Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed January 10, 1910. Serial No. 537,106.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN PQLYON; a
citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Im-' provement in J ar-Clos'ures, and declare the.
following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to' the accompanying drawings; which form a part oft-his specification.
This invention relates to jar closures.
It has for its object an improved jar closllig cap and means for securing the same in p ace.
. In the drawings :--F igure 1., is a side elevation of the jar and cap. Fig. 2, is a reverse plan view of the cap. Fig. 3, is a plan View of the jar moutl. Fig. 4, is a cross section of the jar at the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a cross section at the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
On the neck of the jar and external thereto slightly below the upper surface are cast a number of lugs 1, l, 2, 2. Between the lugs are passages 3. The lugs 1 have their upper surface substantially parallel with the upper'surface. of the jar mouth and their under surfaces 5 also substantially parallel with the upper surface of the jar mouth. The locking lugs 52 which alternate-with the lugs 1 have their upper surface substantially parallel with the jar mouth and their under surfaces 4 inclined thereto, taking the form on this surface of a small sized arc of a screw of quite short pitch.-
The cover or cap 6 is. made with indented portions 7 whose upper surface inside the cover is adapted to engage with the locking lug 2, and with the main body of that portion of the cover which is forced in by the indentation engaging beneath the lug and witha bearing surface 8 adapted to engage closely against the mutilated screw surface 4 and force the cap closely down with the tabular artof the cap bearing against the upper edge of the jar mouth with an inter posed gasket or disk. The lugs l are made with an outer contour to engage closely with in the rim of the cap 6. Preferably, the
extreme outer surface of the lug is extended slightly at its middle part beyond the line of a true circle having the center 10 more distant from the center than the length of a radius which will cut the point 5 at the end of the lug, the object of this expansion being to prevent the web of the flange of the cap 6 from straightening, or tending toward a straight linewhen it isforced to position with the inturned surface above the indentation 7 engaging under the locking lug 2, and in order that the lugs 5'may have an extent as large as possible, the passage 3 between the-lugs 1 and 2 should be only sufficient to allow the indented part of the cap to pass freely between. The number of indentations and corresponding lugs is not material, provided there be at least four in all, in order that any tendency of the metal cap. to become more or less oblong under the strain on at least two points, diametrically located, may be counteracted by the presence at each side-of other lugs.
What I claim is 1. A jar closure, having in combination a jar provided with separate lugs surrounding themouth thereof, having alternate locking lugs provided on their under surface each with an inclined face, a cap having a hang ing flange and indentations therein corresponding'to said lugs, the upper limit of the indentations being adapted to engage under the said lugs, and with the lugs alternating the locking lugs each with its middle part extended beyond the line of a true circle whereby each is adapted to bear against the hanging flange intermediate the indent-ations, substantially as described.
2. A jar'closure, having in combination a jar provided with so arated lugs surroundmg the mouth thereof, alternate ones of said separated lugs being provided on their under surface-each with an inclined face whereby a cap may be locked in its. position over the top of the jar, a cap having a hanging. flan e and with indented portions therein, with t e surface inclined on the upper face of each of said indented portions and with the lugs alternating the locking lugs on said jar mouth "extended at their middle point be- I In testimony whereofflsign'tliis speeifi'ae ylond tllelcurvature ofda true OiIiCIGiIWhGIiGby tion in. the presence. of two witnesses. tie sai ugs interme iate the 0c in u s 1 are adapted to engage against the ha ngi g JULIAN LYON 5 flange intermediate the indentations and Witnesses:
force the said indentations securely under CHARLES F. BURTON, the locking lu'g, substantially as described. WILLIAM M. SWAN.
