Description

RETAINER
TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention relates to a retainer according to the preamble of the attached claim 1.
BACKGROUND
In a known such retainer, each retainer part comprises a steel plate bent round a rubber lining which has recesses for lines. That retainer also needs a steel sheath as a stop between the retainer parts to prevent the retainer parts from becoming deformed by large tightening torques. The steel sheath occupies space, with the result that the retainer needs unnecessarily large dimensions unless the fastening element/screw is under-dimensioned. The fact that the retainer comprises at least five parts makes it expensive to manufacture. It is also relatively heavy. A further disadvantage of such a retainer is that the upper retainer part risks being rotated during the tightening of the fastening element, with the result that the lines may become damaged, particularly if they are made of plastic, as in the case of, for example, fuel lines made of polyamide.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An object of the invention is to provide a retainer of the kind mentioned in the introduction whereby the disadvantages of the state of the art indicated above can be avoided.
This is achieved by the features indicated in the attached claims.
According to the invention, the retainer parts comprise mutually engaging, complementarily profiled surface portions between the recesses to prevent mutual rotation of the retainer parts when they are being clamped together. The fact that the retainer parts are of mutually identical cross-sectional shape makes it possible, with advantage, for them to be manufactured in the same moulding tool, e.g. by an extrusion process, thereby lowering the production cost.
With advantage, the profile height of the profiled surface portions will then be such that the retainer cannot clamp the lines when one of the retainer parts is rotated 180 degrees about said axis from a correct fitting position relative to the other retainer part.
With advantage, the surface portions slope relative to a centreline of the aperture, which slope makes it easier for the retainer parts to be put together in a correct assembly position.
Other features and advantages of the invention are indicated by the following detailed description and claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
FIG. 1 is a perspective view with cut-away portions of a retainer according to the invention firmly holding a pair of pipelines close to a mounting surface; FIG. 2 is an end view of a retainer according to FIG. 1 ;
FIG. 3 is an end view of a retainer part according to the invention;
FIG. 4 is a view obliquely from above the retainer part in FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a view corresponding to FIG. 4 with a modified retainer part according to the invention; and FIG. 6 is a view showing the retainer part in a pre-assembly position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT
FIG. 1 depicts a retainer 10 according to the invention firmly holding a pair of pipelines 40, 40, such as fuel lines, close to a mounting surface 52 of a schematically represented engine part 50 of an undepicted motor vehicle. The retainer 10 comprises two retainer parts 12, 12/12' of mutually identical cross- sectional shape. The retainer parts 12, 12' may therefore be produced using a single moulding tool, e.g. by aluminium extrusion. The retainer parts 12, 12' are gently rounded outside and each have inside a pair of recesses 14, 16 arranged at mutual spacing (FIGS. 3 and 4) to accommodate the pipelines 40. Between the recesses 14, 16, each retainer part 12, 12' has running through it a hole 18 for a fastening element such as a screw 30 for clamping the retainer parts together round the pipelines 40.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 1-4, the two retainer parts 12, 12 fully correspond to one another to allow the retainer 10 to be fastened by the threaded portion 32 of the screw 30 in a threaded hole 54 in the mounting surface 52. In the embodiment according to FIGS. 5 and 6, however, the hole 18 in the lower retainer part 12' is also provided with an internal thread 22 to make it possible for the retainer parts to be held together solely by a screw 30 with a shorter threaded portion 32'. With a retainer assembled in this manner, the two lines will stiffen one another in the resulting twin line (not depicted).
According to the invention, each retainer part 12, 12' between the recesses 14, 16 has profiled surface portions 24, 26, 28 which are mutually complementary between the retainer parts 12, 12/12' so that they will abut against one another in the assembled state of the retainer. More specifically, a central surface portion 28 of the surface portions 24, 26, 28 constitutes a locking surface which prevents mutual rotation between the retainer parts 12 and 12/12' in the correctly assembled state according to FIGS. 1 and 2.
The central surface portion 28 slopes at an angle v with respect to a centreline 20 of the hole 18 to make it easier to put the retainer parts together in the correct assembly position. If the retainer parts before assembly are turned at an angle to one another, e.g. 180 degrees, away from the correct position, they will abut on one another via the surface portions 24. The retainer 10 will then be too high - the height h means the height of the surface 28 - and will not be able to clamp the lines, a fact which a fitter will immediately sense with the fingers even if the retainer is hidden from view. In that situation the fitter will rotate the upper retainer part 12 in either direction about the screw 30 until the contact between the surfaces 24, 24 ceases and the surfaces 28, 28 begin to come into contact with one another at approximately the position according to FIG. 6 so that the retainer parts 12, 12/12' slide together along the surfaces 28, 28, which will guide the retainer parts to, and lock them in, the correct assembly position when the screw 30 is finally tightened.
In the configuration depicted in FIG. 3, with an angle v of about 15 degrees, a height h of about 4 mm and a length of the clamp 10 of about 18 mm, the retainer parts will slide together at a rotational angle of approximately 10 degrees from the correct assembly position.
The description set out above is primarily intended to make the invention easier to understand and no limitations of the invention are to be inferred therefrom. The modifications which will be obvious to a specialist examining the description may be implemented without deviating from the concept of the invention or the scope of the claims set out below. In the example described, the lines take the form of fuel lines, but the invention may be applied with advantage to all types of lines, e.g. other kinds of pipelines, and to electrical lines.
The example described refers to two lines but the invention may also be applied where a different number of lines are to be fastened, and the two lines indicated are mainly intended to be regarded as a suitable minimum number of lines.
