To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD Mc- KENZIE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Brandon, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seed-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved seed case and has for its primary object a simple, inexpensive and strong device for holding seeds which may be easily and quickly opened or closed as desired.

The construction of my invention enables the user to close the case within a minimum space for shipping and storing purposes and provides means for effectively displaying a large number of packages of seeds.

My invention comprises three main elements, the body A, crate B, and supporting elements C which are employed to hold the parts of the device in open position.

The body A consists of a rectangular casing bounded by five sides, 3 representing a floor, 1 a back, 5 a top and (3 and 7 ends. These assembled walls leave an opening 8 in the front through which a drawer 9 slides into the casing. The drawer 9 is intended to be used for holding packages of seeds or seeds in bulk as desired and is provided with a lock which automatically holds the drawer out or open until it is moved out of the path of the drawer so that the latter may be closed. This lock consists of a hinged member 10 pivoted upon a leaf 11 which is mounted upon the back of the casing. A small opening 12 in the back of the casing is provided for inserting a finger of the handand raising the hinged member 10 to the top of the casing out of the path of the drawer.

Mounted upon the top 5 of the casing near the front thereof and secured by means of hinges 13 thereto is the crate B. This crate has three rigid sides 1 t, 15 and 16 and a bottom 17. The top of the crate and front side are sectional, the lower section 18 of the front being rigid with the crate and be ing substantially vertical when the crate is in inclined position and open as illustrated in Fig. 1. In the crate are a pluralit of longitudinal partitions 19 extending from the front to the back thereof and between said partitions and part of said partitions and sides 14k and 15 are inserted in slots 20, (see Figs. (3 and 7,) short transverse partitions 2t. These transverse partitions rest in substantially vertical position when thecrate is open and each is formed with two horizontal flanges 22 which are turned back from the main portion thereof and act as a floor for each compartment in the crate.

The supporting means for holding the crate in superior position when the seed case is open, consists of a pair of downwardly declining braces 23 and 24: the upper ends of which are pivotally secured at 25 to the sides let and 15 of the crate leaving said braces free to turn up over the sides 11- and 15 as illustrated in Fig. 2. These braces are held rigidly by a transverse board 26 which is sccnrt-al to their lower edges. The lower extremities of the braces 23 and 21 are chantfered at; 27 so as to rest firmly upon the top of the body as illustrated in Fig. 1. Secured to the lower portions of the braces by means of hinges 28 is a pair of supporting arms 29 and 30 upon the outer edges of which are secured a transverse section 31 of the cover of the crate B. The upper ends of the braces are provided with a section 32 of the front wall of the casing the ends of said braces being beveled as illustrated so that the section 32 will close tightly over the front of the crate. WVhen the seed case is in open position (see Fig. 5) the section 32 impinges against the back wall 16 of the crate. A stop 33 and lug 33 are carried by the wall 16 of the crate and the section 32 is perforated at 84 to receive said lug. A but ton 35 pivoted upon said lug may be turned to engage the section 31 of the cover and hold the crate and the supports upon which the section 31 is mounted in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. A spring catch 36 mounted upon the top of the body A near its back serves to engage the lower edge of the transverse board 26 and assist in holding the supports and braces extended in superior position as shown in Fig. 1. The remaining portion of the top of the crate which is not closed by the sections 31 and 32 is adapted to be closed by a section 37 which forms part of the cover and is secured to the upper edge of the back wall 16 permanently by the hinges 38. The inner surface of the section 37 may serve to display advertisements or printed matter setting forth what the seed case contains. In closed position the drawer is slid into the body and the crate turned down on the body as illustrated in Fig. 2 with the sections 31 and 32 and 37 of the cover closed and the braces 23 and 24: and supports 29 and 30 folded over the side walls 14: and 15 of the crate. The lower portions 89 of the outer sides of the walls 14: and 15 are built out flush with the outer surfaces of the braces and arms as illustrated so as to reinforce the strength of said walls and provide a smooth outer surface on the ends of the crate flush with the folded. arms.

The construction set forth produces a compact package when closed and is adapted to effectively expose and display the contents of the crate when the case is open.

In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is 1. A device of the class set forth, comprising, a body, a drawer in said body, a crate hinged at its forward end to the forward portion of the top of said body and adapted to be raised in inclined position or to swing down on said top in closed position, a brace hinged between the ends of a side of said crate having its free end adapted to impinge against the top of said body to assist in supporting said crate in inclined positioii and to swing up upon said side when the crate is turned down upon the body and a supporting arm hinged to the free end of said brace having cover sections thereon adapted to rest against the upper end of said crate when the latter is raised, said arm being adapted to turn over the side of the crate when the latter rests upon the top of the body with said cover sections over the front and top of said crate to assist in closing the latter, for the purposes specified.

A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination, a body, a drawer in said body, a crate hinged at its forward end to the forward portion of the top of said body to permit its being turned down upon said top or inclining upwardly upon said body, a pair of braces hinged to the side walls of said crate between its front and back the free ends of said braces being adapted to impinge against the top of said body to assist in supporting the crate in inclined position or to fold over the side walls of said crate in closed position, a pair of supporting arms hinged near their ends to the free ends of said braces, transverse cover sections secured across said supporting arms, said arms being adapted to fold over the sides of said crate when the latter is in closed position with said sections assisting in closing the front and top of said crate, means detachably securing one of said cover sect-ions to the back of said crate to assist in supportin the free end of said crate inclined above said body and a cover section adapted to complete the closure of said crate when in folded condition upon said body.

8. In a device of the class set forth, a drawer, a casing into which said drawer is adapted to close, and a hinge having a leaf adapted to drop in the path of said drawer in said casing and block the path of the drawer in its return passageway; said cas ing having an opening in its inner end through which said leaf of said hinge may be raised out of the return path of said drawer.
