Abstract

There is provided a wheel rim coupling for a tyre side wall protector comprising at least two coupling elements which each comprise an engaging portion for engaging at least a portion of a wheel rim. The wheel rim coupling further comprises a fastening system for fastening the at least two coupling elements together when engaged with the wheel rim. The wheel rim coupling is further configured so that it may be releasably attachable to a tyre side wall protector.

Description

A TYRE SIPEWALL PROTECTOR
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a tyre side wall protector and to a wheel rim coupling for a tyre side wall protector.
Background of the Invention
Mining sites typically operate large numbers of heavy vehicles used to collect and transport mineral from within underground locations to above ground collection points for transporting to stock piles or similar repositories. Due to the hazardous operating environment tyres often sustain regular damage as a result of impact from rock walls when traveling through narrow passageways. Such damage can significantly reduce the operating life of the tyres while increasing the safety risk to workers and replacement cost to operators .
It is to be understood that, if any prior art publication (s) or use(s) are referred to herein, such references do not constitute an admission that the publication (s) or , use(s) forms a part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country.
Summary of the Invention
In the claims which follow and in the foregoing description of the invention, except where the context requires otherwise due to express language or necessary implication, the word "comprise" or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising" is used in an inclusive sense, i.e. to specify the presence of the stated features but not to preclude the presence or addition of further features in various embodiments of the invention.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a wheel rim coupling for a tyre side wall protector, said wheel rim coupling comprising: at least two coupling elements, each coupling element having an engaging portion for engaging at least a portion of a wheel rim; and, a fastening system for fastening said at least two elements together when said at least two coupling elements are engaged with said wheel rim; said wheel rim coupling configured to be releasably attachable to at least one shield portion arranged when attached to the wheel rim coupling to protect a tyre side wall.
In one embodiment the at least two elements may be configured so as to be movable between an open and a closed condition.
In one embodiment each coupling element comprises at least two element portions . The at least two element portions may be configured to be movably connected to each other.
In one embodiment, said at least two element portions are rotatable relative to each other by a hinge or a pivot. In a further embodiment, the at least two element portions of each coupling element are configured so that the freedom of rotation between adjacent element portions is restricted when the element portions are assembled about the wheel rim.
In another embodiment the at least two element portions are configured to be rotatable relative to each other.
In a further embodiment, adjacent ends of two element portions comprise at least one chamfer to allow said element portions to rotate relative each other to the open condition.
In one embodiment the engaging portion comprises an inwardly extending annular lip.
In one embodiment, the fastening system comprises a translating link configured with a movable joint between the at least two elements portions for allowing adjacent element portions to rotate relative one another.
In a further embodiment, the fastening system comprises at least one flange portion extending substantially outwardly from a second surface of adjacent element portions so the adjacent element portions may be releasably fastened together.
In another embodiment, the or each flange portion comprises at least one aperture for receiving a fastener arranged to fasten said adjacent element portions together. The fastener may, for example, comprise a bolt and nut combination or similar. In a further embodiment, the fastening system may further comprise a protrusion extending from one of said adjacent element portions for engaging a complementary recess disposed on the other of the adjacent element portions.
In another embodiment, the fastening system may comprise a tongue and groove arrangement to allow the ends of the adjacent element portions to locate and engage one another.
In another embodiment, said engaging portion comprises a flange distal-most said first surface and configured to engage a complementary flange on the periphery of the wheel rim.
In a further embodiment, the or each coupling element, when in a closed condition, is substantially semi-circular. In this embodiment, the or each element portion may be substantially in the shape of a quarter-circle .
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a tyre side wall protector for protecting the side wall of a tyre, said apparatus comprising: a wheel rim coupling as hereinbefore described; and, at least one shield portion.
In a further embodiment, the or each element, or, the or each element portion, is configured with a second fastening system for fastening the at least one shield portion, or portion thereof, thereto. The second fastening system may comprise a plurality of apertures through which respective fasteners may register therethrough to engage respective apertures formed within the at least one shield portion of the tyre side wall protector.
In one embodiment the or each shield portion is configured to be releasably attachable to said wheel rim coupling. Alternatively, the or each shield portion may be formed integral with the wheel rim coupling.
In a further embodiment, the or each shield portion is configured to be releasably attachable to a respective element portion of the wheel rim coupling. Alternatively, the or each shield portion may be formed integral with each respective element potion of the wheel rim coupling.
In one embodiment the apparatus further comprises a skirt portion configured so as to be juxtaposed at least a portion of the peripheral edge of the shield portion and intermediate the side wall of the tyre.
According to a third aspect in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for protecting tyre side walls, said method comprising the steps of: forming a wheel rim coupling as hereinbefore described; assembling at least one coupling element of said wheel rim coupling to at least a portion of said wheel rim; assembling at least another coupling element of said wheel rim coupling to at least a further portion of said wheel rim; fastening said coupling elements together; and, attaching at least one shielding member, or portion thereof, to at least one of said coupling elements.
In one embodiment the method comprises the step of attaching at least one skirt portion as hereinbefore described to be juxtaposed the peripheral edge of at least a portion of the or each shielding member so as to be intermediate the tyre and said shielding member.
According to any of the embodiments of the present invention described herein, the engaging portion of the wheel rim coupling may be configured to engage the periphery of the wheel rim.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments of the Invention
Figures 1 and 2 show one embodiment of a tyre protector which includes a wheel rim coupling (hereinafter λthe coupling') 2 and a shield portion 4. The coupling 2 is attachable to a vehicle wheel rim and is configured such that the shield portion 4 may be connected to the coupling 2 so as to protect the sidewall of a tyre 5 (shown in Figures 9 and 10) during use .
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 10, the coupling 2 comprises coupling elements 8a and 8b. Each of the coupling elements 8a and 8b is includes an engaging portion 10 for engaging the wheel rim 6. The coupling 2 further comprises a fastening system 12a, 12b for coupling or fastening the coupling elements 8a and 8b together when assembled about wheel rim 6 or the periphery thereof .
With reference to Figure 2, coupling elements 8a and 8b each comprise at least two element portions 14a, 14b and 14c, 14d respectively. With reference to coupling element 8a, element portions 14a and 14b are configured with a coupling system 16a so as to be coupled at adjacent ends of element portions 14a and 14b in such a manner that allows element portions 14a and 14b to be rotatably connected to each other. The coupling system 16a allows element portions 14a and 14b to be movable between an open condition in the direction indicated by arrows 18a and 18b ("18") as shown in Figure 3, and a closed condition as shown in Figure 4. Movement in direction 18 by element portions 14a and 14b is permitted by providing at least a portion of one of the ends of portions 14a or 14b with a chamfer 20. It will be appreciated that both ends of the element portions 14a and 14b may be chamfered.
During assembly of the coupling element 8a (and similarly for coupling element 8b) about wheel rim 6, element portions 14a and 14b are rotated into substantially the open condition and subsequently into the closed condition when manipulated into position about wheel rim 6. In one embodiment, the coupling element 8a, and constituent element portions 14a, 14b are configured so as to substantially form the shape of a semicircle to assemble snugly against one half of wheel rim 6. It will be appreciated that coupling element 8b, and constituent element portions 14c, 14d may be operable in a similar way as previously described for coupling element 8a using coupling system 16b so as to be appropriately manipulated to fit substantially the remaining portion of the wheel rim 6.
The coupling 2 comprises engaging portions 10a, 10b, 10c, and 1Od configured for engaging the wheel rim 6, in this example by providing each of the engaging portions with an annular lip 28a, 28b for engaging the wheel rim 6.
As shown more particularly in Figure 4, each engaging portion 10a, 10b (λ10') comprises an upright portion 26a, 26b (λ26') extending substantially outwardly from first surfaces 22a, 22b (V22') of respective constituent element portions 14a, 14b.
The annular lips 28a, 28b are configured to engage a complementary flange 30 disposed at the periphery of a wheel rim 6 as shown in Figures 9 and 10. The lips 28a, 28b of the engaging portion 10 may also be configured to appropriately fit within the region of space 32 between flange 30 and a locking ring 34 of the wheel rim 6. The first surface 22 of each respective element portions 14 may be configured so that it sits substantially flush against the distalmost end 50 of the locking ring 34 of the wheel rim 6.
It will be appreciated that the first surface 22 may be configured with a complimentary recess (not shown) into which the distalmost end 50 may fit. Furthermore, it will be appreciated that the engaging portions 10 may be formed on only one of the two element portions 14, or portions thereof.
The coupling elements 8a, 8b are fastened together with the fastening system 12a and 12b with each disposed at respective ends of a coupling element 8a, 8b. With reference to Figure 5, fastening system 12a comprises upstanding portions 36a and 36b.
Each of the upright portions 36 includes at least one aperture for receiving a fastener such as. In a further embodiment, at least one spacer 40 may be disposed intermediate upstanding portions 36 and fasteners placed therethrough. It will be appreciated by any skilled in the art that other ways or methods may be used for fastening systems 12 for fastening coupling elements 8a and 8b together.
Either of the fastening systems 12 may further comprise a protrusion formed within either of the adjacent ends of the coupling elements 8a, 8b, and a complimentary recess formed within the alternate end so that the ends may engage when fastening coupling elements 8a, 8b together. For example, the end of element portion 14a may be formed with a protrusion that engages a complimentary recess formed within the adjacent end of element portion 14c so as both ends may engage when element portions 14a and 14c are fastened together. It will be appreciated that such interlocking techniques may be achieved in any number of ways known in the art .
With reference to Figures 6, 7 and 8, the tyre sidewall protector 1 may be configured with a further fastening system 24 for fastening the shield portion 4 to the coupling 2 to protect the side wall of a tyre. In the current embodiment, any of the element portions 14 may be configured with any number of apertures that are registrable with complementary apertures formed on the shield portion 4. For the embodiment shown, a set of four apertures 52 are formed within each of the element portions 14a, 14b, 14c and 14d and configured to be registrable with four equally spaced sets of apertures 54 formed within the shield portion 4 as shown in Figure 6. For the embodiment shown, fastening plates 42 are configured to each be registrable with the appertures 54 formed in the shield portion 4 and those formed in the respective element portions 14. It will be appreciated that any mechanical fastening system may be used to couple the shield portion 4 to the coupling 2. The fastening plates 42 may comprise, for example, threaded bolts 60 which engage respective retaining nuts that are manipulated to tighten against respective washer plates 44 placed adjacent and register with apertures 52 on each respective element portion 14.
In another embodiment, like element portions may be connected by a joint that provides for a degree of translation and/or rotation between adjacent element portions 14. In this embodiment, each adjacent end of respective element portions 14 may be connected by a link member (not shown) having a first and second end that join respective adjacent element portions 14 together. Each end of the link engages with, and is movable with respect to, a respective end of an adjacent pair of element portions 14. The link may be configured to move in such a way so as to allow each adjacent element portion 14 to move away (either by relative translation or rotation) from each other so as to allow the coupling 2 to adopt an open condition for assembly. In this embodiment, the first and/or second ends of the link may be configured to move within a recess or aperture formed within respective ends of the adjacent element portions. The link may be configured with a clamping system so that the relative movement of respective adjacent element portions 14 may be restricted and securable when in a closed condition about the wheel rim 6.
The shield portion 4 may comprise a moulded member formed from any hard-wearing or resilient material such as, for example, polyethylene or a suitable, easily moulded and sufficiently strong composite material. In one embodiment, the shield portion 4 may be regarded as a sacrificial component that is replaceable . The shield portion 4 may be configured with at least one cutaway portion 48 so as to facilitate inspection of the tyre without needing to remove the shield portion 4. Further, the shield portion 4 may be integrally moulded as a single piece structure or may comprise of multiple portions that may be engageable with each other and couple to respective element portions 14 separately.
In another embodiment, the tyre side wall protector 1 may comprise a shield portion 4 comprised of a plurality of shield portion elements, each of which is formed integral with a respective coupling element 8a, 8b. For example, in one embodiment, the shield portion 4 may be comprised of two halves that are each formed integral with a respective coupling element 8a, 8b. In another example, the shield portion 4 may comprise 4 quarter portions that are each formed integral with a respective element portion 14a, 14b, 14c, 14d. Alternatively, each constituent shield portion may be configured to be releasably attached to a respective coupling element 8, or respective element portion 14, using any fastening system known in the art .
With reference to figure 10, in a further embodiment, there may be provided at least one skirt portion 70 configured to be disposed intermediate the actual periphery of the shield portion 4 and the tyre. The skirt portion 70 may comprise any resilient material such as, for example, rubber, and be of sufficient strength to resist the ingression of rock or similar debris becoming lodged intermediate the shield portion 4 and side wall of the tyre. In the simplest form, the skirt portion 70 may comprise a closed section (of constant section) of material having a slit formed along the length of the said section. The section is then applied to the periphery of the shield portion by placing the peripheral edge of the shield portion 4 within the formed slit. The skirt portion 70 may comprise one section appropriately formed with a slit or comprise a plurality of like formed sections. In another embodiment, the skirt portion 70 may be moulded in one or multiple pieces and applied to the peripheral edge of the of the shield portion 4 as previously described or by using any known coupling or mechanical fastening systems known in the art.
Numerous variations and modifications will suggest themselves to persons skilled in the relevant art, in addition to those already described, without departing from the basic inventive concepts. All such variations and modifications are to be considered within the scope of the present invention, the nature of which is to be determined from the foregoing description.

Claims

1. A wheel rim coupling for a tyre side wall protector, said wheel rim coupling comprising: at least two coupling elements, each coupling element having an engaging portion for engaging at least a portion of a wheel rim; and, a fastening system for fastening said at least two elements together when said at least two coupling elements are engaged with said wheel rim; said wheel rim coupling is configured to be releasably attachable to a shield portion arranged when attached to the wheel rim coupling to protect a tyre side wall-,
2. A wheel rim coupling according to claim 1 wherein the at least two elements are configured so as to be movable between an open and a closed condition.
3. A wheel rim coupling according to claims 1 or 2 wherein each coupling element comprises at least two element portions; said at least two element portions are configured to be movably connected to each other.
4. A wheel rim coupling according to claim 3 wherein said at least two element portions are configured to be rotatable relative to each other.
5. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 3 or
4 wherein said at least two element portions are rotatable relative to each other by a hinge or a pivot.
6. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 3 to 5 wherein the at least two element portions of each coupling element is configured so that the freedom of rotation between adjacent element portions is restricted when said element portions are assembled about said wheel rim.
7. A wheel rim coupling according to claim 6 wherein adjacent ends of adjacent element portions comprise at least one chamfer to allow said adjacent element portions to rotate relative to each other to said open condition.
8. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 3 to
7 wherein the engaging portion comprises an inwardly extending annular lip.
9. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 3 to
8 wherein the fastening system comprises a link configured with a movable joint between said at least two elements portions for allowing adjacent element portions to translate and/or rotate relative one another.
10. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 3 to
9 wherein the fastening system may comprise at least one flange portion extending substantially outwardly from a second surface of adjacent element portions so the adjacent element portions may be releasably fastened together.
11. A wheel rim coupling according to claim 10 wherein the or each flange portion comprises at least one aperture for receiving a fastener arranged to fasten said adjacent element portions together.
12. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 3 to 11 wherein the fastening system further comprises a protrusion extending from one of said adjacent element portions for engaging a complementary recess disposed on the other of the adjacent element portions.
13. A wheel rim coupling according to claim 12 wherein the fastening system may comprise a tongue and groove arrangement to allow the ends of the adjacent element portions to locate and engage one another .
14. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 1 to
13 engaging portion comprises a flange distal-most said first surface and configured to engage a complementary flange on the periphery of said wheel rim.
15. A wheel rim coupling according to any one of claims 1 to
14 wherein the or each coupling element, when in said closed condition, is substantially semi-circular.
16. A tyre sidewall protector for protecting the side wall of a tyre, said apparatus comprising: a wheel rim coupling as hereinbefore described; and, at least one shield portion.
17. A tyre sidewall protector according to claim 16 wherein the or each coupling element, or, the or each element portion, is configured with a second fastening system for fastening a shield portion, or portion thereof, thereto comprising a plurality of apertures through which respective fasteners may register therethrough to engage respective apertures formed within said shield portion of tyre side wall protector.
18. A tyre sidewall protector according to any one of claims 16 or 17 wherein the or each shield portion is configured to be releasably attachable to said wheel rim coupling.
19. A tyre sidewall protector according to any one of claims 16 to 18 wherein the or each shield portion is configured to be releasably attachable to a respective element portion of the wheel rim coupling.
20. A tyre sidewall protector according to claim 16 wherein the or each shield portion may be formed integral with each respective element potion of the wheel rim coupling.
21. A tyre sidewall protector according to any one of claims 16 to 20 wherein the apparatus further comprises a skirt portion configured so as to be juxtaposed at least a portion of the peripheral edge of the shielding portion and intermediate the side wall of the tyre.
22. A wheel rim coupling according to claims 1 to 15, or, a tyre sidewall protector according to claims 16 to 21, wherein the engaging portion of the wheel rim coupling is configured to engage the periphery of said wheel rim.
23. A method for protecting tyre side walls, said method comprising the steps of : forming a wheel rim coupling as hereinbefore described; assembling at least one coupling element of said wheel rim coupling to at least a portion of said wheel rim; assembling at least another coupling element of said wheel rim coupling to at least a further portion of said wheel rim; fastening said coupling elements together; and, attaching at least one shielding member, or portion thereof, to at least one of said coupling elements.
24. A wheel rim coupling according to claim 23 wherein the method comprises the step of attaching at least one skirt portion as hereinbefore described to be juxtaposed the peripheral edge of at least a portion of the or each shielding member so as to be intermediate the tyre and said shielding member .
25. A wheel rim coupling as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying Figures .
26. A tyre sidewall protector as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying Figures .
27. A method for protecting tyre side walls as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying Figures .
