Abstract

A method and apparatus for measuring fluid levels in storage and process vessels containing multiple levels of components having different dielectric constants. The apparatus includes a capacitance cell having at least two electrodes (30, 32) configured to self-shield at least one of such electrodes; and detection and measurement electronics (22) including a charging circuit for charging the capacitance of the probe (2) to a known voltage, a transfer circuit for transferring charge from the probe to a reference capacitance, a measuring circuit, a processor for calculating level using the measured voltage and pre-set calibration parameters. The level detection and measurement electronics (22) detects the level of a first fluid as a measured capacitance and the presence of a second fluid as a significant change in the measured capacitance. The detection and measurement electronics (22) may include a communication interface for transferring the level to local or remote display (24) and/or data storage.
