Abstract
A rotation detection sensor includes: two rotation detection units (1) which output pulse-shaped rotation detection signals S1 and S2, respectively, in accordance with rotation of a rotary body (30); a rotation direction detection unit (4) which detects the rotation direction of the rotary body (30) according to the 2-phase rotation detection signals S1, S2 which are outputted from the rotation detection units (1); a failure detection unit (6) which judges whether the rotation detection units (1) have failed; and a signal processing unit (8). When the rotation detection units (1) are normal, the signal processing unit (8) generates and outputs pulse-shaped first output signal and second output signal indicating the rotation direction and the rpm of the rotary body (30). When one of the rotation detection units (1) has failed, the signal processing unit (8) generates and outputs a third output signal having a pulse shape different from that of the first output signal and the second output signal and indicating the failure state and the rpm of the rotary body (30). Thus, the sensor itself can detect and output a sensor failure without depending on the rpm of the rotary body.
