Definitions

  • the invention relates to an oil filter unit adapted to being placed in a oil container, comprising a filter housing with an inlet aperture, a filter and a plurality of outlet apertures distributed over an outside of the filter housing.
  • Such a filter unit is often used for servo control oil in trucks.
  • the filter unit acts as a diffuser which imparts a low flow velocity for the return flow into the oil container in order to vent the oil and reduce turbulence in the oil container.
  • the oil container is often of very small volume, resulting in a very high oil turnover rate (up to about 20 times per minute), which may lead to insufficient venting and cause disturbing noise.
  • An object of the invention is to propose a filter unit of the kind indicated in the introduction which avoids the problems indicated above by better flow in the oil container.
  • outlet apertures intended to be situated on a region of the outside which faces towards a suction port in the oil container are adapted to directing an oil flow out of the filter housing at least partly away from the suction port.
  • This configuration of the filter unit forces return oil flowing out from the filter unit close to the suction port to travel a greater distance to reach the suction port, with the result that this oil is also better vented before it leaves the oil container, while at the same time the accumulated return oil flow can have a more uniform velocity profile in the oil container.
  • outlet apertures in the region which faces towards the suction port may be angled away from perpendicular to the outside. In particular, they may be directed substantially parallel with or tangentially to the outside.
  • the outlet apertures may be shaped like gills.
  • Such apertures are easy to create by the gill covers being bent out from, for example, stamped-out curved slits in a shell of the filter housing.
  • the filter housing may, by positive engagement by shape with the oil container, be adapted to being oriented with said region facing towards the suction port.
  • the positive engagement by shape comprises mutually cooperating recesses and protrusions.
  • the outlet apertures not situated on said region may in a conventional manner be adapted to directing the oil flow perpendicular to the outside of the filter housing.
  • FIG. 1 is a side view, partly in section with portions cut away, of a filter unit according to the state of the art in a oil container;
  • FIG. 2 is a schematic cross-sectional view of an oil container with a filter unit according to the invention
  • FIG. 3 is a side view of a cutaway portion of a filter housing of a filter unit according to the invention.
  • FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view along the line 4-4 in FIG. 3.
  • the known filter unit 10 depicted in FIG. 1 is adapted to being placed inside an oil container 40 in sealing engagement with an oil return port 42 at the bottom of the container 40.
  • the filter unit 10 comprises a filter housing 12 composed of a cylindrical shell 14 made of, for example, sheetmetal and a pair of enclosing endwalls 26, 28. Within the shell 14 there is a folded filter 34.
  • the filter 34 filters oil which enters from the return port 42 via an inlet aperture 30 in the lower endwall 28 and which, after passing through the filter 34, emerges from the unit 10 via outlet apertures 16 evenly distributed over the shell 14 (only a few are depicted in FIG. 1 ).
  • the filtered oil thereafter leaves the oil container 40 via a suction port 44 at the bottom of the oil container 40.
  • FIGS. 2-4 depict a filter unit 10 according to the invention.
  • the outlet apertures 18 on a region 24 of the outside of the shell 14 which faces towards the port 44 are so shaped that they direct an oil flow out from the filter unit 10 at least partly away from the suction port 44. This is illustrated schematically by flow arrows in FIG. 2.
  • the outlet apertures 18 are shaped like gills with D- shaped gill covers 22 bent out from correspondingly shaped slits 20 in the shell 14 of the filter housing 12.
  • the gill covers 22 which guide the oil flow out from the unit 10 may be bent out about 35 degrees from the shell 14. If the circular cylindrical shell
  • the remaining outlet apertures 16 in the shell 14, i.e. those facing away from the suction port 44, take the form of circular holes 16 in the shell 14, like the outlet apertures of the known filter unit 10 in FIG. 1.
  • the orientation of the filter unit 10 in the container 40 thus also causes these outlet apertures 16 to direct the oil flow at least partly away from the suction port 44.
  • the filter unit 10 is adapted to positive engagement by shape with the bottom of the container 40.
  • the filter unit may be of non-circular cross- section and fit in a corresponding non-circular socket
  • the embodiment depicted in FIG. 2 has the lower endwall 28 of the filter unit 10 provided with a recess 32 in which a spigot 46 protruding from the bottom of the oil container 40 engages.
  • the filter unit 10 is thus prevented from rotating about the return port 42 of the container 40.
  • the recess 32 and the spigot 46 are with advantage situated on the outside, i.e.
  • a similar spigot may be used when the filter is assembled in order to guide the filter away from the recess 32.
