Description

Clip for Fastening to a Flat Component
The invention relates to a clip for fastening an object to a flat component, having a body that has a receiving slot with an insertion opening for accommodating the flat component, has a first guide section and a second guide section that are located on opposite sides of the receiving slot, and has at least one locking finger that is located on the first guide section and extends from the first guide section in the insertion direction and in the direction of the second guide section, and a free end of which finger projects into the receiving slot, wherein the at least one locking finger is attached to the first guide section by elastically deformable webs that form an axis extending crosswise to the insertion direction and parallel to the receiving slot.
Clips of the specified type are used in automotive manufacture, among other applications, for attaching objects to flat components, such as plate edges, profiles, or strips. The clip, with its insertion opening forward, is placed on the flat component, whereby the component enters the receiving slot and is held in place in the receiving slot by the locking finger. An object can then be attached to the clip using additional fastening means.
In order to achieve high resistance to pull-off of the clip from the flat component, the locking finger of the clip often is designed such that a sharp edge thereof is pressed against the flat component and digs into the flat component, in particular under the action of pull-off forces. For example, a clip of the specified type known from EP 2,405,148 A2 has a locking finger with a tongue projecting out of the free end of the locking finger, which tongue is made of a hard material, for example metal, so that the clip can better dig into the flat component effectively. The good retaining action of such a clip design has the disadvantage that the clip can only be removed with difficulty, for example in the case of a repair, and there is a risk of damage to the flat component from the hard, and often sharp-edged, end of the locking finger or fingers during removal of the clip. Especially when the flat component is coated with paint or another material for corrosion protection, unwanted damage to the corrosion-preventive coating may occur.
The object of the invention is to improve a clip of the initially mentioned type such that the clip can be removed from the flat component that it is attached to without damaging the flat component.
The said object is attained according to the invention by a clip with the features specified in claim 1 . Especially advantageous embodiments of the clip are specified in the additional claims.
According to the invention, a clip for fastening an object to a flat component, having a body that has a receiving slot with an insertion opening for accommodating the flat component, has a first guide section and a second guide section that are located on opposite sides of the receiving slot, and has at least one locking finger that is located on the first guide section and extends from the first guide section in the insertion direction and in the direction of the second guide section, and a free end of which finger projects into the receiving slot, wherein the at least one locking finger is attached to the first guide section by elastically deformable webs that form an axis extending crosswise to the insertion direction and parallel to the receiving slot, wherein a release lever is attached to the at least one locking finger of the clip in such a way that when the clip is fastened to a flat component accommo-dated in the receiving slot, the at least one locking finger can be moved into a release position by a force acting on the release lever in a release direction, in which release position the free end of the locking finger is disengaged from the flat component.
The clip according to the invention has the advantage that pressure on the release lever can release it from a component held in its receiving slot without damaging the component. In addition, fastening of the clip to a flat component can be facilitated by a pressure on the release lever, thus protecting the surface of the flat component by avoiding or reducing contact with the locking finger. The release lever can be arranged on the locking finger in a variety of ways. The only important thing is that a force can be made to act on the release lever that effects a release motion of the locking finger, causing the locking finger to be moved out of the receiving slot. Moreover, the release lever must not hinder fastening of the clip to a flat component. Especially advantageous is a design in which the release lever is located on the side of the locking finger facing away from the receiving slot, and extends crosswise to the insertion direction. In this design, a force exerted on the lever in the direction opposite the insertion direction causes a movement of the locking finger in the release direction. As a result, pressure on the release lever opposite the insertion direction can support placement of the clip on a flat component while simultaneously pulling the locking finger back out of the receiving slot. Consequently, assembly of the clip without damaging the flat component can be accomplished especially easily, for example, by hand.
Viewed in the direction of the axis of the elastically deformable webs, the release lever preferably has an essentially triangular profile whose width decreases with increasing distance from the locking finger. This results in an especially deflection-resistant connection of the release lever to the locking finger, and a favorable distribution of the flexural load over the length of the release lever.
In a preferred embodiment, the body of the clip, including locking finger(s), is made of plastic, wherein the at least one locking finger has an insert of harder material that forms a locking tongue projecting out of the locking finger on the free end of the locking finger that projects into the receiving slot. The insert can be made of a metal, or of a plastic reinforced with glass fibers or carbon fibers. In this design, the clip advantageously combines the favorable characteristics of a plastic clip with the characteristics of a metal clamp. The harder material of the insert provides high retention forces for flat components having no undercut, and thus a high resistance to pull-out of the flat component from the receiving slot of the clip.
The greater elasticity of the plastic of which the locking finger and its attachment in the guide section are made and the favorable sliding properties of the plastic permit lower assembly forces, and facilitate installation of the clip by hand. Since the insert is relatively small, it can be made of rustproof steel without great influence on the manufacturing costs in order to achieve good corrosion resistance. The clip, which is made of plastic with the exception of the insert, has no external sharp edges that could cause injury during handling and installation of the clip by hand.
In the clip according to the invention, the first and second guide sections can be connected to one another by a rear section located opposite the insertion opening, and the rear section can form a stop for limiting the depth of the receiving slot in the insertion direction.
To connect the clip to an object that can be fastened to a flat component with the aid of the clip, the clip can be provided with a fastening section designed for fastening an object. The fastening section advantageously can be located on the side of the second guide section facing away from the receiving slot and/or on the side of the rear section facing away from the receiving slot. In advantageous manner, the fastening section has a fastening opening for accommodating a holding strap.
The body of the clip can be molded from thermoplastic material using the injection molding process, and the insert can be partially surrounded by the plastic of the locking finger by means of the molding. The invention is explained in detail below with reference to an exemplary embodiment that is shown in the drawings. The drawings show: a perspective view of a clip according to the invention with first guide section facing the viewer,
a perspective view of the insertion side of the clip from Figure 1 , a side view of the clip from Figure 1 with second guide section facing the viewer,
a view of the insertion side of the clip from Figure 1 , an end view of the clip from Figure 1 , and
a view of the rear, facing away from the insertion side, of the clip from Figure 1 .
The clip 10 shown in Figures 1 through 5 consists primarily of a body 1 1 , which is made of plastic. The body 1 1 has a U-shaped profile, which is composed of a first guide section 12, a second guide section 13 parallel thereto, and a rear section 14 connecting the guide sections 12, 13. Extending between the guide sections 12, 13 is a receiving slot 16 with an insertion opening 17 opposite the rear sections 14.
The guide sections 12, 13 are each provided with a lead-in ramp 18, 19 oriented diagonally outward at the insertion opening. Located at the outer ends thereof on the sides facing away from the insertion opening 16 are reinforcing ribs 20, the height of which increases towards the rear section 14. An additional reinforcing rib 21 is formed in the center of the guide section 12. The reinforcing ribs 20, 21 increase the resistance of the guide sections 1 1 , 12 to bending of the receiving slot 16.
To secure a flat component inserted in the receiving slot 16, such as a strip or rib, the clip 10 has two locking fingers 23. The locking fingers 23 are each located in an opening 24 of the first guide section 12 and are molded as a single piece with the body 2. The guide section 13 is provided on the side opposite the locking fingers 23 with core openings 25 required by molding technology. At their ends next to the insertion opening 17, the locking fingers 23 are joined to the guide section 12 by elastically deformable webs 27, 28. The spring force exerted by the locking fingers 23 with which the locking fingers 23 are pressed against a component inserted in the receiving slot 16 can be determined by the dimensioning of the cross-section of the webs 27, 28.
Each locking finger 23 contains an insert 29 made of corrosion-resistant metal, preferably stainless steel. The insert 29 is in the shape of a rectangular plate, which is embedded for approximately half its length in the plastic of the locking finger 23. The insert 29 may also have a different shape, although its shape must be matched to the locking finger. In the interior of the locking finger 23, the insert can have a hole, which is filled with plastic and has the purpose of anchoring the insert 29 in the locking finger 23. The insert 29 forms a tongue 30, which projects out of the plastic material at the free end of the locking finger 23 and extends obliquely into the receiving slot 16. At the free end, the tongue 30 is provided with a sharp edge. The tongue 30 extends in the insertion direction at an angle of approximately 30° to the center plane of the receiving slot 16, as can be seen in Figure 5. An end section 31 of the insert 29 opposite the tongue 30 is exposed, and serves to support the insert 29 in the injection mold during molding of the clip 10. n the rear side facing away from the insertion opening 17, each locking finger 23 is provided with a release lever 33 that is made of plastic and is an integral part of the locking finger 23. The release lever 33 extends essentially perpendicular to the center plane of the receiving slot 16. When seen in an end view as in Figure 5, it has an essentially triangular profile that becomes narrower with increasing distance from the locking finger 23. The freestanding, pointed end of the release lever 33 is rounded. The side of the release lever 33 facing the rear section 14 forms an actuation surface 34 at which the release lever 33 can be actuated manually or with the aid of a tool. When the release lever 33 is actuated at the actuation surface 34 with a release force L, this causes a rotation of the unit composed of the release lever 33 and the locking finger 23 about the common center axis of the webs 27, 28, in which process the webs 27, 28 are elastically deformed. As a result of this rotation, the tongue 30 of the locking finger 23 is pivoted in the direction of the first guide section 12, and the spacing between the edge of the tongue 30 and the second guide section 13 is increased. As a function of the design of the resistance to deformation of the webs 27, 28, with sufficient release force L the locking finger 23 can be rotated far enough that the tongue 30 is moved completely into the opening 24 in the guide section 12, so that it no longer can come into contact with a component located in the receiving slot 16. First and foremost, the dimensioning of the resistance to deformation of the webs 27, 28 determines the spring force with which the edge at the end of the tongue 30 is pressed against the component placed in the receiving slot 16, since the retention force of the clip depends on this.
In order to be able to fasten an object to the clip 10, the clip 10 has a first fastening section 36 and a fastening section 37. The first fastening section 36 is located on the outside of the rear section 14 and has two U- shaped brackets 38 with legs 39, 40. The legs 39 are integrally joined to the guide section 12 on both sides and at a distance from the reinforcing rib 21 . The legs 40 are molded onto the guide section 13. The top sections 41 of the brackets 38 are located at a distance from the rear section 14 and are connected to one another by a plate-like bridge element 42. In this way, the top sections 41 and the bridge element 42 form multiple fastening openings 43 that are accessible in the longitudinal direction or crosswise to the rear section 14 to introduce holding straps.
The second fastening section 37 has a first U-shaped bracket 44 with legs 45 that are arranged to be essentially perpendicular to the guide section 13 and are connected to the guide section 13 at their ends. Located parallel to and a distance apart from the bracket 44 is a second bracket 46, whose legs 47 are connected to the ends of the legs 40 and the guide section 13. At a distance from the guide section 13, the two brackets 44, 46 have top sections 48, 49 that are connected by a bridge element 50, which likewise is located at a distance from the guide section 13. The two brackets 44, 46 and the bridge element 50 form fastening openings 51 through which fastening means such as straps or the like can be passed in two different directions in order to fasten an object to the clip 10.
