Description

SYSTEMANDMETHOD FORSETTLINGACCOUNTSUSINGTHE PAYMENT TERMINAL COMMUNICATING WITH A MOBILE TERMINAL BY RADIO FREQUENCY
TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relation relates to a settlement system and method using a settlement terminal installed in each franchise, and more particularly to a settlement system and method using a settlementterminalperforminglocal area radiocommunicationwith a mobile communication terminal performing settlement through local area communication.
BACKGROUND ART
In general, when a charge is paid in a store, a restaurant or the like, settlement by not only cash but also a credit card has been generally conducted. As a settlementmethodbythe credit card, settlement is conducted by reading the credit card through a reader of a settlement terminal, which is installedin a franchise and connected to a card company through a wired network.
On the other hand, recently, in addition to the settlement method using the credit card, mobile telephone settlement methods using non-contact RF (radio frequency) access devices have been proposed and put to practice use. In addition, a non-contact settlement method using a credit card containing a RF module has been proposed. In the non-contact settlement method using the credit card, settlement is achieved if only the credit card is brought near a card reader. For this non-contact settlement method, some communication companies have employed an infrared scan system for credit card settlement. However, an RF system has been used only for a prepaid traffic card and the like, which are mainly used for micro payment, and has not been introduced to a credit card because of problems related to security.
The non-contact settlement method has an advantage of convenience over a contact settlement method. That is, in this non-contact settlement method, a card bearer need not sign for settlement and settlement is achieved if only a card grazes a terminal lightly without being presented to a salesman. In addition, this non-contact settlement method may be configured tobeusedtogetherwithanexistingcontactterminal. Inaddition, when the non-contact card settlement method is introduced, not only a general rectangular card but also cards of modified shape such as a wristwatch-like card may be used. In addition, such cards may be basically loaded in a mobile telephone, thereby providing a card user with a convenience for the carrying of card. Hereinafter, a settlement system using the above-described conventional non-contact method will be described with reference to Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of a settlement system using local area radio communication in the prior art. Referring to Fig. 1, in a conventional settlement system in a franchise and the like, a settlement terminal 130 installed in the franchise is connected to a VAN (value-added network) company 140, a card company 150 and so on like through a wired network, and settlement is conducted by input and transmitting settlement information through the settlement terminal 130. In addition, if settlement is to be conducted through a non-contact card or a mobile communication terminal, as described above, an auxiliary device, such as Dongle 120, making the settlement possible is additionally installed. More specifically, when a non-contact card 100 or a mobile communication terminal 110 containing an infrared communication module is put near the Dongle 120, it performs infrared communicationwiththe Dongle 120. Inthe infraredcommunication, authentication information (for example, personal information) for settlement and so on is transmitted from the non-contact card
100 or the mobile communication terminal 110 to the Dongle 120.
Here, the Dongle 120 refers to hardware allowing only an authorized user to copy or use specified software (particularly, high-priced software) . That is, the Dongle 120 may be called a hardware key, which is connectable to a parallel or serial port of a computer, for confirming whether or not a user is authorized and allowing an authorized user to access the computer before an application program is executed, and is a kind of a hardware-based illegal copy protection device that must be used together with a programtobe used in order to protect an illegal copy of software. The Dongle 120 is also called a hardlock, ahardware key, a keylock, a hardware lock or the like.
Ontheotherhand, theDongle 120 is connectedtothe settlement terminal 130 of the franchise, wired data transmission means (for example, RS232C) and so on for transmitting authentication information and so on for settlement, which is transmitted from the non-contact card 100 or the mobile communication terminal 110, to the settlement terminal 130.
At this time, a franchise salesman inputs settlement money of a customer through the settlement terminal 130 and transmits the settlement information to the VAN company 140.
Here, the VAN (value-added network) company may be a communication service provider different from common carrier and special categorycommunication service provider. TheVAN company 140 realizes aprofitbyprovidingcardapprovalandinquiryservice. That is, the VAN company 140 mediates between the card company 150 and the franchise 130 and receives a commission for the card company 150 in turn for aid to the card approval and inquiry. In addition, the VAN company 140 may be in charge of transfer account or settlement in on-line shopping malls as well as the credit card VAN business.
In the above-mentioned conventional settlement system in the franchise, information contained in the credit card is read and settlement money is input through the settlement terminal 130 installed in the franchise, and the settlement is conducted by transmittingthe input informationtothecardcompany, a financial institution and the like 150 the VAN company 140.
However, the conventional settlement system in the franchise has a disadvantage in that the settlement terminal 130 installed in the settlement system must be connected to a server of the VAN company 140 or the card company/financial institution 150 through wired communication means. Accordingly, there arises a problem in that the franchise must bear a basic charge or an access charge for connection through the communication means. In addition, the settlement terminal 130 installed in the franchise has a disadvantage of restriction on mobility due to the connection through the wired communication means. That is, there arises a problem in that a businessman who runs a franchise while moving cannot use the above-mentioned settlement system .
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a settlement system and method using a settlement terminal performing local area radio communication with a mobile communication terminal, which is capable of inputting settlement information using the settlement terminal and transmitting the inputted settlement information to a financial institution for settlement through the mobile communication terminal.
To achieve the above objects, according to an aspect, the present invention provides a settlement system using a settlement terminal performing local area radio communication with a mobile communication terminal. The settlement terminal includes local area radio communication means for performing local area radio communication with external devices, receives settlement information, and transmits the received settlement information to the external devices through the local area radio communication means. The mobile communication terminal includes local area radio communication means for performing local area radio communication with external devices, receives the settlement information from the settlement terminal through the local area radio communication, performs user authentication based on the receivedsettlement information, andthentransmitsthe settlement information and user authentication information to a mobile communication network. In addition, the settlement system includes a settlement server for receiving the settlement informationandtheuserauthenticationinformationfromthemobile communication terminal through the mobile communication network and performing a settlement process.
According to another aspect, the present invention provides a settlement method using a settlement terminal performing local area radio communication with a mobile communication terminal. The settlement method includes the steps of inputting settlement information through an input interface of the settlement terminal, transmitting the input settlement information to the mobile communication terminal of a user who wishes to settlemoneythrough local area radio communication means of the settlement terminal, performing user authentication in the mobile communication terminal that received the settlement information and then transmitting the settlement information to a settlement server through a mobile communication network, and receiving the settlement information in the settlement server from the mobile communication terminal and then performing settlement for the mobile communication terminal based on the received settlement information. In the conventional settlement method in a franchise, a settlement terminal installedbyanexistingVANcompanyormobile communication service provider is connected to an exclusive wired/wireless network for performing a settlement service. On the contrary, the present invention suggests a settlement system and method for transmitting settlement information, which is input from a settlement terminal using wireless communication (RF/IrDA) , to a mobile communication terminal of purchaser, and transmitting the settlement information to a financial institution for settlement through the mobile communication terminal of the purchaser.
Accordingly, while a franchise must bear a basic charge or an access charge for connection since an existing credit card inquiry machine used by the franchise is connected to a wired or wireless communication network, the present invention provides a benefit of no burden of communication fees to the franchise. In addition, in the settlement system of the present invention, since the settlement terminal installed in the franchise is not directly connected to the VAN company or the financial institution through wired/wireless communication means, it is possible to move the settlement terminal.

Referring to Fig. 2, a settlement system according to the present invention does not transmit settlement information from a settlement terminal 200 of a franchise to a financial institution 240 as in the prior art, but transmits the settlement information from a mobile communication terminal 210 of a user to the financial institution 240.
More specifically, when the settlement information is first input to the settlement terminal 200 of the franchise, the settlementterminal200 communicateswiththemobile communication terminal 210 near the terminal 200 through local area radio communication. The mobile communication terminal 210 receives the settlement information from the settlement terminal 200 of the franchise andtransmits the settlement information, alongwith user information, to the financial institution 240 performing settlement after confirming the settlement information. At this time, before being transmitted to financial institution 240, the settlement information and the user information transmitted from the mobile communication terminal 210 are first transmitted to a settlement service provider 230 through a mobile communication network 220. Then, the settlement service provider 230 transmits the settlement information to the financial institution 240 for settlement according to a settlement mode selected by the mobile communication terminal 210.
That is, while means for transmitting the settlement information to the financial institution for settlement was the settlement terminal (130 in Fig. 1) installed in the franchise, the mobile communication terminal 210 of the user who wishes to settle money is used as settlement information transmission means in the settlement system according the present invention.
Onthe otherhand, since the settlement terminal 200 according to the present invention for transmitting the settlement information to the mobile communication terminal 210 doest not directly transmit the settlement information to the financial institution 240, it need not be connected to any communication network. However, sincethe settlementterminal 200musttransmit the settlement information through the mobile communication terminal 210 of the user who wishes to settle money, it must communicate with the mobile communication terminal 210.
Accordingly, for implementation of the present invention, it is required that the settlement terminal 200 and the mobile communicationterminal210includealocalarearadiocommunication module allowing local area radio communication between the settlement terminal 200 andthemobile communication terminal 210. Forexample, aRFcommunicationmethodoraninfraredcommunication methodmaybe used as local area communicationmeans. On the other hand, it is preferable to contain a smart card for settlement and a secret communicationmodule for settlement within the settlement terminal 200.
For example, the settlement terminal 200 may be implemented to communicate with the mobile communication terminal 210 based on an infrared communication international standard (IrFM) . In general, I-Cue™ (IrFM) , whichwas formallyadopted as the infrared communication international standard (IrFM) by international infrared data association (IrDA) , has been used as settlement standard of a portable personal information device such as PDA all over the world. An IrFM communication system does not require permission for frequency use because this system uses light, not radio waves and has an advantage of wide bandwidth, high transmission speed, low power consumption and low costs of parts.
Fig.3 is a flow chart illustrating a settlement process using a settlement terminal performing local area radio communication with a mobile communication terminal according to the present invention.
Referring to Fig. 3, when a use wishes to settle money to a franchise using the settlement system of the present invention, he inputs settlement information including the settlement money through a settlement terminal of the franchise (Step 301) .
Then, the settlementinformationinputthroughthe settlement terminal is transmitted to the mobile communication terminal of the user through local area radio communication means (Step 302) . At this time, the mobile communication terminal must be located nearthe settlement terminal tomake local area radio communication between the settlement terminal and the mobile communication terminal possible. On the other hand, if a plurality of mobile communication terminals is detectednear the settlement terminal, it is preferable to output an error message and progress the settlement process again.
The mobile communication terminal of the user that received the settlement information indicates that the settlement information was correctly received and prompts the user to input his password for authentication of the settlement process (Step 303) .
When the password is correctly input, the settlement information is transmitted to a relevant financial institution through a mobile communication network (Step 304) . The financial institution that received the settlement information confirms the received settlement information and approves and processes the settlement. Then, the financial institution feeds back a result of the approval and process of the settlement to the mobile communication terminal of the user (Step 306) . On the other hand, settlement approval information that was fed back to the mobile communication terminal of the user may be again transmitted to the settlement terminal through the local area radio communication means. The settlement terminal that receivedthe settlement approval informationmayoutput a relevant receipt (Step 307) .
So far, the settlement system and method according to the present invention have been described in a general sense. Hereinafter, the settlement process according to embodiments of the present invention will be more concretely described by way of examples with reference to Figs. 4 and 5.

The encrypted user authentication information and settlement information received in the settlement server 430 are decrypted. At this time, the settlement server 430 confirms the user authentication from the decrypted user authentication information and confirms user settlement authentication. In addition, the settlement server 430 confirms the settlement money input through the settlement terminal 410 from the decrypted settlement information.
Then, the settlement server 430 requests a financial institution 450 to process the settlement money for the authenticated user. That is, settlement money information and the user authentication information are transmitted from the settlement server 430 to the financial institution 450. The financial institution 450 confirms the received user authentication information and the settlement money information and decides settlement approval. On the other hand, depending on a settlement account or a settlement mode selected by the user, the settlement process may be performed through a card company 452, a bank 453, or a third settlement institution 454. After settlement process of the financial institution 450, settlement approval information is fed back to the settlement server 430. At this time, if the settlement mode of the user is cash settlement, the settlement approval information is transmitted to National Tax Service 440 for linkage with an electronic tax administration service. That is, the National Tax Service 440 stores the settlement information in the account of a franchise that conducts the settlement.
On the other hand, the settlement server 430 informs the user of correct progress of the settlement process by feeding back the received settlement approval information to the mobile communication terminal 420 of the user. In addition, the settlement approval information may be again transmitted to and output by the settlement terminal 410 through the local area radio communication. Fig.5 is a flow chart illustrating a settlement process using a settlement terminal performing local area radio communication with a mobile communication terminal according to an embodiment of the present invention.

When the settlement money is input through the input interface according to the settlement money input request (Step 503) , the settlement module requests the user to select settlement means (Step 504) . Then, when the settlement means is selected through the input interface (Step 505) , the settlement module of the settlement terminal requests settlement request confirmation (Step 506) and completes the settlement information input process (Step 301 in Fig. 3) through the settlement terminal by making a request for settlement through the input interface according to this confirmation request (Step 507) . On the other hand, a communication module of the settlement terminal determines whether or not the mobile communication terminal of the user who wishes to settle money approaches the settlement terminal, and identifies the approaching mobile communication terminal (Step 508) . In addition, the settlement module of the settlement terminal encrypts identification informationandsettlement informationandtransmitstheencrypted information to the communication module (Step 509) .
The communication module transmits the settlement informationtotheapproachingmobile communicationterminal (Step 510) . Themobile communication terminal receives the transmitted settlement information and confirms through the received settlement information whether or not the settlement information is correctly transmitted (Step 511) . Then, the mobile communication terminal prompts a user of the mobile communication terminal to input a settlement password (Step 512) and is input with the settlement password through an input interface of the mobile communication terminal (Step 513) .
The settlement information received in the mobile communication terminal is encrypted (Step 514) . The encrypted settlement information is transmitted to a mobile communication network (Step 515) . The mobile communication network receives the settlement information and stores information on the mobile communication terminal (Step 516) . Then, themobile communicationnetworktransmits thereceived settlement information to a settlement server (Step 517) , and the settlement server stores the transmitted settlement information (Step 518) .
