VESTIBULAR ANATOMICALLY-SHAPED SANITARY PAD FOR WOMEN
What are known as women's sanitary towels or pads are substantially divided into two kinds, one for external use and one for internal use. The external kind consists of a sort of flat oblong
'cushion' made to adhere to the outside of the vulvo-anal area, held in position by its own means or by panties. The menstrual flow and liquids generally emitted by female genital organs become absorbed by the highly ab- sorbent structure of these pads.
The pads are easy to put on but have a basic drawback in that absorption takes place outside the vulva when the liquid has become spread over practically the whole of the genital area. The pad absorbs it but does not eliminate it with a con¬ sequent feeling of dampness, unpleasant odours and by holding in contact with the body impurities which should be promptly removed and not left in the area. The internal sanitary towel is in effect a cylindrical plug to be inserted into the vagina.
Extraction is facilitated by a cord whose end hangs outside the vagina.
Having to remain in contact for a considerable time with highly sensitive and delicate organs, these plugs are nearly always very uncomfortable to wear apart from the risk of causing infection inside the body because of their re¬ taining waste matter that should be quickly eliminated. The above invention greatly lessens these drawbacks as will be explained below. Subject of the invention is a vestibular anatomically- -shaped sanitary pad for women, its form being flat and oblong of a size which substantially corresponds to that of the vestibule of the vulva. This vestibule is the narrow cavity with an arched bottom from which the urethra and vagina lead off and at whose sides are four longitudinal folds.
The pad is kept in place in said vestibule and stabilized at the outlet of the vagina by the two labia minora and two labia majora as well as by adherence provoked by dampness, and possibly by one of the usual sanitary pads placed in the normal way inside the pants.
The invented pad absorbs menstrual flow and other secre¬ tions from the vagina directing any extra menstrual fluid onto the usual kind of sanitary pad. One side of the invented pad is straight while the other, to fit into the bottom of the vulva vestibule, is straigh in the central part and arched at the ends. A cord, or equivalent means, is attached to one longitu¬ dinal end to facilitate removal of the pad. This pad has various dimensions according to preferences of the user and to the size of the organs in which it will be used.
One type offers advantages in that it has two flaps that open out in opposite directions from the side which remains outside the vulva.
These flaps can be folded as preferred, one on either face of the sanitary pad to facilitate packaging in bags or one being laid on another in piles.
The size of said flaps is preferably the same as that of the pad itself.
In one execution the side of the pad that will fit into the bottom of the vestibule has a central straight part and arched ends while the other side, to remain outside and flush with the two labia majora, is arched in shape.
In another execution the side that will penetrate in¬ side the vestibule is arched. Height of the pad will in that case be practically the same as the depth of the vestibule measuring from the outer edge of the labia majora.
Preferably that part of the pad to penetrate inside the vestibule is made of material, and so shaped, that it will easily form undulations and folds to facilitate curvature of the flaps and allow them to match with the surface marked off by the labia majora.
The invention clearly offers many advantages.
For the first time the invented sanitary pad ensures that absorptio takes place in the vestibule of the vulva avoiding harmful stagnation inside the vagina as occurs with the cylindrical plugs and also spreading of liquid outside the vulva as happens with use of the presently known external type of sanitary pad. The problem of a feeling of "wetness" is entirely solved
Being placed in the vestibule between the labia minora and labia majora, the pad captures and directs menstrual
flow and that of other secretions immediately at the exit from the vagina thus preventing spread of fluids outside the vulva and especially towards the anus. Particularly at night spread of this flow is prevented avoiding risk of stained bed linen.
These are decided advantages for female health and hy¬ giene, for a much more rational use of these objects and for their elimination after use. Great economy can also be made, given the small dimen- s ions of the pad .
Characteristics and purposes of the invention will be made still clearer by the following examples of its execution illustrated by drawings. Fig.1 Sanitary pad showing the straight side that remain outwards and the other with a central straight part and arched ends, front view. Fig.2 The same as Fig. I seen from the side. Fig.3 Sanitary pad with longitudinal flaps, front view. Fig. k The same as Fig. 3 seen from the side. Fig.5 Sanitary pad showing the arched side to remain outward, front view. Fig.6 The same as Fig. 5 seen from the side. Fig.7 Sanitary pad illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, with flaps, front view. Fig.8 The same as Fig. 7 seen from the side.
Fig.9 The sanitary pad in Fig. 7 with undulations like those that form when the pad is worn, front view. Fig.10 Plan view of the pad in Fig.9. Fig.11 A longitudinal section of female genital organs. Fig.12 As in Fig. 11 when the invented pad is worn.
The sanitary pad 10 comprises a flat substantially rec¬ tangular body 11 with a highly absorbent inner structure 12
covered with a filtering layer 13.
On the side 15 that penetrates inside the vestibule of the vulva the central part 16 is rectilinear and the ends 17 are curved. The opposite side to this one 18 is rectilinear.
A cord 21 is fixed to one longitudinal end 20 to faci¬ litate removal of the sanitary pad.
The pad 25 in Figs. 3 and 4, similar to the one in Figs. 1 and 2, exhibits two longitudinal flaps 26 and 27 that depart, facing opposite ways, from the longitudinal seam 28.
Said flaps will lie outside the labia majora. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a sanitary pad 30 similar to those precedingly described. The side 31, that will remain outside the vulva, exhi¬ bits a curve 32 which substantially corresponds to the external curvature of the labia majora. The cord 34 is fixed at the end 33. Fig. 7 and 8 illustrate a sanitary pad 40, the rectilinear side 47 of whose body 41 remains towards the outside of the vulva while the curved side 42 is made to adapt to the curve of the bottom of the vestibule. The longitudinal flaps 43, 44 created by the seam 45, depart on each side of the rectilinear edge. Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate the creases that are formed by the sanitary pad 40 in Figs. 7 and 8, creases that substantially correspond to those made when the pad is placed in the vestibule of the vulva. As may be seen, the flaps 43, 44 follow the outer curva- ture of the labia majora while the body 41 becomes undu¬ lated 46 that facilitate curving of the flaps. Fig.11 shows a section view of the female genital organs 50.
This illustrates the vulva 51, the bottom 52 of the ves¬ tibule of the vulva, the vagina 53, the urethral orifice 54, the clitoris 55, the labia minora 56, the labia ma- giora 57 and the anus 58. Fig. 12 shows how the sanitary pad 40 in Figs. 7-10 is fitted in together with an ordinary towel 60. In particular view 9 is represented again in Fig. I I. The cutaway part brings into view the labia minora 56 and the labia majora 57 on which rest the flaps 43 and 44 of the sanitary pad 40.
These illustrations clearly show how a light menstrual flow can be absorbed by the sanitary pad 40 subject of the invention. If the flow is heavier it is directed and transferred onto the ordinary type of sanitary towel- 60.
At one and the same time therefore, stagnation inside the vagina , caused by the generally used cylindrical plugs, is avoided together with undesirable spread of the flow out¬ side the vulva and even towards the anus as happens with sanitary towels and plugs at present in use.
