JOHN H. MOWEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO NEW YORK AND BROOKLYN CASKET 00., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CASKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MownN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to burial caskets or the like, in which the cover is made with a removable horizontal top section and a relatively fixed section adjacent thereto.
The particular object of my invention is to so construct the said cover, that when the removable section is in position the point at which said section engages the relatively fixed section is hidden from view.
A further object of my invention is to fashion the one end of the fixed section which comes adjacent to the end of the removable section so as to present a neat, finished, and even an ornamental appearance when the removable section is not in place. In prior constructions the covers of caskets of the kind to which my invention relates have been provided with a heavy saddle located adjacent to the point of connection between the two sections, which saddle presented hard and ugly lines at all times and which made the cover extremely heavy and awkward to handle.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a casket constructed according to my invention and taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section of a portion of the cover.
In the drawings 1 represents the body of the casket and 2 the cover thereof, which may be secured in position in any suitable and well-known manner. The upper horizontal portion of said cover 2 comprises a fixed section 3 and the relatively removable section 4. The end face of the section 8 which engages the section 4; when said section 4 is in position, is preferably finished with a molding 5, which may be either ornamental or plain. The section 3 is preferably provided with an extension 3 which projects beneath the section 4: and forms a support for the one end of said section 4.
6 and 7 are ornamental scrolls, which are Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntefl June 20 1911 Application filed August 6, 1909.
Serial No. 511,498.
secured to the section 3 in any suitable manner as by pasting, screwing, or otherwise. The ornamental scroll 6, as can be readily seen by referring to Fig. 1, extends over the molding 5 and projects beyond the free edge thereof. The scrolls G and 7 and the molding 5 may be made of any suitable cheap plastic material as for instance wood pulp, paper pulp, or the like, covered with a suitable material. The scrolls 6 and 7 in their finished condition are somewhat pliable so as to be readily adaptable to any particular form of cover. l/Vhen the removable section 4 is in position on the cover, the one end thereof extends beneath the scroll 6, so that said scroll 6 obscures from view the point of engagement of said section 4 with the molding 5. The oppositeend of said section l may be secured in position by a suitable catch 8.
If it is desired to remove the section 4:, the catch 8 is first released, after which said section 4: may be readily pulled from beneath the molding 6 and removed. In replacing said section in position, the one end thereof is first inserted under the molding 6, after which the opposite end is engaged with the catch 8. The scrolls 6 and 7 as well as the molding 5 are very light in weight and of an ornamental finish, so that even when the section 4 is removed the remaining section 3 presents a neat, and ornamental appearance, the scrolls 6 and 7 having the appearance of being formed directly on the up per portion of the cover. If desired the space 9 between the scrolls 6 and 7 may be used to accommodate an inscription plate. In caskets constructed according to my invention, when both sections are in position, no division line is visible and the cover has the appearance of having a solid, one-piece top.
The present invention does away with the use of the customary heavy saddle heretofore used so that the cover is not excessively heavy and is easily handled.
Although I have described the scrolls 6 and 7 as being separate elements I wish it distinctly understood that the said scrolls may be formed in one piece with the cover section 3. The end of said section instead of having the molding 5 applied thereto might itself be finished in an ornamental manner. I further desire it to be understood that the term scroll used in the specification or claims is intended to cover any ornamental or other device suitable for the purpose intended.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A casket having a body and a cover for said body comprising a removable section and a relatively fixed section both extending in the same plane and having their adjacent ends in engagement with each other, one of said sections having a portion arranged in an adjacent parallel plane and projecting beyond and over the point of engagement of said sections.
2. A casket comprising a body, a cover for said body provided with a removable section and a relatively fixed section adjacent thereto, a molding extending along the one edge end of said fixed section, which en gages the removable section and a strip of material secured to said fixed section and projecting over and beyond the said molding so as to conceal the line of engagement of said sections.
3. A casket having a body and a cover comprising a removable and a relatively fixed section extending in the same plane and having their adjacent ends in engagement with each other, a projection on one of said sections arranged in a plane adjacent to and parallel with that of the section and extending over the other section beyond the point of engagement of said sections and another projection on one of said sections arranged in a plane adjacent to and parallel with that of the section and extending under the other section beyond the point of engagement of said sections.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. MOXVEN. lVitnesses E. O. PEOPLES,
