Abstract

A diagnostic instrument (20) is described, for use with a mobile communication device (10), such as a mobile telephone. The instrument (20) has a body (22) which includes a connector (24) complementary to the connector (18) of the telephone (10). The instrument (20) includes a display (26), such as light emitting diodes (28). When connected to the telephone (10), operation of the telephone (10) (by user control or to follow a predetermined test procedure) results in voltage changes or other changes at the terminals of the connector (18). These are sensed by the instrument (20) and the LEDs (28) are activated in response. If an expected illumination pattern or sequence is not seen, this indicates that the telephone is not functioning correctly, and may indicate the nature of the fault.
