Abstract
垂直配向型の液晶層を備えた配向分割型液晶表示装置において、一方の基板に設けた配向規制構造だけで十分に安定な配向状態を実現し、さらに、黒表示時の光漏れの発生を抑制する。 本発明による液晶表示装置は、第1基板の液晶層側に設けられた第1電極と、第2基板に設けられ第1電極に液晶層を介して対向する第2電極とによってそれぞれが規定される複数の絵素領域を有する。各絵素領域において、第1電極と第2電極との間に電圧が印加されたときに、液晶分子の傾斜する方位が互いに異なる複数の領域が形成される。第1電極は、下層導電層と、下層導電層の少なくとも一部を覆う誘電体層と、誘電体層の液晶層側に設けられた上層導電層とを有する。上層導電層は、開口部またはスリットを有し、下層導電層は、上層導電層の開口部またはスリットに対向するように設けられている。第1電極と第2電極との間に電圧が印加されたときに、下層導電層の電位V0と上層導電層の電位V1とが所定の関係を有し、それによって、液晶層に、開口部またはスリットに対応した領域内において等電位線が第2基板側に上がるような電界が生成される。
