NITED STATES PATENT CFFlCE.
MAGAZINE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE O. DUFFY, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to temporary binders or covers for magazines and the like, and the principal object of the same is to provide a binder that will have a firm engagement with the magazine, yet readily permit the opening and closing of the same, and which can be easily removed from the magazine when desired.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features of the same are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved binder, shown open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line X-X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line g/-gh Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 9., but showing a magazine within the binder.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, 1 1 designates the cover leaves of the binder which are connected by the usual flexible back Q. A flat reinforcing strip 3 extends longitudinally of the inner surface of said back 2, said strip having a recessed portion 4 adjacent one end. A flat plate 5 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the inner face of the strip 3, one end of said plate extending well beyond one end of the strip 3 and provided with an opening 6 by means of which the binder may be suspended from a nail, hook, or other support. The plate 5 has outstanding side flanges 7 which are arranged on a slight inward inclination, said flanges being of the same length as the strip 3, one end of each flange aring outwardly as indicated at S to provide a tapering entrance way between said flanges which facilitates the sliding of the back of a magazine therein.
A Hat leaf spring 9 is located within the recess 4 of the strip 3, one end of said spring being riveted or otherwise rigidly fastened Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 19, 1909.

Serial No. 523,471.
to said strip, the other end of said spring being bent at right angles thereto to provide a locking tongue 10 that projects through an opening 11 in the plate 5 and is adapted for interlocking engagement with a notch 12 formed in the back 13 of the magazine.
To place a magazine in the binder, the back thereof is notched and then pushed through the Haring entrance way of the gripping flanges 7, the locking tongue 10 of the spring 9 being held depressed until the back of the magazine passes thereover and brings the notch into position where it will be engaged by said locking tongue. To release the magazine, a knife or the like may be passed between the pages to force .the tongue 9 from engagement with the notch in the back of the magazine, whereupon, the said back may be readily slid from between said flanges.
lVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of cover leaves, a flexible back connecting the same, a recessed reinforcing strip mounted on said back, a plate covering said strip and provided with gripping flanges, said plate being also provided wit-h an opening which communicates with the recess of said strip, and a spring within said recess having one end fastened to said plate the other end of said spring being bent at right angle to provide a locking tongue that normally projects through the opening of said plate for engagement with the back of a magazine.
2. A device of the character described comprising` a cover, a plate carried thereby and provided with outstanding gripping flanges, one end of said flanges being outwardly liared, and a spring tongue projecting through said plate for detachable locking engagement with a magazine held between said gripping flanges.
8. A device of the character described comprising cover leaves having a flexible back connection, a reinforcing strip carried by said hack, a plate mounted on said strip and having a projecting end provided with a suspending opening, gripping flanges carried by the side of said plate, and a locking tongue projecting through said plate.
4. A device of the character described comprising cover leaves, a back therefor, a plate carried by said back, outstanding inwardly inclined gripping flanges at the side of said plate, one end of said flanges being outwardly flared, and a locking tongue project-ing I right angles to provide a locking tongue through said plate for engagement with a magazine between said flanges.
5. A device of the Character described comprising Cover leaves, a back therefor, a reinforcing strip carried by said back and provided with a recess, a holding plate mounted on said strip and provided with an opening, a spring in said recess and having one end fastened to the under surface of said plate, the other end of said spring being bent at that normally projects through said opening and adapted for engagement with the back ot' an article seated on said plate.
In testimony whereof` I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
