Abstract

An filtration system and method provides the ability to filter a wide range of extremely fine particulate matter in solution ranging in size from micron size particles to molecular elements. The apparatus (10) includes a pressure vessel housing (12) a cross-flow filtration assembly (26) including a plurality of spiral wound type membrane filtration elements (28) in a parallel arrangement. The position of the vessel’s feed inlet (22) combined with the geometry of the membrane elements (28) provides a continuous scouring of the face of the elements (28). The system significantly reduces fouling of the elements (28), minimized the pressure drop through the elements (28), and allows the elements (28) to operate at a high efficiency for longer durations between backwash cycles.
