Description
- aient dimite CHARLES L. TH-IE'RY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent N 96,632
, lated November l), 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE OF WATCH-CASES.
The Schedule rcfened to in these Letters Patentend making pazt of the same Be it known that I, CHARLES L. Tulum', of Boston, in the county of Suliolk, and State ot' Massachusetts, have made an invention' ol'a new and useful Manufacture ot' Watch-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the tollowing, taken in connection with the drawings which aceompairf and form part otthis specification, is a description of my invention, sulicient; to enable those skilled in the art to practise it. P i
Figures 1 and .2 are cross-sectione` ot' a watch-case, in the production ol' which my invention is embodied.
Hcretothre. \\'atf -.hcases have heen made up ot' several pieces of metal, and brazed or soldered together.
'l`hevcentre,n so called1 is made ot' a strip of metal, bentinto a circle, and its ends ahutted together and hrazed, the glass-iurzcl, so called, being produced iu the same way.
ln watches oi' English nianuthcture, the hack and centre are inmnwahle; that is to say, the hack is not, as iu Swiss and American watches, hinged to the centre, so as to he opened, but. is formed in an independent piece, and brazedto such centres.
My invention is applicable to cases of any manufacture but is especially valuable in the manutact-ure of llnglish mich-cases.
` Tin ention consists in thrming the different portions o't a watch-case. in homogeneous pieces ot' metal, without', joints or solder. For inst-ance, ill prmlucing a. case for watches of English make, the hack and centre are struck up or produced in one entire homogeneous piece of mctal, the glass-bezel being formed in the same way, and applied in the usual manner.
For American; Swiss, or other watches, ewith the back and dial-cover hinged to the centre, thelatter is to he st-ruck up, orotherwise produced. from n homogeneous piece of metal, the glass-bezel, as before mentioned, being produced in the' same way, and ap plied in the manner now common to watches.`
In the accompanying dmwings, I have adopted an English watch-case with which to illustrate my invention, the centre of such case being shown at a and its hack at b, such parts7 as before mentioned, being produced, by proper machinery, from one piece of metal,` and wit-hout; joints or solder.
Fig. 2, of the drawings, is a. section taken through the longest area ot' the' centre77 ot' the ease, this centr'e," in itself, heilig the saine, whether applied to an English or other-manuthctured case. As will be perceived, this centre in one solid piece of metal, without joint or seam.
lhc advantages ot' my invention are comprised iu a few words, the watch-case produced by means of it being cheaper and better than any hcretotbre made. Cheaper, because il; is produced, by suitable machinery, from a plain sheetot` metal, in a fraction ot' the time now required to prmluee it; and better, in that it has no seams` which require very nice litting, or solder, to brake those scams.
Claim.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters'latent, is-
.lhe mz'umfacturc of watch-cases. in the manner shown aud described.
CHARLES L. THIERY.
Witnesses:
FRED. CURTxs, E. H. HEWINS.
