Definitions
- the present invention relates to a watch case comprising a waterproof envelope composed of several stacked parts, which together delimit a housing intended to contain a watch movement, and a support device which keeps said parts of the envelope assembled, the envelope having a transparent upper face, the support device comprising at least one rigid flange composed of an upper part and a lower part which are fixed to each other in a removable manner by assembly members arranged to produce a tightening the envelope between the two parts of the flange in an axial direction, perpendicular to said upper face.
- the invention applies more particularly to watch cases whose outer casing containing the movement consists mainly of parts made of hard materials and therefore difficult to machine, such as sapphire, "hard metals" or metal carbides, ceramics or even mineral glass.
- the watch case described in publication CH 622 151 essentially consists of three pieces stacked axially, namely a substantially flat metal bottom provided with four horns for fixing a bracelet, an annular middle made of a hard material, and a crystal consisting of a completely flat sapphire plate.
- the middle part is fixed to the bottom by means of axial screws passing through holes in these two parts.
- the crystal provided with a metallized strip along the edge of its lower face, is glued to the middle so as to cover the heads of the screws and ensure a tight connection.
- the seal at the bottom is provided by a conventional annular seal housed in a recess in the metal bottom.
- a drawback of this construction obviously lies in the cost of machining the holes passing through the entire middle part. Furthermore, the numerous machining operations required on the bottom do not allow it to be economically made from a hard material, for example the same material as the middle part, which would be more aesthetic. If the material of the middle part is translucent, we can unfortunately see the screws it contains, as well as the gasket. Finally, the fact that the horns of attachment to the bracelet are at the bottom is detrimental to the aesthetics.
- Publication CH 632 374 describes a watch case, the envelope of which consists of two pieces of transparent or translucent mineral material, one of which is a hollowed-out piece forming the crystal and the middle part, and the other is a flat bottom ensuring a watertight closure of the case thanks to a seal fitted in a groove in the middle.
- These two pieces are held together by means of two opposite metal elements each having two horns for fixing the bracelet.
- Each element has an upper claw and a lower claw between which the two parts of the envelope are held tight using a spring.
- Each element is glued against the lateral face of the middle part, so that it cannot be dismantled and must withstand the pull of the bracelet.
- the box can only be opened and closed by sliding the bottom sideways, which could damage the seal.
- the object of the present invention is to substantially avoid the abovementioned drawbacks, by creating a waterproof watch case having an envelope capable of being produced at an acceptable cost in hard materials and the sealing of which can be ensured by means simple and safe.
- a particular goal is to create a box of a high aesthetic level, especially if the envelope is made mainly of transparent or translucent materials such as sapphire or mineral glass, which reveal the clockwork movement, but as little as possible. other elements such as fixing or sealing members inside the box.
- a watch case of the kind indicated in the preamble characterized in that said parts of the envelope are made of materials with zero or closed porosity and have, one opposite the other, mutual contact surfaces which are planar or of revolution and are polished, no gasket being interposed therebetween.
- the manufacture of the parts of the envelope is particularly simplified, since the machining of the flat contact surfaces or of revolution is simpler and less costly than for any other form of surface.
- the axial tightening carried out perpendicular to these surfaces by the external support device which preferably comprises screws arranged in the axial direction, guarantees good resistance of the envelope and reliable sealing on the contact surfaces.
- the tightness of the envelope is ensured simply by the fact that the mutual contact surfaces of the parts of the envelope are non-porous and polished, no sealing n being interposed between them.
- machining simplified thanks to the absence of nesting members or grooves in the areas of mutual contact of the parts, but in addition the aesthetics are much better since we cannot see through the glass or other transparent parts, such parts or a seal such as an O-ring.
- FIG. 1 represents a first embodiment of a watch case according to the invention, sectional view along line II of Figure 2;
- Figure 2 is a top view of the box of Figure 1;
- Figure 3 is an exploded view of the main components of the box of Figures 1 and 2;
- 4 shows a second embodiment of a watch case according to the invention, seen in section along the line IV-IV of Figure 5;
- Figure 5 is a top view of the box of Figure 4;
- Figure 6 shows a third embodiment of a watch case according to the invention, seen in section along line VI-VI of Figure 7, and
- Figure 7 is a top view of the box of Figure 6 .
- the watch case illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3 comprises a casing 1 made of several pieces of hard material, and a support device 2 arranged to hold the pieces of the casing together and to connect the case to a fixing means.
- a fixing means which, in the present case, is a bracelet 3 the ends of which are fixed to the case by means of traditional bars 4.
- the casing 1 has here a circular shape and defines a sealed cylindrical housing 5 intended to contain a watch movement 6 provided with its display members, for example needles (not shown).
- the casing 1 is made up of three parts, namely a transparent upper plate constituting a crystal 7, a lower plate constituting a bottom 8, and an annular intermediate part constituting a middle part 9 and preferably comprising a lateral hole 10 for the passage of a control rod (not shown) of the movement 6.
- the three parts 7, 8, 9 have here the same circular shape and the same external dimensions.
- these three parts are made of sapphire, therefore transparent.
- the bottom 8 can advantageously be identical to the glass 7.
- the three parts 7, 8, 9 have particularly simple external shapes, in order to facilitate their manufacturing and in particular to reduce and simplify the machining and polishing operations.
- the middle 9 is an annular cylinder obtained by transverse sawing of a sapphire tube produced by extrusion. Its inner wall 11 and its outer wall 12 are cylindrical and have no recess, apart from the hole 10. Its upper and lower faces are flat and polished to form contact surfaces 13 and 14 on which the glass 7 and the bottom 8.
- the underside 24 of the glass 7 is entirely flat; near its outer edge, it is polished to form a contact surface 15 which is applied in sealed manner to the contact surface 13 of the middle part.
- the planar upper face 16 of the base 8 is polished near of its outer edge to form a contact surface 17 s' sealingly applied against the contact surface 14 of the middle.
- the tightness of the envelope 1 is ensured at the joints between the parts 7, 8 and 9 as long as these parts are held tightly together, thanks to the absence of porosity of the material and to the polishing of their mutual contact surfaces. 13 and 15, 14 and 17, without the need to interpose a seal, or to glue the parts to each other.
- an anti-reflective coating 40 (FIG. 3) is applied to the polished contact surfaces 13 and 14.
- the upper face 18 of the glass 7 and the lower face 19 of the bottom 8 are also flat and perpendicular to the central axis 20 of the envelope, but in this example they each have two parallel grooves 21, 22 in which engages the device support 2, as will be described later. These grooves preferably have a rectangular cross section and can be machined in a relatively inexpensive manner. Furthermore, a frustoconical chamfer 23 is formed around the glass 7 and the bottom 8.
- the parts 7, 8 and 9 of the envelope 1 can be made of hard materials in an economically bearable manner.
- these parts are devoid of protruding and / or recessed portions intended to produce sockets.
- they do not need a groove to accommodate seals.
- the support device 2 comprises, apart from the two bars 4, two rigid metal flanges 25 arranged parallel in vertical planes, that is to say parallel to the central axis 20 of the envelope 1.
- Each flange 25 comprises an upper part 26 and a lower part 27 which are assembled by means of two axial screws 28 tending to tighten the casing 1 between the two parts of the flange, thus forming a closed frame.
- the four screws 28 can advantageously be located outside the envelope 1, therefore they do not require a hole in the envelope.
- Their head is preferably embedded in the underside of the flange.
- the superimposed ends of the two parts 26 and 27 of each flange constitute horns 29 for fixing the bracelet 3, the ends of the bars 4 engaging in holes preferably made in the lower part 27 of the flange.
- the middle part of the upper part 26 of each flange has the shape of a rectangular bar 31 which is housed in the groove 21 of the glass 7 and has the same dimensions as this groove, so that the flange 25 is flush with the upper face 18 of the glass.
- the thicker ends of the part 26 each have a vertical shoulder 32 arranged obliquely to be applied against the surfaces external peripherals 33 and 12 of the crystal 7 and the middle part 9, which keeps these two parts in axial alignment.
- the lower part 27 of each flange 25 has a central bar 34 which is housed in the corresponding groove 22 of the bottom 8, and oblique shoulders 35 which bear against the respective peripheral surfaces 36 and 12 of the bottom 8 and the middle 9.
- the support device 2 fulfills a triple function: axial clamping of the stacked parts of the casing 1, lateral support of these three parts, and connection between the two ends of the bracelet and the casing.
- annular metallized zones 37 and 38 are provided respectively on the lower face 24 of the glass 7 and on the upper face 16 of the bottom 8, near the periphery of the housing 5, to allow certain conventional movement positioning members 6 to be stuck there, for example an encasing circle and a flange (not shown). These metallized areas also play an aesthetic role by masking the aforementioned elements. Other metallized elements can be provided, in particular the frame 39 shown in FIG. 2 and intended to cover the edge of a window formed in the dial of the movement 6.
- glass 7 could be made of any other transparent crystal, or in mineral glass.
- the middle 9 could also be made of mineral glass, ceramic, hard metal or generally any kind of hard material made in particular by molding and sintering. Similar materials can be used to make the bottom 8. Insofar as these materials can be polished to form optical plates, that is to say very smooth surfaces with zero or closed porosity, it is possible to guarantee the tightness of the envelope without gasket, as described above.
- the middle part 9 could be made in one piece with the glass 7 or with the base 8.
- a base part made by molding and sintering should only be machined for polishing the contact surface 13 and the drilling of hole 10. This hole could even be eliminated if a means of setting the time without contact is used, for example by radio or by magnetic drive.
- FIGS. 4 and 5 Another embodiment of a watch case according to the invention is illustrated by FIGS. 4 and 5, where the same reference numbers have been used as in the previous example for equivalent elements, even if their shapes or their provisions are different.
- the glass 7 and the bottom 8 are curved, but only for aesthetic reasons.
- the middle 9 is identical to that of the previous example.
- the two flanges 25 have a different shape from the previous example, because each of them carries one of the bars 4 by its ends bent at right angles to form two horns 29. Its two bars 31 and 34 are parallel to the bar 4, as well as the corresponding grooves 21 and 22 of the crystal 7 and the bottom 8. The tension of the bracelet is thus transmitted from one strap 25 to the other via the crystal and the bottom.
- this construction has the advantage of better clearing the central part of the casing 1, in particular to allow the movement 6 to be seen.
- the external shape of the envelope 1 is t substantially rectangular in plan.
- the inner wall 11 and the outer wall 12 of the middle part 9 also have in this case generatrices parallel to the axis 20 of the casing, so that the middle part can be produced from a tubular part.
- the glass 7 is curved and the bottom 8 is concave, both following a spherical profile, so that their contact surfaces with the middle part 9 also have the same spherical shape, which can be machined and polished without particular difficulty.
- the support device here comprises four flanges 45 each composed of an upper part 46 pressing on the glass, a lower part 47 pressing under the bottom and an axial screw 48 which passes through the three parts 7, 8, 9 of the casing 1 and ensures the axial clamping of these parts, as well as the retention of the flange 45 on the casing.
- the flanges 45 are arranged in pairs in parallel on the opposite ends of the casing to form two pairs of horns 49 supporting the bars 4.
- the upper 46 and lower 47 parts of each flange have respective prongs 50 and 51 which, preferably , are engaged in corresponding external grooves of the glass 7 and of the bottom 8, as in the example of FIGS. 1 to 3.
- each flange 45 can be ensured by pressing against the envelope and by the screws 48 engaged in the corresponding holes of the envelope.
- the support device shown here is advantageous when the glass and the bottom are both transparent, since it does not mask the housing 5 containing the movement 6 at all, or when some of the parts of the envelope are not made of hard material and can therefore be pierced easily.
