Definitions
- This invention relates to a dispensing system for merchandise, more particularly to a dispensing system for branded goods in retail outlets.
- New products and varieties of consumer goods are continually marketed through retail outlets.
- retail shelf space is limited. Maintaining existing shelf space allocation and gaining further space for new products and varieties is a critical problem for all manufacturers of such goods.
- the shelf In order to count on-shelf stock with existing shelf systems, the shelf must first be tidied, brand by brand and variety by variety into individual rows. Units of goods in each row are then counted as accurately as is visually possible, depending on the space between rows and the space between shelves. This method is both inefficient and very often inaccurate.
- the invention provides a receptacle for receiving and retaining units of goods, means for pushing said units forward on removal of a unit forward of said pushing means, said pushing means including a member engagable with a portion of a unit disposed innermost in said receptacle, and the receptacle being adapted to receive an extension receptacle which is slidable therein, extension of the extension receptacle allowing for the loading of fresh goods to the rear of existing goods.
- the pushing means comprises a tension spring.
- the tension spring is located internally of the floor or walls of the receptacle.
- the pushing means further comprises a flexible line connecting the spring to the unit engaging member.
- the pushing means includes means for anchoring the line to the spring.
- the line is anchored to the housing of the receptacle and to the unit engaging member, and the spring acts on a pulley around which the line travels intermediate the anchoring points.
- the pushing means further comprises one or more pulleys defining the path of the line between the spring and the unit engaging member.
- suitable arrangements of mobile pulleys around which a line passes can not only transmit movement (such as the movement of a spring), but can also amplify movement. For example, if a spring moves a pulley by a given distance within a housing and a line passing around this pulley is anchored at one end to the housing and at the other end to the unit engaging member, then the unit engaging member will be moved by twice the distance that the pulley was moved. Additional pulleys can amplify the movement even further.
- the unit engaging member is a paddle connected directly or indirectly to the tension spring.
- the dispensing system according to the invention allows the manufacturer and, indeed, the retailer to derive maximum benefit from allocated shelf space.
- the dispensing system according to the invention is ideally suited to individual and unique pack and bottle shapes and sizes.
- the paddle has brand information displayed on its unit engaging surface.
- This feature also ensures that when all units of goods have been removed, the purchaser is provided with brand image, and the vendor is visually alerted to the fact that the receptacle must be re-stacked.
- the unit engaging member travels on a track.
- the track comprises a longitudinal slot in which the unit engaging member is mounted.
- the extension receptacle is movable relative to the pushing means.
- extension receptacle disarms the pushing means.
- means are provided for supporting the extension receptacle in the fully extended position.
- the system also includes means for indicating the number of units of goods remaining at any given time.
- the means for indicating the number of units comprises a numbering system disposed on inner walls of the receptacle housing the units and a device for pushing the units to the rear of the receptacle to reveal said numbers and, thereby, permit a calculation of the remaining units to be made.
- the pushing device is a telescopic rod, more especially the rod is capable of being extended by variable fixed lengths.
- the pushing device has an arcuate shaped end for engaging units of goods.
- an operator can push units of goods from the front of a receptacle to the rear thereof, thereby revealing a numbering system on a side wall.
- the number thereby revealed represents the number of units remaining in the receptacle at any given time.
- system further comprises means for damping the movement of the pushing means when a unit is removed.
- the damping means comprises an air damper.
- the damping means comprises a cylinder in which a piston-like member is mounted, and wherein the movement of the piston-like member is linked to the movement of the pushing means.
- the piston-like member makes a close but non-sealing fit within the cylinder.
- the piston-like member is provided with a narrow orifice for the passage of fluid.
- the piston-like member is connected to the pushing means by a pulley and line system.
- the receptacle is suitably a tray which is adapted to retain the units of goods in a horizontal row.
- such trays are provided with means for engaging a similar adjacent tray, thereby providing a modular dispensing system. This allows one to build up a system of any size.
- the trays are provided with a male engaging member on one side which is capable of interengaging with a female member on an adjacent tray.
- a canopy unfurls as units are removed from the receptacle.
- the canopy extends along the tray revealing branding display.
- the receptacle is a sheath which is partially or completely transparent.
- the receptacle may be provided with cooling means.
- a plurality of the dispensing systems can be accommodated in a refrigeration unit.
- the system is adapted to contain bottles or cans.
- the system is adapted to receive and retain a plurality of 330ml beverage cans.
- the invention also provides a mounting system for a plurality of dispensing systems according to any preceding claim, the mounting system comprising a plurality of shelf members and means for connecting the shelf members in a spaced stacked arrangement such that each shelf member can support one or more of said dispensing systems.
- the connecting means comprises a vertical support member which is provided with means for receiving the shelf members.
- the shelf members are provided with means for engaging with the or each vertical support member.
- each shelf member is adapted to engage with the engaging means on an adjacent coplanar shelf member.
- the vertical support member is provided with means for varying the spacing between shelf members, such that display characteristics and space utilisation are optimised.
- each shelf member is provided with means for retaining the or each dispensing system. This may take the form of a simple lock or catch, or it may take the form of cooperating formations on the shelf member and the dispensing system. According to a preferred embodiment, the system is adapted to fit the interior of a refrigerator.

- Fig. 12 shows receptacle 51 which accommodates extension receptacle 53, and on which pushing means, indicated generally at 60, are mounted.
- Pushing means 60 comprises trolley 56 and paddle 55. Additional features will be described in more detail below. It can be seen that trolley 56 and paddle 55 are free to move along the length of both extension receptacle 53 and receptacle 51.
- Fig. 13 shows extension receptacle 53 in greater detail.
- Extension receptacle 53 comprises a long narrow tray.
- extension receptacle 53 is shown in an extended position relative to receptacle 51 for the purposes of reloading. It can be seen that paddle 55 has travelled to the front end of receptacle 51, and therefore the pushing mechanism is disarmed, but extension receptacle 53 is nevertheless able to be refilled.
- extension receptacle 53 is freely slidable within receptacle 51, and both extension receptacle 53 and receptacle 51 are provided with overlapping slots 57 allowing paddle 55 to move along the length of the receptacle 51 and the extension receptacle 53.
- Front wall 59 of extension receptacle 53 enables extension receptacle 53 to be pulled outward to the position shown in Fig. 14.
- a simple catch mechanism (not shown) normally holds extension receptacle 53 in the working position, as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10. This catch can be released to allow refilling of extension receptacle 53.
- the pushing means 60 which urges paddle 55 (and hence cans
- Fig. 15 shows a cross-sectional view of the device as shown in Fig. 11, taken from below, in which trolley 56, slot 57 (Fig. 10) and the underside of floor 58 can be seen.
- a tension spring 61 is in an extended configuration, and this spring 61 acts on a pulley block 62 on which a pulley 63 is mounted.
- a strong flexible nylon line 64 is anchored at one end thereof to an anchoring point 65.
- Nylon line 64 passes around pulley 63 and two additional pulleys 66,67, and its other end is anchored to trolley 56. This arrangement of the line 64 converts the force exerted by spring 61 (as it urges pulley block 62 to the right) to a force which pulls trolley 56 to the left. This in turn urges paddle 55 towards the front end 54 of receptacle 51 (see Figs. 9 and 10).
- spring 61 is shown in its relaxed (contracted) state, and it can be seen that the contraction of spring 61 has pulled trolley 56 along the length of slot 57.
- a second length of line 68 is anchored at both ends thereof to trolley 56 so as to form a loop.
- Line 68 passes around two pairs of pulleys 69,70, of which a pair is situated at either end of receptacle 51.
- the loop formed by line 68 runs along the length of slot 57 and back along a return path 71 where it passes through a hollow cylinder 72.
- line 68 carries a piston-like member 73 which forms a close but not sealing fit with the bore of cylinder 72.
- Cylinder 72 is substantially airtight at both ends, and so piston-like member 73 resists movement within the cylinder 72 (because of the build-up of air pressure in front of it as it moves forward).
- piston-like member 73 The degree of resistance provided by piston-like member 73 can of course be chosen, but the net effect of this arrangement is to provide a damping mechanism to the movement of trolley 56.
- the natural urge of trolley 56 would be to snap forward under the urging of spring 61, and this could cause injury to the fingers if they were trapped by the next can or by paddle 55 snapping forward.
- trolley 56 is urged forward, but the damping mechanism comprising cylinder 72 and piston-like member 73 ensures that the movement forward is gentle rather than abrupt.
- 74 PC ⁇ YIE96/00004
- the damping mechanism not only provides a safety feature but also converts the movement of the goods from a clatter to a gentle slide, which is less alarming and more aesthetically pleasing (all of which features must be taken into account in designing a display system which will be acceptable to retailers and to customers).
- Figs. 9-16 is particularly advantageous as it can be seen that the pushing mechamsm and damping mechanism is very compact and therefore the cross-sectional area of the system, when viewed from the front, is not much bigger than the cross section of the cans which are held therein.
- the front end of the receptacle can carry branding material so that the system makes the maximum visible impact.
- FIG. 17 a mounting system for arranging a plurality of dispensing systems of the type illustrated in Figs. 9-16 is shown.
- a free-standing display refrigerator, indicated generally at 80, is provided with a mounting system for mounting a plurality of dispensing systems 81 according to the invention.
- Dispensing systems 81 are of the type illustrated in Figs. 9-16, and are adapted to retain soft drinks cans 82.
- the mounting system comprises a plurality of stacked spaced shelf members 83,84 which are mounted in position on the walls and on a vertical support member 85.
- Vertical support member 85 is provided with means 86 for receiving and mounting the shelf members 83,84.
- Mounting means 86 allow the spacing between successive levels of shelf members 83,84 to be spaced as required to accommodate the size of the product in question.
- vertical support member 85 from the side.
- mounting means 86 which comprise apertures having lateral projections extending outwards from the plane of vertical support member 85 (see Fig. 17).
- vertical support member 85 can be seen from above and it can be seen at each level, vertical member 85 supports a pair of shelf members 83,84, on either side thereof.
- the mounting means as indicated generally at 86 in Fig. 19, are illustrated in detail in Fig. 20, again in plan view
- Shelf 83 is provided with engagement means in the form of a projection 87 having an aperture 88 therein.
- the mounting means 86 comprises a lateral projection 89 on which shelf projection 87 rests.
- Lateral projection 89 is provided with a pin 90 which makes a tight fit within aperture 88.
- projection 89 is formed at the base of an aperture in vertical support member 85, and through this aperture, a shelf projection 91 extending from shelf member 84 is affixed to mounting projection 89 in actually the same way as shelf projection 87 is affixed mounting projection 89.
- the side walls 92,93 are also provided with mounting projections 94 which support the , opposite ends of the shelf members 83,84 using exactly the same mechanism as that described in the preceding paragraph.
- the primary advantage of the mounting system according to the invention is that it can be used to convert a standard display fridge into a fridge which is particularly adapted to contain dispensing systems according to the invention.
- shelf members 83 and 84 are of a width which determines that vertical support member 85 divides the interior of the fridge into two compartments.
- the left compartment fits four dispensing machines of one size each of which is of width a; the right hand side is adapted to fit three dispensing machines of different size, each being of width b.
- Each type of dispensing machine would be adapted for particular goods, such as cans, bottles or food packets.
- a further advantage arising from this arrangement is that because the fridge is adapted to hold a specified configuration of dispensing system, the distribution company can design a display 74 PCME96/00004
- the entire volume of a display refrigerator need not be taken up by the mounting system according to the invention; if necessary, the mounting system can be installed in the top half, bottom half or some other portion of the refrigerator.
- the dispensing system according to the invention is a multi ⁇ functional retail dispensing system that can fit onto existing in-store shelving units or can be designed specifically as customised shelving units.
- the receptacles in the form of trays or tubes guard allocated shelf space against all competition advances. Furthermore, the system enables one to keep product within the manufacturer's recommended position in orderly and assigned rows.
- the spring mechanism or other means of urging product constantly to the front or to the top, as appropriate, of the receptacle housing the product creates the optimum on-shelf display achievable, which encourages maximum opportunity for consumer purchase.
- the system also allows for consistent on-shelf pack representation.
- the inclusion of means for indicating the number of units of goods remaining at any given time in the dispensing system according to the invention increases retailer/manufacturer shelf stock counting efficiencies and accuracy in the maintenance of orderly rows. Furthermore, a single action enables one to determine the exact number of product units on-shelf at any given time.
- the provision of the extension receptacle in the dispensing system according to the invention encourages personnel stacking shelves to load new product to the rear of the extended receptacle with minimum effort and consequent advantages.
- a strut for supporting the fully extended extension receptacle enables the shelf stacker to extend a long tray to its full length and have complete flexibility to load with both hands.
- the dispensing system in accordance with the invention can be designed to accommodate various shelf sizes and will allow products previously unstackable to be stacked, thus utilising to the maximum allocated shelf space.
