Definitions
- the present invention relates to an endoscope, and in particular to an endoscope suitable for viewing an object in an individual's body.
- Endoscopes are commonly used in a range of applications allowing minimally invasive visualisation of and access to objects in locations that are otherwise difficult to access.
- endoscopes are widely used in the medical field, where diagnostic and surgical endoscopic techniques have become an integral part of modern medical practice.
- an endoscope allows viewing at a proximal end thereof an object located at or adjacent to a distal end thereof.
- Two types of endoscope are known: rigid and flexible endoscopes. These types of instruments typically differ with regard to the means by which an image of the object at or adjacent to the distal end of the endoscope is relayed to the proximal end thereof for viewing.
- a rigid endoscope relies upon a system of lenses to relay the image, whereas a flexible endoscope employs optical fibres for this purpose.
- rigid endoscopes are typically relatively short instruments (flexible endoscopes may be longer) and as a consequence, the means for viewing an image at the proximal end of the endoscope, usually an eyepiece or camera system, must be located relatively close to the object to be viewed. In a surgical setting, this can be a significant drawback of rigid endoscopes, since the viewing means, which may be heavy and bulky, is situated close to the operative site, hampering the surgeon carrying out the procedure, and increasing the risk of infection or contamination of the operative site.
- the present invention has been made from a consideration of these problems.
- an endoscope for viewing at a proximal end thereof an object at a distal end thereof located in an individual's body, wherein the endoscope comprises an elongate housing having a rigid distal portion in which is housed an objective lens means operative to form an image of the object, and a coherent fibre bundle operative to relay said image to the proximal end of the endoscope for viewing.
- the viewing means may be located remotely from an operative site, thereby alleviating the need to deal with heavy and bulky equipment during a surgical procedure and reducing the potential for infection or contamination at the operative site.
- the arrangement of the present invention also considerably reduces the risk of breakages compared to present rigid endoscopes.
- an endoscope typically comprises an illumination means for illuminating the object to be viewed, an objective lens means for forming an image of the object at the distal end of the endoscope, an image transmission means for relaying the image to the proximal end of the endoscope and a viewing means for viewing the image of the object at the proximal end of the endoscope.
- the endoscope of the present invention has an image transmission means comprising a coherent fibre bundle relay, advantageously allowing for a relatively long endoscope.
- the relay may be housed within an elongate housing that is configured for ease of access to the relay, to facilitate replacement or repair of the relay in the event that damage thereof occurs. Images may be viewed at the proximal end of the endoscope using any suitable means. For example, an eyepiece, camera or CCD coupler may be provided as a viewing means.
- an endoscope is usually provided with an instrument channel through which surgical or other instruments may be passed.
- the endoscope of the present invention may further comprise an instrument channel for insertion of an instrument, such as a laser probe.
- the endoscope is provided with an irrigation system, most preferably a continuous flow irrigation system. Fluid may flow through an instrument channel. Preferably, fluid flows into the endoscope via the instrument channel and out via a tube provided therefor, although the reverse arrangement may be used. Thus, irrigation of a cavity into which the endoscope is inserted may be achieved.
- the endoscope is a spinal endoscope.
- the rigid distal portion of the elongate housing has a generally elliptical cross-section.
- the present invention allows for a wide range of endoscopic working lengths and diameters.
- Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic, partially cut-away plan view of an endoscope according to the present invention
- Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic, partially cut-away plan view of the endoscope of
- an endoscope 10 comprises an elongate tubular housing 11, the proximal end 12 of which is attached to a hub member 13.
- the elongate housing 11 has a rigid distal portion 14 terminating at the distal end 16 of the endoscope 10.
- An objective lens set is housed within the rigid distal portion.
- An outer sheath 15 covers the elongate housing 11.
- a coherent fibre bundle is contained within a tube 17 spanning the length of the elongate housing 11 and itself contained within said elongate housing 11.
- the coherent fibre bundle terminates at an optical connector 18 of the hub member 13.
- An illumination fibre is also contained within the elongate housing 11, spanning the length of the endoscope 10 and terminating at an illumination connector 19 of the hub member 13.
- the hub member 13 is provided with an inlet 21 having a stop-cock 22.
- the inlet 21 is connected to an irrigation tube 23 running the length of the elongate housing 11.
- the hub member is further provided with an outlet 24 with a stop-cock 26.
- the outlet 24 is continuous with an instrument channel 27 which opens at the distal end 16 of the elongate housing 11.
- a laser probe may be inserted into the instrument channel 27 via an entry port 28.
- a light source is connected to the illumination connector 19, light therefrom then being relayed via the illumination fibre to the distal end 16 of the elongate housing 11 where it illuminates an object to be viewed.
- This object may be located within, for example, an individual's body, in which case at least the distal end 16 of the elongate housing 11 will be inserted into said body.
- An image of the object is focussed by the objective lens means within the distal portion 14 of the elongate housing 11.
- the image is relayed by the coherent fibre bundle to the proximal end thereof where it is detected by a viewing means, for example an eyepiece or camera, remote from the object and connected to the optical connector 18. In this way, the object may conveniently be viewed.
- Continuous flow irrigation may be provided by attaching a supply of irrigation fluid to the inlet 21 and setting the stop-cock 22 to allow flow therethrough. Fluid flows through the irrigation tube 23 and out of said tube 23 at the distal end thereof. Fluid is sucked back through the instrument channel 27 by a suction device or similar attached to the outlet 24, the stop-cock 26 being set to allow flow therethrough.
- a laser probe or other device or instrument may conveniently be fed through the instrument channel.
- one preferred embodiment of the present invention provides an endoscope having a formed distal portion of approximately 75mm in length, an elongate housing having a diameter of approximately 7mm and a hub member having an outer diameter of approximately 29mm.
