eferring by 'cha'racters' to the draw' 1 represents a' standard tub, the bottom-'2 o} whichis provided preferably of, the cork 'type'. The tubv is Provided with standard legs 4 connected by enlarged detailed sectional p plan 7 wlth 'a drain nipple 3, the same belng normallyclo'sed by a-stopper suitable cross braces 5, the said legs by. their arrangement defining an interior space {or} circle within which the driving motor and i plane of the machine,
with the end Of said tubular bearing.
. spectivel all of the connected operating parts are disposed, so that none of such operating elements project beyond the circumferential and consequently are thus enclosed and protected from injury by contact with extraneous objects. I One of the legs has by means of screws 6'. Passing aperture of the strap is a thumb screw 7, which thumb screw is in threaded union with an aperture in a motor 9. The base ring of the motor 1salso formed with apertures 6", f whic apertures isfitted over a retaining screw 6 and the' other aperture over a lug 8', which extends from the juxtaposed face of the strap 6. The motor 9 is thus rigidly-but detachabl) secured to the leg of the tub by; a single thumbscrew 7 Hence, the assem lage can readily be effected and a standard motor can be utilized having its shaft provided with a vertically disposed pulley 9 for direct drive connections. I
It is understood that the bottom and side walls of the tub may be corrugated'in' any suitable manner -to facilitate washing, the corrugations being not shown as they form no part of my invention.
The center for the reception of the screw threaded end of a tubular-bearing or housing 10, the said bearingbeing provided with a shoulder 10 that is fitted snugly against the upper surface of the tub bottom. The/bearing 10 is firmly, fitted in ,its vertical position and. the joint between it and the bottom is sealed by a binding nut 11, whichnut is in threaded union tubular hearing or housing 10 is provided for the reception of a spindle 12, the lower end of which extends therethrough for the rece tion ofa spoke driving pulley 13. The, driiung pulley 13 is, struction, built up 7 having a metallic band or felly 15 secured to thelr outer ends, which band, in turn, has soldered thereon a belt receiving metallic ring 15'. Hence the belt receiving ring -'is reinforced and the pulley, as a whole, is
cheaply constructed and light. I t
The spokes 14 of the pulley are in mitered connection at their central intersection, at which point they are apertured for the reception of the threaded end 12 of the spindle 12. The spokes and pulley, as a whole, are held in rotative relation with the spindle by upper and lower clamping nuts 16 -16' rethere being suitable washers interposed tween the upper clamping nut and the lower end of the "assocla'ted tubular bear.-
in 10 to spindle. v
The upper end of the spindle 12 projects through the tubular bearing 10, and in order to effect a water tight joint at this point, a
limit longitudinal play of the fixed to its inner surface, a strap 6 through an" base ring 8 of an electr1c"19, -whichspokes are centrally apertured h th-imble 20, the said thimble of the tub bottom is apertured gage and gently 12, through action,
for cheapness in confrom wood spokes 14 mgi g1 ment, while at the same t me,
disk constituting side walls of perforated rnaterial, the'upper edges or mbuth portion of which areconbox 17 is provided, the same being in threaded union with the en tubular bearing; The power driven spindle 12 has rigidly secured thereto, at its upper end, a disk 18 from which extends a cran pin 18, as shown in Figure 1. 'When the machine is equipped for washing, the crank pin .18 has loosely mounted thereon, a skeleton agitator A. The agitator is constructed from cross connected wood spokes or threaded end of a eing clamped to thespokes by upper and lower nuts 21, whereby the spokes ofthe agitator are secured together and a metallic hub is formed, which hub is, as shown, detachably mounte upon the crank pin-18", to thereby produce a metal to metal contact between the drive and driven elements," it being understood that the lower clamping nut 21' also forms a thrust bearing.
the reception of the screw Prior to placing-the machine in operation,-
bearing .10. Thereafter the agitator is as shown in Figure dropped into position,
22, depend- 1, and a series of rounded fingers ing ,fromthe spokes of the agitator,'will enpress upon the clothing at.
various .points. Hence the agitator is capable ofv horizontal play or what might be termed, a floating action with relation to its wrist pin connection 18. i 1 c When motion is imparted to the spindle the belt drive connection to the motor, the agitator wilhdescribe awa due to the eccentric driving connection with the spindle, whereby the agitator has a planetary movement of rotation aboutits.axis. Hence-the fingers 22 will describe a series of independent rotary gyrations, imparting thereto a multiple series hing actions upon. the surface of thecloth- 'ving thereto a massaging gentle movethe continued action imparted to the agitator, whereby the clothing will be constantly shifted with relation to its position in the tub. A wringing or drying basket C is then substituted-in the machine for the agitator and the wet. fabrics placed a metallic the bottom thereof, having is preferably constructed from tractedinward a to nested therein prevent the clothing bble of scrubp as a whole, will cause it to move ma rotatory direction v therein for sub-- lectlon to y g peration. This basket om being discharged, by.
centrifugal action imparted to the basket.
The solid bottom of the basket has a metallic basket bottom has secured thereto a plate 24,
which plate has extending therefrom a pair f coupling pins that are arranged e uidistant from the hub aperture. Hence w en it is desired to fit the basket to the driving spindle of the tub, the operator adjusts the hub 23- of the basket to the crank pin 18, and in so doing, the basket is rotated about the pin in such position that an indicator markupon the end of the crank pin 18' will register -with a corresponding indicator mark upon the end plate of the hub 23. When this registration is effected, the pins 25 are positioned to' straddle the wrist pin disk 18, whereby the basket is locked against rotation upon the crank pin 18', and is centered axially with respect-to the spindle 12. Inasmuch as the horizontal plane in which the upstanding extractor C rotates is above that in which'the depending agitator or dolly A rotates, it is not necessary to empty the water after washing and before dryin the fabrics, but the water in the tub may fie used in a succeeding operation, if serviceable' After the clothin which has been previously washed, is ropped into the basket, motion being imparted thereto will cause said basket to revolve at a high speed through its direct connection to the spindle and in its rotations, the basket will develop a centrifugal force, whereby the clothing is caused to shift outwardly against the walls of said basket. This action of the clothing will efl'ectually extract all water therefrom. The dried clothes can then be removed and ironed if desired.
Attention is also directed to the fact that the cover B of the tub is formed from a single piece of metal, having a downturned annular lip 26 and acircular bead 26, which bead effects a nested seat with relation to the inner edge of the tub mouth, whereby a comparatively tight joint is efiected and the downturned lip 26 serves as a'protection and it also presentsa sightly appearance, whereby it will present a neat appearance when, not in use. The removable metallic -top can thus be used for a seat, table or drive mechanism other purposes incidental to household conveniences. r
While we have shown and described a simple exemplification of our invention minutely as to detail, it is understood that we may vary the details of construction, within the scope of the claims, as it may be hereafter interpreted by the skilled mechanic.
