Abstract
In a permanently excited synchronous machine (1) with a stator (2) which surrounds a rotor (4), which has permanent-magnet rotor material, so as to form an air gap (3), a number of permanent magnets (6) which can be magnetized and demagnetized by means of a field-forming longitudinal current (id) are arranged in a recessed fashion in the rotor (4) or in the rotor material (4'). During operation of the synchronous machine (1), the longitudinal current (id) is impressed on the stator winding in at least two stages in order to set the magnetization state of the rotor-end permanent magnets (6), with the permanent magnets (6) being at least approximately fully magnetized in a first stage, and with the permanent magnets (6) being demagnetized or unmagnetized in a second stage.
