- the present invention provides an access structure, an optional embodiment of which is depicted in Figures 1 to 8.
- the access structure (also referred to as access means, dispenser or detachable portion) is defined by a series of frangible lines or frangible sections: 52, 40, 34, 36, 44, 32, 38; an initiating section 23A and initiating section notches 64, 62.
- a first frangible line 52 is disposed in the first side panel 18 and defines therein a removable section 54, 56 of the first side panel 18.
- frangible lines 40, 34 are disposed in the minor end closure flap 26A and are configured to separate the minor end closure flap 26A into two sections 21 D which is removed with the access structure; and 21 C which remains attached to the carton 90 (via the hinge connection 25C with the top panel 16).
- An initiating section notch 64 is formed by an arched cut out in the minor end flap 26A.
- Additional frangible lines 44, 36 are disposed in the major end closure flap 24A along with the initiator section 23A.
- Further frangible lines 38, 32 are disposed in the minor end closure flap 22A and are configured to separate the minor end closure flap 22A into two sections 21 A which is removed with the access structure; and 21 B which remains attached to the carton 90 (via the hinge connection 25A with the bottom panel 12).
- An initiating section notch 64 is formed by an arched cut out in the minor end flap 22A.
- the initiator section 23A optionally comprises a push tab 46 which may be defined at least in part by an arcuate frangible line 50 and in part by a frangible or weakened line or fold line 48.
- the push tab 46 may provide a weakened area which may more easily be broken away from the remainder of the major end flap 24A for starting the detachment of the detachable access structure.
- Fold line 48 may assist in the inward folding of a leading part of push tab 46 to create an opening in the carton 90 which a user can exploit to achieve a stronger grasp of the remainder of the initiator section 23A.
- the linear portion of the initiator section 23A between fold line 42 and frangible or cut line 44 may then readily follow the leading edge push tab 46 into the carton for folding about fold line 42 over the remaining part of the initiator section 23A defined by frangible line 36 and the cut edge of the major end flap 24A.
- the carton 90 can be formed by a series of sequential folding operations in a straight line machine so that the carton is not required to be rotated or inverted to complete its construction.
- the folding process is not limited to that described below and may be altered according to particular manufacturing requirements.
- the part-formed, flat folded blank can be opened into an open-ended tubular body.
- the carton 90 comprises two composite end wall structures, each constructed by first folding the minor end flaps 26B/24B; 26A/22A about their respective connections 27C, 27A, 25C, 25A with the main panels 16, 12.
- the major end flaps 24B and 24A connected to the main panel 14 may then be folded about their respective connection 27B, 25B with the second side panel 14 into at least partial overlaying arrangement with the minor end flaps 26B/24B; 26A 22A respectively.
- Adhesive may be applied to either the remaining major end flap 28B, 28A and/or the folded major end flaps 24B and 24A.
- the remaining major end flap 28B, 28A is then folded about its connection 27D, 25D with the top panel 18 and affixed to part of the major end flap disposed beneath it.
- Figure 2 an outer view of the composite end wall 28A 26A 24A 22A can be seen and in Figure 6 an internal view of the end wall 28A 26A 24A 22A is provided.
- the structure of the access structure is also illustrated.
- the access structure further comprises the initiator section 23A that is contiguously formed with the removable sections 21 A, 21 D of the minor end flaps 22A, 26A and aligned with the initiating section notches 64, 62.
- the initiator section 23A and the initiating section notches 64, 62 co-operate so that a user can press or push inwardly the initiator section 23A, breaking the frangible lines 44, 36 to press a leading part 46 of the initiator section 23A into the carton 90 (see Figures 4 And 5).
- the leading part 46 of the initiator section 23A is then foldable about a fold line 42 (see Figure 1 ) and due to the complementary shaping and co-operative structures of the leading part of the initiator section 23A and the minor end flaps 26A, 22A (in particular the size and position of the initiating section notches 64, 62), the leading part of the initiator section 23A is foldable at least substantially into overlapping face-contacting relationship with the inside surfaces of a part of minor end flaps 21 A, a part of minor end flap 21 D and a part of major end flap 28A.
- the leading part of the initiator section 23A is shaped such that when folded over (as afore described and as illustrated in Figure 6), the leading part over laps and provides a useful and effective means of grasping sections 21 A, 21 D and 28A of the access structure that may not be directly attached to one another.
- the overlapped nature, size and shape of the folded over portion of the initiator portion 23A assists the effective and clean detachment of portions 21 A, 21 D, 28A and 23A from the carton 90 by breaking the frangible lines 34, 32, 38, 40 and 52.
- FIG. 7 A further step in a user's progressive detachment of the access structure is illustrated in Figure 7 and it can be seen in Figure 8 that once all detachable parts of the access structure are fully removed that endmost of the articles A are sufficiently exposed for their withdrawal, whilst at the same time being sufficiently retained to mitigate against the inadvertent or unintentional egress of one or more articles from the opened carton 90.
- the relative orientation of the major flaps 28A, 24A, 28B, 24B, minor flaps 26A, 22A, 26B, 22B, article orientation and relative position of the access structure may be further understood when consideration is given to a packaging machine (also referred to as packer) that may be used to assemble a package.
- Articles A (such as cans or bottles) may typically be loaded into the ends of a carton by being slid along on their bases and pushed or corralled into the ends of an open carton. The or each end of a carton may be held open as the carton 90 is moved along, on a bottommost panel, alongside a stream of articles.
- the first or second side panel 18, 14 may be bottommost when the carton 90 is loaded in a packaging machine.
- the articles A are positioned such that their height extends between what have been referred to as the first and second side walls 18, 14 albeit that during packaging these panels 18, 14 may be bottommost and topmost (and vice versa) respectively.
- the loading orientation of the articles is relatively fixed by the packaging machine, articles A are not rolled into cartons, but are pushed along their bases; furthermore, the major end flaps of the carton are preferably oriented to be topmost and bottom most (rather than to the sides).
- the access structure has been described as being formed in the first side panel 18 and composite end wall, it will be understood, that alternatively or additionally, the access structure could be formed at least in part, in the second side panel 14. Whereas predominantly it is intended for the access structure to allow access to the articles A when the carton 90 is disposed on its closed end (as illustrated in Figure 8) or when the carton 90 is disposed on its second side wall 14. It will also be realised that the access structure once deployed may effectively serve to allow access to the articles A when the carton 90 is disposed on its first side panel 18, top panel 16 or bottom panel 12 (any of which panels 18, 16, 12, when the carton 90 is so oriented could then be considered as being the "bottom panel").
- the remaining part of the opened end wall portion 23B in Figure 8 is disposed alongside two vertically oriented articles A.
- the articles A closest to the retaining part 23B that remains after detachment of the access structure are upright relative to that retaining part 23B.
- the cans C that are closest to a stopper wall (80) of the carton (10) that remains after a dispenser (20) has been at least partially detached from the carton extend substantially along the height axis of the endmost articles (C).
- the carton disclosed in WO2002/47990 is more restricted in the orientations it may adopt once the dispenser has been deployed than the carton 90 of the present invention may be once the access structure has been deployed.
- a further beneficial aspect of the present invention is that the access structure is optionally formed in a main panel 18 and optionally in each of the four end closure panels 28A, 26A, 24A, 22A forming the composite end wall 28A/26A/24A/22A.
- portions of the minor end flaps 26A, 22A preferably form part of the access structure and are detachable from the carton 90, and because these minor end flaps 26A, 22A are not necessarily attached (by adhesive for example) to any other of the end closure panels 28A, 24A, to assist in the separation of these smaller panels 26A, 22A and detachment of small sections 21 D, 21 A, the initiating section 23A and shaped notches 64, 62 may be particularly advantageous.
- FIGS 9A to 10B alternative embodiments of the present invention are illustrated, wherein optional alternative shapes and configurations for the access structure, shaped notches and/or initiating section are disclosed.
- like numerals have, where possible, been used to denote like parts, albeit with the addition of the prefix "100" or "200" and so on to indicate that these features belong to the second and third embodiments.
- the alternative embodiments share many common features with the first embodiment and therefore only the differences from the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 8 will be described in any greater detail.
- the access structure comprises a smaller and squarer shaped detachable portion 154 formed in the first side panel 1 18.
- the initiating section formed in panel 123B may not comprise frangible lines 50 and 48 comprised in the first illustrated embodiment, but may comprise a non-interrupted portion hinged to the major end flap 24A along fold line 148.
- the initiator section may still be pressed inwardly of the carton 190 to initiate removal of the detachable access structure.
- the initiator section comprises as series of curved edges (once broken out) and in complimentary manner, the minor end closure tabs are shaped, optionally with a notch 162, 164 to provide a clearance space for the initiator section to fold though.
- the minor end flaps are shaped such that after the initiator section has been folded through the gap provided by the notches 162, 164 the initiator section can be folded over into contacting relationship with detachable portions 121 A, 121 D of the minor flaps to assist the detachment of those portions 121A, 121 D by the breaking of the frangible lines 140, 138 that are aligned with the connection between the minor end flaps and the adjacent main panels 1 12, 1 16.
- the access structure again comprises a smaller and squarer shaped detachable portion 254 formed in the first side panel 218.
- the initiating section formed in panel 223B is closer to the first side panel 216 and does not comprise frangible lines 50 and 48 comprised in the first illustrated embodiment.
- the initiator section 246 may still be pressed inwardly of the carton 190 to initiate removal of the detachable access structure.
- the initiator section comprises as series of squarer edges (once broken out) and in complimentary manner, the minor end closure tabs are shaped, optionally with a notch 262, 264 to provide a clearance space for the initiator section to fold though.
- minor end flaps are shaped such that after the initiator section has been folded through the gap provided by the notches 262, 264 the initiator section can be folded over into contacting relationship with detachable portions 221 A, 221 D of the minor flaps to assist the detachment of those portions 221 A, 221 D by the breaking of the frangible lines that are aligned with the connection between the minor end flaps and the adjacent main panels 212, 216.
- the size and shape of the panels and apertures may be adjusted to accommodate articles of differing size or shape.
- the size and shape of the detachable portions of the access structure may be varied from that illustrated.
- hinged connection should not be construed as necessarily referring to a single fold line only; indeed it is envisaged that hinged connection can be formed from one or more of the following, a short slit, a frangible line or a fold line without departing from the scope of the invention.
- frangible line should not be construed as necessarily referring to a single frangible line nor to a straight line and may be formed from one or more or a combination of: a series of full or half-depth cuts, a perforate line a weakened tearable line.
- access structures according to the present invention may be employed in one or more or a combination of the following list, which is non-limiting and non- exhaustive: cartons of the top loading type; cartons of the bottom loading type; wraparound style cartons; cartons holding a range of articles (for example, including, but not exclusively: cans, bottles, pouches, tins, boxes and pots); cartons with no handle; cartons with strap handles; and manually assembled cartons.
