made in a size to receive either the smaller inserts (60.1 ; 60.2) of the secondary channels (49) or those that fit into the primary channel (32) of the panel (31 ) of the second embodiment. The panel (3; 31 ) of the invention enables a cooler or refrigerator shelf beverage organizing system wherein rows of a beverage can be arranged according to the graphic and pricing inserts (60) that are presented along the front of the shelf. The panel allows the inserts to be moved or replaced in the panel depending on stock and shelf packing requirements.
The top edge (23; 46) of the screen (27; 39) can be undipped to change the inserts but remains fastened to the panel and can be easily clipped back into place to prevent or deter against tampering with the inserts. When undipped, the screen (27; 39) in the illustrated embodiments is supported upwardly from the bottom flange (14; 35). In this condition, the screen can be easily deflected away from the panel and changing of inserts is relatively unobstructed.
The clip or hook mechanisms of the attachment members (2; 50), particularly the version of the second embodiment, enable easy fitment to a variety of shelf configurations of the kind having parallel bars that run front to back and can accommodate a variety of front end cross-bar configurations. The upper portion
of the hooks and extension of the upper flange will be suitably dimensioned to fit over a shelf-cross bar of most configurations. Changes to these components or the dimensions can be made if necessary to facilitate wider application to crossbar configurations.
The invention enables a pricing and shelf packing system with features that promote interchangeability of inserts and convenience in use. The necessary or desired branding and the relevant pricing per unit information can be communicated to a consumer by the panel at the front of the shelf and the panel allows this to be set out in various configurations which may be tailored to particular beverage layout and requirements per shelf.
A person skilled in the art will appreciate that a number of changes can be made to the features of the described embodiment without departing from the scope of the current invention.
