Abstract

An all terrain wheelchair for outdoor recreational use includes opposite frame members (10, 11) each having a forward wheel (52) and a rear wheel (36) rotatably mounted thereto. A collapsible hinged brace assembly (8) fitted between the frame members (10, 11) locks in an expanded box configuration to hold the opposite frame members apart, defining an operable position for use of the wheelchair. The front and rear wheels (52, 36) include wide rims (60) and tires (64) to provide increased traction and surface contact area when traversing soft terrain. Batteries (130) placed in the box-shaped brace assembly (8) , below the seat (77), supply power to electric motors (104) of a belt drive system (100) which drives the rear wheels (36) in the forward and reverse direction. A joystick (140) controller on the armrest (34) allows the user to control the speed and direction of movement of the wheelchair.
