Abstract
Process for forming a container for a tottle comprising: - compression moulding a solid PET gob to create a preform, - placing preform mould in a blow mould cavity, - blow moulding the preform to produce the desired tottle container shape.
Description
PACKAGE
The present invention relates to a container comprising PET (polyethylene terephthalate).
The closest prior art is US2006/0163248 (Archeny) which discloses a top-down storage container which may be made from a monolayer plastics material which may be a polyamide, for example nylon; a polyolefin such as polyethylene, especially a low density polyethylene (LDPE) or high density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene; a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) or others.
Despite the prior art there remains the need for improved PET tottles. There are two main methods for producing a container for squeezable containers: injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) and extrusion blow moulding (EBM). EBM is commonly used for polypropylene (PP) or high density polyethylene (HDPE) materials and involves the extension of a molten parison. However, this process is not suitable for PET containers and so should one wish to take advantage of the benefits of using PET (improved sustainability, high gloss, improved barrier properties and overall aesthetics) one must use ISBM.
Using the conventional practice of ISBM, there remains an injection point or gate. This gate is a solid cylinder of material and is where the molten PET enters the preform injection mould. The gate is located at the end of the container opposite the opening where the container material is injected. Due to the need to
adequately fill the mould during the injection moulding process, the tip of the preform where the gate is located needs to be reasonably thick.
Accordingly, and in a first aspect, the present invention provides a process for making a tottle container according to claim 1 .
By tottle is meant a top-down storage container.
We have surprisingly found that a PET tottle made using compression moulded preform, allows for both a thinner wall section in the non-capped end of the tottle i.e. the end visible to the consumer on-shelf, and the removal of the gate (injection point).
In the prior art ISBM process, when this tip is stretched and blown the vertical stretch rod (used on all stretch blow moulding machines) pushes the gate along the axis of the tottle container and locates it in the base. This results in very little material being stretched away from the tip, giving the thick wall section. This artefact manifests itself in the form of a thickened portion which is especially unsightly in a tottle where the artefact is located on the top of the container. This is in contrast with the method according to the first aspect of the invention. Here, the preform is formed by compressing a solid cylindrical PET gob, a continuous extrusion of PET which is cut into doses, and therefore doesn't have a gate, thus the preform mould, and therefore the blow moulded container, can be thinner at the tip.
A benefit of the invention is thus that the PET tottle container made from a compression moulded preform is more aesthetically pleasing to the consumer. A further advantage is that the tottle according to the invention does not have a thickened portion at its top thus making it easier to squeeze and so reducing the amount of material left in the corners of the container when nearly empty.
In a second aspect, there is provided a tottle container obtainable by the process of the first aspect.
ln a third aspect of the invention there is provided a tottle obtainable by taking a tottle container obtainable by a process according to the first aspect and attaching a dispenser to an outlet of the tottle container.
The dispenser also acts as a base upon which the tottle can be stood.
Preferably, the dispenser comprises a base and a flip-top cap which can be flipped to allow egress of the contents of the container.
Preferably, the tottle container is at least 10 cm from base to dispensing end. Preferably, the tottle container has a reservoir volume of at least 100 ml.
