Description

tlltitml (Sttte I* me elim.
Letters Patent No. 97,295, dated No'vembew` 30, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADS OR HOUSING-S FOR HAARNESS-SADDLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To `all persons to whom these presents may come Beit known that I, CHARLES BIRMINGHAM HOGG, of Bostonfof the county of Snolk, and State of Massnchusetts, have invented a new and useful Improve# ment in Pads or Housings forHarness-Saddles; and do lhereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation,
Figure 2, a front view, and
Figure 3,11. transverse section of one of my improved pads.
The Yloops of the common harness-saddle pads or .housings being inelastic, often cause the housing'to fit badly to the saddle-straps, or yto work laterally thereon, so as to wear or det'ace the housing.
In carrying out my invention, I make each of the loops elastic, by fastening to its ends a spring, arranged within the pad, and for the purpose, I prefer to make use of a piece of India-rubber or elastic banding.
In the drawings- A denotes a pad or housing of the ordinary kind and shape, it being provided, or not, with en inside lining of Water-proof cloth, or other suitable material, its outside covering, a, being glazed leather or cloth. The two side-loops of the pad are shown at B B.
i. Each of them extends through two slits, b b, made in the covering a, and has its ends fastened to a spring, o, arranged within the pad, such spring heilig of the character as herenbefore described.'
The spring not only allows the loop to stretch so as' to accommodate itself to a `saddle-strap, but causes the loop to lit so closely to the strap as to prevent the housing from moving independently of the saddle, so as to become scratched or chafed thereby.
I claim, as my invention- The arrangement and lcombination of the spring o with the pad A and its loops B, the whole being substantially as described.
-GHARLES BIRMINGHAM HOGG.
