Definitions

  • Chain saws using saw chain are used to harvest logs for saw mills and pulp manufacture. They can be hand held or mounted on a harvester vehicle. Logging is to a large extent done in wintertime, since forests in northern regions often grow on moist or boggy grounds which are difficult to traverse with powered vehicles in summer but less difficult when frozen in winter. Wintertime logging in frozen forests requires saw chain which can retain its toughness at those temperatures and there have been many attempts to find specific alloys which can stand sub-zero temperatures without embrittlement, as described in patents US 3,854,363 and EP 745 696. A problem with these has been, however, that they may be either too soft to make a durable cutting edge, or that they may be difficult to cut into blanks for the chain links.
  • the present invention concerns a method to manufacture saw chain which combines toughness at low temperatures with adequate edge durability, while using a low cost easily machined steel alloy.
  • a saw chain according to the invention is described with reference to figure 1, which shows a portion of such a saw chain and the links it is composed from.
  • the saw chain comprises drive links (10) which extend below the other links, side links (11) on both sides of the drive links, and cutter links (12) which are similar to side links but carry cutters (14) with cutting edges (15) and depth gages (16).
  • Side links and cutter links are rigidly joined together with rivets (13) which penetrate through holes in the drive links to ensure flexibility of the chain.
  • the lower side extensions of the drive links (10) run in a groove in an edge of a guide bar to guide the saw chain along the guide bar.
  • the saw chain is also propelled along the guide bar by teeth of a drive sprocket acting upon the rear contour of the lower side extensions of the drive links.
  • All or some of the drive links may also carry upper side extensions to reduce impact of the depth gages against the wood to be cut. Failure of steel components exposed to vibration and numerous small impacts usually occurs through gradual growth of small initial cracks until the crack has grown so far through the component that the remaining section is too small. Large numbers of small initial cracks are found in deformation zones at cut metal surfaces or where metal pieces rub against each other without sufficient lubrication.
  • the rubbing is especially dangerous at low temperatures where the lubricant becomes too stiff to spread over the surfaces, and crack growth is usually much more rapid at low temperatures.
  • the cutter links (12) are made with a high enough hardness to make a durable cutting edge (15), and the drive links (10) with a much lower hardness.
  • Side links (11) other than cutter links may preferably have the same hardness as the cutter links (12), to make the rivet connections symmetric.
  • a typical steel alloy for saw chain is AISI 8660 containing 0.5 to 0.9 % C, 0.3 to 0.7 % Cr, 0.3 to 0.7 % Mn, 0.5 to 1.0 % Ni and 0.1 to 0.3 % Mo.
  • the cutter links (12) it is hardened and quenched to HRC 52 to 55, which makes an excellent edge sharpness.
  • the toughness of such a link decreases strongly at low temperature, but since stresses are low in this cutter link, except at the cutting edge, the strength is sufficient, and since the edge is heated by friction in use, its toughness is not critical.
  • the quenching is done in a salt bath at higher temperature 325-350 C for at least five minutes, which produces a hardness of 45 to 49 HRC.
  • Such a drive link has a higher toughness, which makes it much less prone to crack growth than if it had been heat treated like the cutter link.
  • the side links (11) may preferrably be heat treated like the cutter links.
  • these can be made with greater thickness in their upper portions between the side links, and with a smaller thickness in their lower extensions running in the guide bar groove. This also allows a higher chain speed.
