Abstract

A system for use on aluminium beverage cans that are opened by pulling a lever (4) in the middle of the lid (1) and thereby driving a seal into the can. Such cans cannot be closed again once they have been opened, so the can contents may inadvertently be spilt. In addition, the can lid gets covered with foreign matter which then falls into the liquid on opening. The solution is a closure consisting of a metal or plastic tab (2) attached to the lever pivot and rotatable into a position in which it seals the hole in the can. Once the tab is over the hole, the lever is used to apply pressure thereon and hold the tab over the opening. The protective tab is positioned over the sealed hole at the time of manufacture to protect it from the environment. Prior to opening, the tab is rotated to expose the unsoiled seal and the ingress of foreign matter into the liquid is avoided.

Description

Technical area: The system concerns aluminum beverage cans, the opening of which is done by means of a lever, fixed in the center of the lid, used to push a capsule inside the can (fig. 7, the original cover, decapsulated). The proposed modifications relate to the cover and therefore affect its production line exclusively.
These boxes presently pose two problems. On the one hand, since they cannot be closed, they are subject to liquid overflows when they are used under unstable conditions. Any movement or transport of the open box requires attention to keep it in an upright position. Empty, it cannot be stored properly because it continues to disperse the few remaining drops through the hole that remains open, a problem encountered especially in cars, where nothing is planned to store empty boxes vertically. On the other hand, during the handling and storage phases of the new box, its cover is covered with various dusts and impurities which will be precipitated directly into the liquid by the depression of the capsule, the latter coming into contact with the content.
Disclosure of the invention: The solution proposed to overcome these drawbacks is a cover composed of a plastic or metal tab fixed to the central pivot of the opening lever, and allowing the latter to move by rotation to come obstruct the hole, in order to avoid inadvertent overflows when handling the box. Once the tab is placed on the hole, the lever is used to exert a vertical pressure and keep it pressed against the opening. The box can thus be transported open, without it being necessary to monitor its stability. If it tips over, the user has time to put it back on its feet.
To remedy the problem of dust accumulated on the capsule, the box is packaged and sold with the protective tab ON the non-decapsulated hole (fig. 1, capsule protected by the tab). Before uncapping, the tongue is turned to reveal the capsule (fig. 2), which has remained clean, thus preventing deposits from being introduced into the liquid. Example of application and description of the drawings The proposed example is based on one of the most common cover models (fig 7), where the lever-pivot-capsule assembly is at a level (fig 17) lower by a few tenths millimeters to the rest of the surface (fig 18, and sections fig 13 to 16) For the other models presenting a completely flat cover, the profile of the tongue must be studied so that it seals the hole as well as possible. the box, the tongue covers the capsule (fig 1) The opening lever which is located on the tongue is then in the inverted position It is then advisable to rotate the whole of a half-turn to discover the capsule (fιg. 2: Direction of rotation illustrated at the top right) To facilitate its rotation, the tongue has a protruding lug (fig 13-3) allowing it to exert a horizontal force with the finger The box is then ready to be opened normally (fig 3) Once the box has been opened (fig 4, perspective view ive fig 9 and in section fig 13), the user can, if necessary, bring the tab above the hole by rotation (fig 5), while maintaining the lever in its original position, thus protecting the orifice (view in section fig 14), and keep it pressed there by using the opening lever to press vertically on it, as during uncapping (fig 6, inclined lever, perspective view fig 12)
In order to facilitate the manipulation of the lever when the cover is pressed on the hole, the profile of the tongue has a concave part, forming a hollow where the lever comes to press (fig 15-5), which allows increase its angle of inclination, for a better grip with the finger and a firmer support on the tongue (fig 10 tongue without recess, view without lever, fig 11 tongue with recess at the point of contact) The capsule of the current boxes already presenting a similar hollow, intended for the same purpose, the tongue can come to be superimposed there without leaving a space between the two The lever in inclined position, keeping the tongue compressed on the orifice, is maintained in the state by the force of resistance to torsion of the metal which prevents it from going up Nevertheless, to secure its position, the hollow of the tongue favoring its inclination is provided with a notch (stop) or the lever comes to lock during the compression phase of the tab (fig 16-6) A sim full horizontal rotation of the lever or tab will free them, if necessary, from this fixing point Way of realizing the invention The modifications to be made to the boxes as they exist concern,
The cover of the box The current cover (example fig 7) must be stamped in such a way (example fig 8, without tongue) that its new profii can best fit the contours of the tongue, in order to favor the sealing of the contact
The opening lever assembly The safety tab (fig 13-2) is placed BETWEEN the lever (fig 13-4) and the cover (fig 13-1) Depending on the material or materials used for the tab, the the opening lever will then be more or less raised depending on the thickness of the latter, which could no longer allow it to have sufficient length to depress the capsule II In this case it would be advisable to lengthen the length of the segment more or less AB (fig 13) of the lever to keep it efficient
The tab of plastic, metal, or whatever sets of materials it is, it must be impermeable to liquids and have a shape such that it completely covers the hole in the box
