Abstract

A method and apparatus (fig. 1) are provided for automatically verifying address information. A consumer places an online order for a product by providing order information to an electronic commerce system through a merchant (108) and over a public data network (106). The order information includes a delivery address to which the consumer desires the product to be delivered. The delivery address is parsed and converted, using a plurality of tests, to include City-State-Zip confirmation adn Street Address parsing. The hypothesized address is looked up in an address database (118). If the lookup fails, other tests are carried out based on assumptions about possible errors in the results of the previous tests and in the address information. One or more further lookups are carried out to verify the address. Information that describes the results of these operations may be passed to a calling program, enabling it to interact with the consumer to correct any errors in the delivery address. As a result, the accuracy of deliveries of products ordered through online electronic commerce systems is significantly improved.
