SPARKING GAS-LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed July 14, 1910. Seria1.No. 571,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT B. GAR- MICHAEL, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sparking Gas-Lighters, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of this invention is to obtain a sparking gas lighter which may be operated by a child or woman with the hand of the operator in position not to be injured by the flame when the device is used for lighting a gas stove.
A further object of the invention is to obtain a device of the kind described which will produce a large number of sparks some of which will be in proper location to ignite gas escaping from a gas-jet or stove.
A further object is to obtain a device of the kind named which may also be used to turn a gas cook when the same is beyond the reach of the hands of the person operating the device.
A further object is to obtain a simple, easily constructed and inexpensive device, and one not liable to get out of order.
I have illustrated in elevation, two constructions embodying this invention in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, parts thereof being shown in vertical section to expose the movable parts to view. In Fig. 1 the element engaging with the gas cock is omitted, said element being shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A, Fig. '1, is a frame preferably formed up of a strip of metal.
a is one end of frame A. B is a tube provided with screw threads I) at both ends thereof. C, C, are caps respectively pro vided with internal screw threads engaging with screw threads 5. D, D, are rivets secured in the ends of caps C respectively. The rivets D fit looselyin the holes pro vided therefor in frame A so that said caps may be turned and thereby screwed onto or off from tube B. E, E, are springs in tube B. F, F, are members forming, conjointly against a projection or abutment on member G and the other end against tube B. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1 said projection or abutment is formed by pin I. J is a bar, movable on frame A, and K is a connection attached at one of its ends to bar J and at the other to member G.
To use the device end a of frame A is placed in the palm of the hand and bar J is grasped by one or more fingers of said hand. A spark is obtained by drawing bar J down toward the end (1 against the resiliency of spring H, and then releasing said bar to be returned to its initial position by said spring. The operation is repeated until the gas is ignited by the sparks formed during said operation by the spark producing members F, G.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 2 the frame A consists of a tube having plug a in one end thereof, and provided with circular apertures nearthe other end for tube B to be inserted therethrough. a are slots near plug a in which the bar J may be moved. I is the abutment on member G, and is provided with recess 2' which fits over the thumb piece of an ordinary gas cook. K is the connection bet-ween bar J and member G and is joined to said member by pin 70.
One of the members F (see Fig. 1) and one of the springs E may be omitted from the device, but I prefer to use both of said members F and both of the springs E, as thereby sparks are made on both sides of member G. V
I claim 1. A frame consisting of a U shaped member, in combination with a tube provided with apertures through the wall thereof, adjustable caps on the ends of the tube, said caps rotatably mounted on the legs of the frame, springs in the tube, a file member longitudinally movable in said apertures, a spring yieldingly holding the file member in its initial position, spark producing members in the tube yieldingly held in contact with the file member by the springs in said tube, a bar movably mounted on the legs of the frame adjacent and parallel to the closed end of said frame, and a connection between the bar and the file member.
2. A frame consisting of a U shaped member in combination with a tube provided with apertures through the wall thereof, an adjustable cap at one end of the tube, said caps rotatably mounted on the legs of the frame, a file member longitudinally movable in said apertures, a spring yieldingly holding the file member in its initial position, a spark producing member in the tube, means to yieldingly hold the spark producing member in contact with the file member, a manually operated bar movably mounted on the legs of the frame adjacent and parallel to the closed end of 10 said frame, and a connection between the bar and the file member.
DWIGHT B. CARMICHAEL. In the presence of CHARLES TURNER BROWN, CORA A. ADAMS. 4
