Definitions
- the invention relates to a press for expelling liquid from fish, meat, fruit, slurry or similar liquid-containing media, said press being provided with a rotating worm to which the medium is fed and is transported through the press by the rotation of the worm, liquid being expelled by a pressure in the medium in the worm created by the rotation thereof, and wherein the worm is surrounded by a likewise rotating shell (3, 3') which extends close to the exterior of the shell and is provided with openings to form a screen or sieve through which the liquid (10) may flow when the worm (12, 13) is rotated, and wherein the rotation of the shell (3, 3') and of the worm may be varied separately both with respect to speed of rotation and direction of rotation, and wherein a valve (17, 18) is provided at the outlet end of the shell, said valve being adjustable to regulate the outflow area and thereby the flow of the medium from which liquid has been expelled as well as the pressure of the medium in the worm.
- a device of this type comprises a screw press in which a rotating worm carries the medium toward a screen.
- a rotating worm is surrounded by a casing or a shell which may contain or be formed by screen material, such that the liquid, when being subjected to the pressure by the transport of the worm, is pressed out through this screen or sieve and is collected in a vessel or a container surrounding the screen, and in which the sped of rotation of both the worm and the shell may be adjusted with a view to achieving a specific degree of liquid expulsion from the medium.
- US Patent No. 5 357 855 describes a press of this type, in which the core of the worm is conical so that the pressure of the press is achieved partly be- cause of the decreasing volume along the worm that causes compression of the material at the rotation of the worm, and in which also a conical valve is provided at the outlet of the press whose valve opening may be adjusted to change the outlet opening and the pressure in the worm.
- the speed and direction of rotation of the worm and the rotating screen shell may be changed separately and mutually independently.
- valve provided at the outlet end of the press is arranged such that it may be adjusted to create a variable and/or pulsating counterpressure for the medium during the feeding of it through the shell, as is stated in the characterizing portion of claim 1.
- the pulsating pressure results in a higher degree of liquid expulsion, presumably because of the push-like effect on the medium in the press (press cake), and it also allows more precise adjustment of the desired liquid expulsion by means of speed and/or direction of rotation of the worm and the shell.
- Claim 2 defines an expedient embodiment of this valve.
- press cake turner an ar- rangement in which, as stated in claim 3, in an area between the inlet and the outlet of the medium, the inner side of the shell has mounted thereon one or more strip- or plate-shaped members which extend inwards between the turns of the worm, are arranged obliquely relative to the radial plane of the shell and are arranged and configured such that, at the mutual rotation between the worm and the shell, they affect the medium to change its orientation, in particularly to loosen and turn the block of medium (press cake).
- part of the turns of the worm may be removed in the area where they extend inwards from the shell, as stated in claim 4.
- the plate members or the strips may be shaped so as to act like ploughshares, as stated in claim 5, so that they can effectively loosen and turn the press cake. Expediently, several of these may be provided, preferably 3, distributed angularly evenly in the shell, as stated in claim 6.
- fig. 1 shows a vertical section of the press, seen from above
- fig. 2 shows a vertical section of the press, seen from the side
- fig. 3 shows a corresponding view of a press having "press cake turners"
- fig. 4 shows a section of the shell having "press cake turners", seen in perspective. Description of the embodiment
- the press 1 comprises a worm 12 having a worm turn 13, said worm being mounted 14 at one end and at the opposite end in a bearing 15 and connected with a drive motor 16 via a gear 6.
- the diameter of the worm may e.g. be 650 mm, and its rotation may be between 1 and 2 rotations per minute in the screw direction of the worm, which is from the left to the right in the drawing.
- a shell 3 extends around this worm 12, 13.
- this shell is composed of sections which are assembled to form a cylindrically extending sieve or screen.
- the shell capable of resisting the outwardly directed pressure, they may be formed with ribs or braces 3' on the outer side, as indicated in the drawing.
- the shell 3 extends as close as possible to the worm turn 13 to make the expulsion of liquid from the medium as effective as possible.
- the screen shell 3, 3' is mounted 7 a distance inwardly on the inlet end of the worm, whereby the inlet opening gives access to the worm, as indicated in fig. 1.
- the shell is moreover mounted around the middle, and at its opposite end it is provided with a ring-shaped valve seat as well as a carrier device 4 in the form of two or more carrier stays which are rotated by a drive motor 5, see fig. 2, via a gear 6.
- the screen shell 3, 3' may selectively be rotated in two different directions of rotation, and it may take place with 2 to 4 rotations per minute.
- the screen shell may moreover be made of a pipe section having screen holes, which has the advantage that it does not need the same mounting and bracing as described above because of the rigidity of the pipe itself.
- a valve member 18 is mounted for cooperation with the valve seat at the outlet end of the shell, said valve member being movable by means of two operating cylinders 17 toward the valve seat to adjust the outlet, as indicated at the top of figs. 1 and 2, and open the outlet as indicated at the bottom of figs. 1 and 2.
- Discharge of the medium takes place via a discharge opening 11 , as shown in fig. 2, and the expelled liquid is conveyed from the shell to an underlying trough 9 from where it may be removed as liquid 10, as shown in fig. 2.
- a jacket 2 is mounted around the press in a known manner so that it appears as indicated in the drawing.
- Fig. 3 shows a vertical section through a press which is provided with "press cake turners" 20.
- Three inclined plate members 20 are arranged on the inner side of the section 21 so as to extend inwards between the turns of the worm 13. As will be seen, part of the turns is removed at the area where the plate members are present to give room for these.
- Fig. 4 shows an example of how the plate members 20 may be mounted internally in a section 21 of the shell. As shown in fig. 3, the sections may be mounted as part of the shell 3, 3'. This ensures that the sections 21 may be replaced by sections having other configurations of the plate members, just as a damaged or deformed section may easily be replaced.
- the medium may be boiled fish, where the capacity of the press allows feeding of up to 50 1 an hour.
- the fish 8 is fed to the inlet end of the worm 12, 13, and its rotation causes the medium to be moved to the right and into the screen shell 3, 3'.
- the medium is hereby pressed against the screen wall during the feeding, and the liquid will be expelled through the screen openings in the shell.
- a further advantage is that the screen openings may be dimensioned so small, below 1 mm in cross-section, that practically no solid matter will be entrained with the liquid from the press.
- the liquid is so clean that there is no need for filtering solid matter from the liquid.
- valve 18 may be caused to adjust and allow, respectively, outflow of the medium, which means that the medium is compressed and relieved in terms of pressure, respectively.
- This pulsating effect contributes to the achievement of an unexpectedly high degree of solid matter percentage, viz. up to 50% and higher.
- the pulsation may assume a frequency of between 0.1 and 50 Hz.
- the press may adjust the elements, such as speed of rotation and direction of rotation of the shell as well as the position of the valve to achieve a very uniform resulting solid matter and liquid percentage. And this is possible even though the medium varies with respect to consistency and liquid content.
- the press is suitable for expelling liquid from many different media, pro- vided that they are transportable in the worm. It may e.g. be foods of many different types, such as fruit, and it may also be meat and fish.
- the press may moreover be formed with an additional shell that extends externally around the screen shell extending around the worm, so that the slurry, after having passed the inner screen shell, is turned to be pressed oppositely through the additional externally extending screen shell.
- the length of the press may hereby be reduced by about one-half.
- the press is sturdy and operationally reliable, just as it is easy to service, since e.g. a screen element is easily replaced if it should be damaged by a hard object or the like.
