Description
BALCONY DOOR OR WINDOW LEAF FRAME
The invention concerns a balcony door or window leaf frame made of hollow or solid profiles and equipped with a handle with a grip positioning mechanism inside the housing that is connected with the frame profile.
A number of constructions of leaf frames and handles for balcony doors and windows are known from industrial practice and literature.
Patent specifications EP.0913546 and EP 0668427 describe door or window leaf frames of hollow profiles with handles with a shape similar to an "L" and a grip positioning mechanism that is situated inside the grip shank, outside the leaf frame profile. The mechanism is protected with a ring-shaped element of the grip shank.
Handles for balcony doors and windows, as described for example in patent specifications PL.188568, DE.2208617, EP.0913546, specifications of Polish utility designs Ru.62177, Ru.59346, Ru.59125, Ru.57699, the Polish patent application P.328036 and applications of Polish utility designs W.113963, W. 113827, W. 111600, W. 110478, W. 110033, contain a handle with a shape similar to an "L", pivoted in a housing which as its ends has bores for connecting means, e.g. screws, serving to mount the handle on the surface of the profile of the leaf after the grip of the handle is connected with the leaf blocking mechanism inside the profile that blocks the leaf in the tilted or closed position, e.g. with the leaf lock.
Known handles are equipped with cover plates that cover the connecting means in the housing and are situated between the base of the grip and the top surface of the housing and are preferably pressed flexibly against the housing.
The cover plates of known handles have a profile that corresponds to the profile of the housing. It is usually a profile of a quadrilateral with rounded upper parts or a quadrilateral complemented on the opposite sides by sections of a circle.
The housings of known handles are equipped with a grip positioning mechanism that contains a revolving locking element and flexible fixing elements connected with it, e.g. locking tongues. The said locking element is connected with the shank of the grip and, according to some solutions, it has the shape of a ring or a disc with recesses on the perimeter, according to other solutions it is the part of
the shank of the grip that is situated inside the handle housing and has recesses on the perimeter or on the front.
Similarly, the flexible fixing elements are, according to some known solutions, locking tongues that are integral parts of the housing, or, according to other known solutions, they are separate parts, i.e. balls or leaf springs.
In addition, the shank of the grip of known handles has also a bore for the control rod or a control rod itself, usually with a square cross-section, that ensures a connection of the grip with the door or window leaf in the tilted or closed position.
A characteristic and common feature of all known solutions of handles for balcony doors and windows is the fact that the housings that contain the grip positioning mechanism, are fixed on the outside surface of the door leaf profiles.
Industrial practice in the scope of production of windows and doors shows that the housings of known balcony door and window handles are mounted on the outside surface of the fragment of the leaf profile where previously three mounting bores have been made - two bores on the extreme ends for the elements that join the housing with the locking mechanism of the leaf that is mounted inside the housing, and the third bore between the extreme bores that is used for the control rod of the leaf locking mechanism.
A common deficit of the above solutions it scratching or even destroying of the surface of the leaf profile by the moving housing in the situation when as a result of intensive utilization the connection between the housing and the leaf locking mechanism inside the profile becomes loose.
The purpose of the invention is to design such a connection between, the handle housing and the leaf frame profile of the balcony door or window, where the housing, equipped with a grip positioning mechanism inside is mounted inside the leaf frame profile and at the same time the leaf frame profile retains the known arrangement of the three bores for the assembly of a handle and provides the possibility to mount a handle with a known housing on the outside surface of the leaf frame without having to additionally process the leaf profile.
The solution of such a technical problem will allow not only to improve the aesthetic features of the balcony door or window, for example thanks to the possibility of applying cover plates in shapes deviating from the outline of the handle housing, but the principal advantage is an improvement in functional
features of balcony doors and windows with handles according to the invention by removing the known technical disadvantages of the present solutions. This will also facilitate cleaning and repairing of the outside protective layer of the leaf.
According to the invention, a balcony door and window leaf frame produced of profiles and equipped with a handle whose grip is pivoted in the housing that is connected with the frame profile and which has a grip positioning mechanism with a revolving locking element and with at least one fixing element, whereas the leaf frame profile has at the place of fixing two opposite bores for connecting means that connect the housing and the frame, and between them there is the third bore for the control rod that is connected with the handle grip and the leaf blocking mechanism- is characterized by the fact that the housing of the handle is placed inside the frame profile in a recess and the central section of the housing that contains the locking element has a dimension that is not bigger than the smallest of the dimensions of the known bore in the profile for the control rod.
In addition, in order to facilitate the shaping of the recess for the handle housing in the frame profile by the way of a process that is widely used in the production of windows and doors, e.g. with cutters, the transverse surface of the handle housing contains elements of cylindrical surfaces axis which are located in the same plane.
Preferably, both lateral sections of the housing that contain the bores for the assembly of connecting means and are adjacent to the said central section have a transverse outline whose opposite ends have oval shapes, preferably those of circular arcs.
In particular, the handle housing in a leaf frame of a balcony door or window is a solid whose transverse outline is a convex figure (defined according to the principles of geometry, i.e. a figure which contains all the line segments connecting any pair of its points). In particular transverse outline is a figure that contains a central section with a fixed dimension and two complementary, opposite sections of the first circles that contain bores for the connecting means.
In addition, according to the invention, the housing of the handle is a solid whose transverse outline is a non-convex figure (i.e. a figure which does not contain all the line segments connecting any pair of its points) consisting of a centrally situated circle with two quadrilaterals intersecting it and situated opposite
each other and their extreme sides are complemented with sections of the other circles with radii that are shorter than the radius of the central circle, or the housing is a solid whose transverse outline is a non-convex figure that contains three circles with equal or different parameters, two of them being opposite to each other and intersecting the third, centrally situated circle.
The axis of at least one bore, and preferably the axes of both the bores for the connecting means coincide with the centres of curvature of the circular arcs that outline the opposite ends of the housing.
Since the central part of the handle housing of a balcony door or window frame leaf around the locking element has a dimension that is not bigger than the diameter of the known bore in the profile that is used to mount the control rod, the technical problem is solved - the handle housing is placed inside the profile of the leaf frame, without having to change the size and the arrangement of the three assembly bores that are made in the known frame profile as typical bores for the installation of known handles, and the leaf frame can be equipped with the known handle without any further processing to the frame leaf that is connected with such a replacement.
The solution presented herein eliminates the inconveniences of the present solutions, i.e. the damage of the surface of the profile by the handle housing if the connection between the door housing and the mechanism for locking the leaf in the closed position becomes loose.
Since the housing is mounted in the frame profile there is no need to give the cover plate the shape of the outline of the housing which, for example, will enable an adaptation of the shape of the cover plate to the requirements of interior architects.
The process of connecting and mounting the handle according to the invention in the leaf frame profile is very simple and can be performed in the known way using the same connecting means that are used for known handles since it requires only to shape the recess for the housing of this section of the leaf frame in which the three assembly bores are made for the handle according to the present state of technology.
Since the central part of the handle housing according to the invention has a dimension that is no bigger than the diameter of the known bore in the profile that
is used to mount the control rod, the recess is narrower than the width of the housing of known handle types and, if it becomes necessary to replace the handle according to the invention with a typical handle, it will not require any additional processing of the leaf frame profile.
Six examples of the invention are shown in the attached figure, where:

FIG. 15- a cross section the handle housing, as shown in FIG 14.
According to the invention the leaf frame of a balcony door or window may be made of solid or hollow profiles 1.
In the detailed examples below it is assumed that the leaf frame is made of solid profiles 1 , e.g. wood.
In each example the leaf frame is equipped with a handle with a grip 2, pivoted in a housing 3 that is connected with the frame profile 1.
The handle housing 3 has a grip positioning mechanism 2 that contains a revolving locking element 4 and at least one flexibly mounted fixing element 5.
The profile 1 of the leaf frame has at the place where the handle housing 3 is mounted two known bores for connecting means 6 that connect the housing 3 and the frame, and between them there is the third known bore for the control rod 7 that is connected with the handle grip 2 and the mechanism blocking the leaf in the tilted or closed position 8.
The handle housing 3 is placed inside the frame profile 1 , e.g. in a recess and the central section of the housing 3 that contains the locking element 4 has a dimension "d" that is not bigger than, e.g., the diameter "D", which is the smallest dimension of the known bore for the control rod 7 in the profile 1. The transverse surface of the housing 3 contains elements of cylindrical surfaces axis which are located in the same plane, as shown in Fig.2, Fig.4, Fig.6, Fig.8, Fig.10, Fig.12 and Fig.14. In addition, both lateral sections of the housing 3, adjacent to its central section and having bores 9 for the connecting means 6 have a transverse outline whose opposite ends have oval shapes, preferably those of circular arcs.
It is clear the it will not have any impact on the nature of the invention if in some examples of the invention the handle housing is a solid whose transverse outline is a convex figure (according to the definition of this term in geometry), in particular a figure which contains the central section 10 with a fixed dimension and two complementary, opposite sections of the first circles 11 that contain bores 9 for connecting means 6, as shown in Fig.4.
In other examples of the invention the handle housing 3 can be a solid whose transverse outline is a non-convex figure that contains a centrally situated circle 12, complemented with two opposite quadrilaterals intersecting the circle and being opposite to each other, with their extreme sides being complemented by sections of the other circles 13 with radii shorter than the radius of the central circle 12, as shown in Fig.2.
According to other versions of the invention the handle housing 3 may be a solid whose transverse outline is a non-convex figure with the circles with equal or different radii, the two extreme of them 14, 18, 19 being opposite to each other and intersecting the third, centrally situated circle 12, as shown in Fig.6, Fig.8, Fig.10, Fig.12 and Fig. 14.
In addition, in all examples of the invention the axes of the bores 9 for the connecting means 6 may coincide with the centres of curvature of the circular arcs that outline the opposite ends of the handle housing 3, or they may be eccentric against the centres of curvature of said circular arcs.
In each of the examples the handle of the balcony door or window frame leaf has a grip 2, preferably with a shape similar to an "L", and a housing 3 and a cover plate 15, mounted between the housing 3 and the shank 16 of the grip 2. The cover plate 15 is preferably pressed flexibly to the upper surface of the housing 3.
In the seven detailed examples of the invention contained herein, from the bottom surface of the housing 3 depart bushes 17 that extend the said bores 9 for the connecting means 6.
However, it is clear and evident that in other examples of the invention the housing 3 does not need to be equipped with the said bushes 17, since it does not change the nature of the solution.
Between the said bores 9 for the connecting means 6 there is the central bore (in the drawing it is obscured by the revolving locking element 4), in which the end of the shank 16 of the grip 2 is pivoted.
Inside the housing 3 there is a locking mechanism that positions the grip 2. In the presented detailed examples of the invention this mechanism contains a revolving locking element 4 in the form a round disc with recesses on the perimeter which interact with two fixing elements 5 in the form of flexible lips that are integral elements of the ribbing of the housing 3. It is clear and evident that it will not have any impact on the nature of the solution if in other examples of the invention the revolving locking element 4 has other shapes, for example of a disc connected with the shank 16 of the grip 2 with bores or recesses distributed in equal angular distances on the disc's front surface, or the shape of a ring connected with the shank 16 of the grip 2, with kerfs on the perimeter, or even the shape of the shank 16 itself whose cylindrical end will be equipped with kerfs or grooves on the
perimeter. Similarly, the nature of the invention will not change, if the elastic fixing elements 5, interacting with the revolving locking element 4, are parts separated from the handle housing, such as leaf springs mounted in the housing 3 or balls supported by coil springs.
The revolving locking element 4 can have a quadrilateral bore as in the presented examples, in which the control rod 7 is placed which is connected at one end with the shank 16 of the grip 2, and at the other and - with the leaf blocking mechanism 8.
In the first example of the invention (Fig.2 and Fig.3) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse profile is a non-convex geometrical figure, consisting of a centrally situated circle 12 with two quadrilaterals intersecting it and situated opposite each other. Their extreme sides are complemented with sections of the other circles 13 with equal radii that are shorter than the radius of the central circle 12.
The axes of the bores 9 for the connecting means 6 coincide with the centres of curvature of the circular arcs 13 that outline the opposite ends of the housing 3.
In the second example of the invention (Fig.4 and Fig.5) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse shape is a non- convex geometrical figure that contains a central section 10 with a fixed dimension and two complementary opposite sections of the first circles 11.
The axes of the bores 9 for the connecting means 6 coincide with the centres of curvature of the arcs of the first circles 11 whose sections outline the opposite ends of the housing 3.
In the third example of the invention (Fig.6 and Fig.7) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse shape is a non- convex geometrical figure consisting of three circles with equal radii, whereas the two extreme circles 14 are opposite to each other and intersect the third, centrally situated circle 12.
The axes of the bores 9 for the connecting means 6 coincide with the centres of curvature of the arcs of the extreme circles 14 that outline the opposite ends of the housing 3.
In the fourth example of the invention (Fig.8 and Fig.9) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse shape is a non- convex geometrical figure consisting of three circles with different radii, whereas the two extreme circles 14 are opposite to each other and intersect the third, centrally situated circle 12.
The extreme circles 14 that outline the opposite ends of the housing 3 have equal radii that are shorter than the radius of the third, central circle 12. The axes of the bores 9 for the connecting means 6 are situated off the centres of curvature of the extreme circles 14 that outline the opposite ends of the housing 3.
In the fifth example of the invention (Fig.10 and Fig.11 ) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse shape is a non- convex geometrical figure consisting of three circles with different radii, whereas the two extreme circles 14 are opposite to each other and intersect the third, centrally situated circle 12.
The extreme circles 14 that outline the opposite ends of the housing 3 have equal radii that are longer than the radius of the third, central circle 12. The axes of the bores 9 for the connecting means 6 are situated off the centres of curvature of the extreme circles 14 that outline the opposite ends of the housing 3.
In the sixth example of the invention (Fig.12 and Fig.13) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse shape is a non- convex geometrical figure consisting of three circles with different radii, whereas the two extreme circles 18 and 19 are opposite to each other and intersect the third, centrally situated circle 12.
The first extreme circle 18 that outlines one end of the housing 3 and the central circle 12 have equal radii that are shorter than the radius of the other extreme circle 19 that outlines the other end of the housing 3. The axis of the bore 9 for the connecting means 6 in the smaller extreme circle 18 coincides with the centre of curvature of this circle 18, and the bore 9 for the connecting means 6 in the bigger extreme circle 19 is situated off the centre of curvature of the arc of the bigger circle 19.
In the seventh example of the invention (Fig.14 and Fig.15) the handle housing 3 of the balcony door or window leaf is a solid whose transverse shape is a non-convex geometrical figure consisting of three circles with equal radii,
whereas the two extreme circles 18 and 19 are opposite to each other and intersect the third, centrally situated circle 12.
The first extreme circle 19 that outlines one end of the housing 3 and the central circle 12 have equal radii that are longer than the radius of the other extreme circle 18 that outlines the other end of the housing 3. The axis of the bore 9 for the connecting means 6 in the bigger extreme circle 19 coincides with the centre of curvature of this circle 19, and the axis of the bore 9 for the connecting means 6 in the smaller extreme circle 18 is situated off the centre of curvature of the arc of the bigger circle 18.
It is understandable and evident for an expert that the schematic examples of the transverse shapes of the handle housing 3 of a frame leaf outlined above can, without any impact on the nature of the invention, be in practice supplemented with additional elements, such as oval shapes, convergences and technological radii, which mainly depends on the technology of production of the housing and the material used, e.g. metal or plastic.
It is clear and evident that the above examples are supposed only to illustrate some of the basic features of the invention and thus, they cannot be deemed as limiting the nature of the invention.
