- the proximal fastening section 70 and the distal fastening section 72 may be of a hook and loop type fastening arrangement in which the respective sections 70, 72 each include opposite, but complementary fastening components
- the proximal fastening section 70 may be of a hook configuration and the distal fastening section 72 would then be of a loop configuration.
- the proximal fastening section 70 may be of a loop configuration and the distal fastening section 72 would then be of a hook configuration.
- a closed section 74 within the tow member 14 is formed.
- the effective length of the tow member 14 e.g., the distance between the bottom attachment region 44 and the closed section 74
- the closed section 74 receives the engagement member 42.
- the harness 10 also includes the engagement member 42 for releasably engaging a handle 76 of the wheeled luggage 78 to connect or couple the harness 10 with the luggage 78.
- the engagement member 42 may be constructed of any material, for example one or more polymeric materials, fiberglass, and/or metal that provide sufficient rigidity to retain the handle 76 of the wheeled luggage 78 within the engagement member 42. Further, the engagement member 42 can be made of a material that allows resilient deformation so that the luggage handle 76 may be releasably received within the engagement member 42.
- the engagement member 42 preferably includes an upper end 80, an opposite distal end or free lower end 82, and a body 84 that extends between the upper end 80 and the distal end 82. As best viewed in FIG.
- the body 84 includes a generally linear portion 86 that extends from the upper end 80 and a curved portion 88 that extends from the linear portion 86 to the distal end 82 so that the distal end 82 is directed toward the linear portion 86. More specifically, the distal end 82 may be directed toward a fixed protuberance 90 that extends from the linear portion 86.
- An arcuate receiving region 92 is defined within the interior region bounded by the curved portion 88 and at least a portion of the linear portion 86.
- the fixed protuberance 90 and the distal end 82 of the engagement member 42 are disposed generally across from one another to define an access opening or entrance 94 to the arcuate receiving region 92 of the engagement member 42.
- the access opening 94 is normally open to allow the passage of the handle 76 of the luggage 78.
- the fixed protuberance 90 is illustrated as extending from the linear portion 86 with a smoothed radius 96. This curvature can be beneficial for capturing the handle 76 of the luggage 78 within the engagement member 42 and preventing easy escape of the handle 76 through the access opening 94. Since the engagement member 42 is of a resilient material, the distance between the fixed protuberance 90 and the distal end 82 may be varied. Further, the curvature of the protuberance 90 can cooperate with the arcuate receiving region 92 to allow limited rotation of the handle 76 within the engagement member 42. This allows the luggage 78 to be pulled at an angle that is comfortable to the wearer 24.
- the engagement member 42 can also include a slot 98 that is proximate the upper end 80. As illustrated, the slot 98 has a rectangular shape and may be sized and shaped to slidably receive the tow member 14.
- the distal end 62 of the tow member 14 is fed through the slot 98 and the proximal and distal fastening sections 70, 72 engage one another.
- the engagement member 42 is retained in the closed section 74 of the tow member 14.
- the distance between the center member 12 and the engagement member 42 may be varied by adjusting the point at which the proximal and distal fastening sections 70, 72 are engaged to one another.
- This ability to adjust the effective length of the tow member 14 allows the harness 10 to be customized to maximize the comfort for each individual harness wearer 24.
- the adjustability allows the luggage 78 to be towed by harness wearers 24 of different heights at a distance that allows the wearer 24 to maintain control over the luggage 78, but not have their walking impeded.
- the harness 10 also includes the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 that extend from the center member 12.
- the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 extend from the first upper attachment region 46 and the second upper attachment region 48, respectively, of the center member 12.
- the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 are for placement above first and second shoulders 20, 22 of a wearer 24.
- the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 cooperate with first and second lower strap members 26, 28 to define the first and second arm loops 30, 32.
- the first and second distribution members 38, 40 are disposed along the first and second upper strap members 16, 18.
- the first and second distribution members 38, 40 may be in an oval shape.
- the first and second distribution members 38, 40 can be made of natural or synthetic materials, or combination thereof.
- Each of the distribution members 38, 40 includes an interior side 100 that faces toward the wearer 24 and an exterior side 102 that is opposite the interior side 100. Thus, the exterior side 102 would face away from the wearer 24 when the harness 10 is worn.
- a cushioning member 104 can be disposed between the interior side 100 and the exterior side 102.
- the cushioning member 104 serves to increase the comfort of the harness 10 for the wearer 24 during use.
- the cushioning member 104 may be of foam or other impact absorbing material.
- the harness 10 may also include accessory areas 39, 41.
- the accessory areas 39, 41 are defined by the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 and the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 and are locations that the user 24 can conveniently reach.
- the accessory areas 39, 41 are zones to which accessories may be attached with commercially known means.
- the accessories may include pockets for the storage of common travel items, such as passports, flight tickets, and/or rental car agreements.
- cases for electronic devices such as mobile telephones or portable music players may be attached to the accessory areas 39, 41.
- the electronic devices may be directly attached to the accessory areas 39, 41.
- the accessory areas 39, 41 allow the user 24 to easily access frequently needed documents or devices without performing an extensive search of the luggage 78.
- the interior side 100 of either distribution member, or both distribution members can include a notice receiving area 106.
- the notice receiving area 106 can include text and/or symbols.
- the text and/or symbols may be screen printed, embroidered, or other commercially known means for applying graphics.
- important information regarding safe use of the harness 10 can be provided to the wearer 24 every time the wearer 24 dons the harness 10. Further, as the safety information and/or instructions are on the harness 10 and not on a piece of paper, there is no concern that the information will be lost or misplaced during the life of the harness 10.
- the first distribution member 38 and the second distribution member 40 can also each include at least one retention tag 108.
- each retention tag 108 of each of the first and second distribution members 38, 40 can be employed on each distribution member 38, 40. Further, when multiple retention tags 108 are used, they are in registry to allow slidable movement of the respective distribution members 38, 40 along the respective upper strap members 16, 18.
- the retention tag 108 is attached to the exterior side 102 and extends between opposite edges of the respective distribution member 38, 40.
- the retention tags 108 may be attached to the respective distribution members 38, 40 at locations inward from the opposite edges so as to limit free space between the retention tag 108 and the respective upper strap member 16, 18 as will be explained below.
- the first distribution member 38 and the second distribution member 40 slidably receive the respective first upper strap member 16 and the second upper strap member 18 between the respective retention tag 108 and the respective exterior side 102. Further, the first distribution member 38 and the second distribution member 40 are disposed along the respective first upper strap member 16 and the second upper si rap member 18 between the respective first and second engagement assemblies 34, 36 and the center member 12. This ensures that the first and second distribution members 38, 40 can be adjusted to be in the proper position for optimal comfort of the wearer 24. Additionally, the limited free space between the retention tag 108 and the respective upper strap member 16, 18 ensures that the respective distribution member remains where it is placed by the wearer 24.
- the first distribution member 38 and the second distribution member 40 can also each include a reinforcement member 107, 109 that extends about a perimeter 110 of the respective distribution member 38, 40.
- the reinforcement members 107, 109 may be made of the same or different material as the interior side 100 or the exterior side 102 of the distribution members 38, 40.
- the reinforcement members 107, 109 serve to connect the exterior side 102 of the respective first and second distribution member 38, 40 with the interior side 100 of the respective first and second distribution member 38, 40. Further, the reinforcement members 107, 109 help to maintain the shape of the respective distribution members 38, 40 and prevent rolling or fold over of the distribution member 38, 40, thereby increasing comfort for the wearer 24.
- the harness 10 also includes the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 that extend from the center member 12. Specifically, the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 extend from the first lower attachment region 50 and the second lower attachment region 52, respectively of the center member 12. The first and second lower strap members 26, 28 are for placement below the shoulders 20, 22 of the wearer 24 and the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 cooperate with the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 to define the first and second arm loops 30, 32. For maximum comfort and functionality, the wearer 24 inserts his arms into the respective arm loops 30, 32 to don the harness 10.
- the first upper strap member 16 and the second lower strap member 28 are preferably in the form of one continuous strap that is sandwiched between the interior face 54 and the exterior face 56 of the center member 12.
- the second upper strap member 18 and the first lower strap member 26 are one continuous strap that is sandwiched between the interior face 54 and the exterior face 56 of the center member 12.
- these combined strap members crisscross one another. With this arrangement, manufacturing can be simplified and the strength of the harness 10 is increased. However, it is understood that the upper and lower strap members could be separate straps.
- the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 are connected to the first and second upper strap members 16, 18 with first and second engagement assemblies 34, 36.
- the first and the second engagement assemblies 34, 36 can be constructed of any material, for example one or more polymeric materials, that provide sufficient rigidity to contain the respective strap members during operation of the harness 10.
- the first and second engagement assemblies 34, 36 can each include an upper buckle member 112, 114 and a lower buckle member 116, 118.
- the upper and lower buckle members 112, 114, 116, 118 are shaped and configured as is known in the art.
- the first and second upper buckle members 112, 114 serve to connect the respective first and second upper strap members 16, 18 and to the respective first and second lower strap members 26, 28 and to allow the length of the arm loops 30, 32 to be adjusted for optimal comfort of the wearer 24.
- first and second upper buckle members 112, 114 are sized so as to be larger than the space defined by the attachment of the respective retention tag 108 to the respective distribution member 38, 40. This limits the slidable movement of the respective distribution member 38, 40 along respective upper strap member 16, 18 to between the center member 12 and the respective upper buckle member 112, 114, thereby ensuring that the distribution member 38, 40 is disposed in the proper location on the shoulders 20, 22 of the wearer 24.
- the first and second lower buckle members 116, 118 are merely connected to the respective first and second lower strap members 26, 28 and serve to prevent a loose end of the lower strap member 26, 28 from becoming an inconvenience or annoyance to the wearer 24 by flapping.
- the harness 120 includes many of the same components as the embodiment described hereinbefore. For clarity, components that are similar in nature between the harness 120 and the harness 10 share the same numbering and will not be described in detail. It is understood that unless otherwise noted, the harness 120 includes the same components as the harness 10. [0039] In place of the center member 12, the harness 120 includes a container 122 from which the tow member 14, the first and second upper strap members 16, 18, and the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 extend. As is known in the art, the container 122 may be used to store items for the user 24. The container 122 may be made of any number of natural and/or synthetic materials.
- the container 122 includes an interior face 124 that faces toward the wearer 24, and an exterior face 126 that is opposite the interior face 124. Further, a side face 128 extends between the interior face 124 and the exterior face 126 to define the container 122.
- An upper zipper 130 may be used to releasably connect the side face 128 to the exterior face 126.
- the container 122 may optionally include a lower pouch 132 for additional storage for the convenience of the user 124. Access to the lower pouch 132 is gained through a lower zipper 134 that can be operated to create an opening.
- first and second upper strap members 16, 18 and the first and second lower strap members 26, 28 extending from the area defined by the junction of the interior face 124 and the side face 128 and the tow member 14 extending from the exterior face 126
- the strap members 16, 18, 26, 28 and tow member 14 could instead extend from the any portion of the container 122 that allowed the harness 120 to be donned by the user 24 and the wheeled luggage 78 to be towed.
