Abstract

 非磁性基板上に、裏打ち層と下地層と中間層と少なくとも1層の垂直磁気記録層を有する垂直磁気記録媒体であって、前記垂直磁気記録層はCo及びCrを含み、その少なくとも1層が、強磁性の結晶粒と非磁性である酸化物の結晶粒界とから構成されるグラニュラ構造をとり、該結晶粒界を構成する酸化物がW酸化物を含む。他の態様としては、前記垂直磁気記録層を、W酸化物を結晶粒界とする磁気記録層と、その上に形成されたCr酸化物、Si酸化物、Ta酸化物またはTi酸化物を結晶粒界とする磁気記録層を有する複数層のグラニュラ構造を有するものとする。この磁気記録媒体は、垂直磁性層の垂直配向性に優れ、かつ強磁性結晶粒の平均粒径が極めて微細であるという特性を有し、高記録密度特性に優る。
