Description
A support device for a cable drum or the like
The invention relates to a support device for a cable drum or the like, said device comprising a carrying and transporting means for said drum.
Such a device for reeling and unreeling of cable is known from the Swedish patents 7603752-2 and 7901173-0, for example.
At the production of the cable it is reeled and unreeled on and off, respectively, drums with different working operations for the purpose of storing and distribution in lengths which are adapted to the customer.
To move cable drums long distances within industrial premises fork trucks or traverse cranes usually are used. According to the abovementioned Swedish patent 7901173-0 it is proposed that wheeled loading stools are used for transport of said drums. To move said drums shorter distances they are normally rolled on the floor of said industrial premises.
Great values are lost every year by damages on drums and goods upon transport with fork trucks and traverse cranes or by rolling said drums. With these handling methods the risk for personal damages is also great.
For big drums bulky and heavy apparatuses are requested for reeling and unreeling, said drums being lifted and rotated by said apparatuses.
Known devices for reeling and unreeling have a complicated construction and include normally strong columns, which are connected to each other by overhead beams and between which said drums must be lifted by means of power driven or hydraulically operated heavy bearing dowel pins which also must be displacably arranged laterally.
In addition to the rotation of the drum are mechanically driven carrier devices in which carrier pins manually are to be matched into holes or mountings in the flanges of the drum.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and secure support device for a cable drum which device permits the cable or the like to be easily reeled, stored, transported and unreeled.
This object is attained according to the invention in that said drum is stationary mounted freely rotatable around the centre axis thereof on said carrying and transporting means and in that said carrying and transporting means consists of bars connected to each other forming substantially a parallelepipedical construction, said bars substantially surrounding said drum.
The invention will become more apparent from the following description of preferred embodiments thereof shown, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a first
embodiment of a support device according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of two devices according to Fig. 1, wherein the possibility of stacking of the device is shown, Fig. 3 is an elevation view of a second embodiment of the device according to the invention, wherein the construction of the support device is simplified and wheeled, Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modification of the embodiment of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a detail view partially in section of another modification of the support device of Figs. 3 and 4, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of a further embodiment of the device according to the invention, wherein also the support device is simplified with regard to Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawings a drum for reeling, storing, transport and unreeling of cable or the like is generally indicated by reference 1. Said drum 1 is stationary mounted freely rotatable around the central axis thereof on a support device according to the invention including a frame 2. Said frame which principally is regarded as a carrying and transporting means for said drum consists in the embodiment according to Fig. 1 and 2 of a substantially parallelepipedical construction of bars. These bars which substantially surrounds said drum consist of four vertically oriented corner posts 3a, the corner posts to each other connecting horizontally oriented bars 3b and said drum carrying horizontally oriented bars 3c. By this construction of said frame it can be used with said drum and be handled as a container in transporting and storing. Thus, under its endurance, said cable drum is not to be separated from its frame provided that nothing unexpected happens. The frame is on its top provided with at least one upper contact surface and on its bottom with at least one lower contact surface, which is provided to abut against the upper contact surface on a further frame placed under said frame. It will be noted that the distance a between the upper and the lower contact surfaces on the frame preferably is greater than the greatest width of the flanges of said drum. Especially said frame is provided with projections 4 and recesses 5 on the bottom and on the top, respectively, or vice versa. The possibility of stacking of the device according to Fig. 2 is especially favourable when transporting and storing.
A carrier disc 6 is securely fastened on said drum and is used to drive said drum at the reeling and unreeling of cable. This carrier disc can of course be replaced by an arm or can be provided with holes to attain a more direct drive motion. Said carrier disc can also be omitted, whereby the driving can be done directly on said drum, for example on its flanges or on the cable which is reeled on said drum.
Said drum 1 is carried on a shaft 7, which is stationary joumalled
on said frame 2 and which at least at its ends is hollow to be able to receive dowel pins of conventional machines for reeling and unreeling of cable. This construction is meant to be omitted when the cable industry is standardized and is adapted to use support devices according to the invention.
Said frame 2 can also within the scope of the invention be movable on the ground by means of transport wheels 8. By means of said wheels 8 said frame 2 with its drum 1 can be moved in the directions which are shown with the arrow in Fig. 3.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the transport of a carriage 9 for said frame 2 with said drum 1 is effected in all directions transversely to the directions which are meant for said frame itself, said carriage being provided with carriage wheels 10 for this purpose. Said carriage 9 is as shown introduced under said frame 2, and lifting means 11 provided on said carriage 9 lifts said frame 2 with said drum 1 so that the transport wheels 8 of said frame 2 are spaced from the ground in the manner shown in Fig. 4.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 said frame 2 with said drum 1 is mechanically movable by a power drive 12 coupled to one or more transport wheels 8.
Fig. 6 shows an embodiment of the device according to the invention in which said frame 2 besides said transport wheels 8 is provided with wheels 13 which are directed perpendicular to said transport wheels 8 and which normally are spaced from the ground but arranged to be lowered by means of means (not shown), said frame 2 with said drum being lifted so that instead said transport wheels 8 are spaced from the ground and said wheels 13 presents a new motion direction which is substantially perpendicular to the direction attained by said transport wheels 8.
