Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed May 24, 1909. Serial No. 497,918.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, .FRANK FULL'ENKAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Recovery, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mold, of which the 'following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved construction of mold `and the invention relates more particularly to that class of molds which are employed in the manufacture of fence posts from plastic material.
One aim of the invention is to provide a mold of this class so constructed that its walls may be readily swung down to permit of the removal of a finished post, the means provided for holding these walls in set up position while the material ot' the post is setting, being simple in its construction but capable of being readily and quickly manipulated to permit of removal of the post and being also arranged to properly relatively position the walls of the mold.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mold constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the mold in open position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through one end wall of the mold, and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but taken also through a portion of one end of the side walls of the mold.
In the drawings, the mold is shown as comprised in part of a bottom wall or pallet board which is indicated by the numeral 5, side walls which are indicated by the numeral 6, an upper end wall 7, and a lower end pallet board 8. The wall 5 of the mold is tapered from one end to the other as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, as are also the side walls 6 of the mold and these side walls are hinged at the lateral edges of the pallet board or bottom wall 5 as indicated by the numeral 9 so that they may be swung either open to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings or to a position at right angles to the same whereby to afford a box-like structure into which the plastic material of the post is introduced. When in the angular position stated, the side walls 6 are supported at their mid length through the medium of a hook 10 pivoted at the extremity of one of the hinges and engageable at its end in an eye 11 formed at the extremity of one leaf of the opposite hinge as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The disposal of the end walls 7 and 8 against and their connection with the side walls of the mold serves to effectually brace these side walls at their ends against folding down when they have been moved to set up position, and this connection of the end walls with the side walls is had, in part, throughthe medium of hooks 12 which are pivoted upon eyes 120 in the inner faces of the end walls and engage with eyes or pins 13 upon the outer faces of the side walls as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. These hooks, as will be readily understood, serve to hold the end walls in place against the ends of the side walls and in so doing` the eyes 11 in which they are hung also hold the side walls in upright or set up position as above stated, the said end walls being disposed upon the ends of the bottom wall 5, which project beyond the ends of the side wall 6 as will be observed from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings. At each end bf each side wall G there is a stud 14 and se- 'cured upon the inner face. of each end wall 7 and S are parallel strips 15 formed with sockets 16 in which the studs 1-L of the respective side walls 6 engage when the said walls are in set-up position and the end walls are disposed thereagainst. From the foregoing it will be seen that when the side walls G of the mold are in upright or set-up position and the end walls 7 and 8 are hooked against the ends thereof the side walls will be held at ltheir midlength by the hook 10 and eye 11 and at their ends by the studs 14 and sockets 16, and spreading is avoided.
Secured in parallel relation upon the outer face of the lower end wall 8 of the mold box in vertical position are strips 17 of angle iron through the outstanding wings of which are passed clamping bolts 18 carried by clips 18 and the said end wall 8 of the mold is formed with openings through which are engaged the ends of reinforcing wires indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings by the numeral 19. Similar strips 20 are secured on the outer face of the end wall 7 of the mold and these strips carry clamping bolts and clips 21 which are positioned one opposite each of several openings 22 formed through the said' end wall 7 The reinforcing wires 19 are engaged at their other ends through the openings 22 and through openings formed in the attached wings of the strips 2O and between the clips 21 and the outstanding wings of the said strips whereupon the clamping bolts are tightened to clamp the said ends of the wires firmly in place. After this has been done, the wires are stretched by being pulled through the openings in the end wall 8 of the mold and are clamped in stretched condition between the clip 18 and the outstanding wing of the strip 17. After being so firmly 'clamped in the mold, the wires are preferably kinked adjacent each end as indicated by the numeral 23, any suitable tool being employed for this purpose. By so kinking the reinforcing wires 19, they will be more securely embedded in the post after it has become hardened.
In addition to the reinforcing wires above described, the mold is formed in its side walls with openings Q4 in which are inserted the legs of U-shaped wire ties 25. The said side walls are further formed with openings 2G through which may be inserted wooden cores for molding in the post openings into which may be forced 0r inserted plugs to permit of the nailing of boards or the like to the post if desired. It `will be observed from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings that the wire ties 25 are formed each of a single strand of wire bent upon itself at a point between its ends to form spaced legs and a connecting portion a'nd that these spaced legs are inserted through the openings 26 in the side walls of the mold box and that the connecting portion of each of the wire ties lies beyond one of the said side walls of the mold boX, this connecting portion being grasped and the ties being pulled from the boX and the post therein When the said post has hardened or set. After the completed post is removed from the mold box, the legs of the wire ties are again inserted in the post in the openings left therein by their withdrawal therefrom and the terminals of these legs may then be twisted around wires to be supported upon the post, the said terminals projecting beyond one face of the postas will be readily understood.
IV hat is claimed is In a fence post mold, the combination with a pallet board, side walls, end walls having' openings for reinforcing wires, and means for holding said parts in place; of angle iron strips each having one wing secured to the outer face of an end wall and the other standing alongside an opening therein, a bolt through the outstanding wing, and a wire clip' carried by said bolt, for the purpose set forth.
