Abstract

A polarizing plate in which at least a first protective film, a polarizing film, a second protective film made of a thermoplastic polymer containing a cycloolefin resin, a phase difference layer in which the orientation of rod-like liquid crystal substantially vertically oriented to the surface of the second protective film is fixed are arranged in this order. The polarizing plate is characterized in that the Ro and Rt of the second protective film and those of the phase difference layer at a temperature of 23°C in an environment of 55% RH in the case of the wavelength of 590 nm are so specified that the second protective film has Ro = 30 to 115 nm; Rt = 100 to 250 nm; and Rt/Ro = 1.6 to 4.4 and the phase difference layer has Ro = 0 to 10 nm; and Rt = -100 to -400 nm, and in that the wavelength dispersion characteristic expressed by formula 1 below of the multilayer structure of the second protective film and the phase difference layer is 2.0 to 6.5 nm. Formula 1: D(R40)=R40(630)-R40(480) (where R40 denotes the retardation value measured by inclining the sample by 40° around the rotation axis which is the slow axis parallel to the surface of the sample). ((630) and (480) are measured wavelengths (nm)).
