SHIP-TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST M. GUsTAF- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bisbee, in the county of Cochise and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ship-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables, and more particularly to that class of tables adapted for use on shipboard.
The object of this invention is to con struct a table which will remain level should the ship roll from port to starboard, and at the same time keep its equilibrium during any fore and aft motion. This construction makes it possible for the table to take up all undue motion which may occur in the course of a sea voyage.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a transverse section of a table constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is a persepective view of the pivotal attaching means for the individual tables.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a standard having the diverging legs 2, said diverging legs being bent angularly at their lower extremities to provide the feet 3 which are secured to the deck by the bolts 4. At the upper extremity of the legs 2 of the standard is the U- shaped element 5, through the arms of which passes the bolt 6, said bolt forming a bearing surface for the pivotal pins of the table. A rectangular frame 7 forming the main supporting element of the table is pivotally mounted on the supports 1. Adj acent each support and located transversely between the longitudinal sides of the frame are the transverse beams 8, to which are secured the pivotal pins 9 journaled in the U-shaped element 5 of the standards 1. A series of coinciding brackets 10 are spaced on the longitudinal sides of the frame 7 and pivotally support at their upper extremities the tables 11 by the plate 17 having the countersink projection 18 thereon said projection provided with the coinciding open- Specification of Letters Patent.

ings 19 therein, being oppositely secured to the under side of the table, the projection thereof extending in the recesses formed in said tables. The pins 12 are then driven through the edges of the table, the openings 19 and the upper terminal of the bracket 10 disposed in said projection 18. Carried on the under surface of each table by the supporting plate 13 is the rod 1 1, said rods being connected by a longitudinally extending bar 15 attached thereto. At the lower extremities of the rods 14 are the balls 16 threaded on the lower extremities of the rods and forming a balancing weight for the tables 11. This construction permits the frame to seek an equilibrium transversely through the instrumentality of the balancing weight and retain the individual tables 11 level when the ship rolls from fore to aft; but upon a change of the motion of the ship to from port to star-board, the tables will adapt themselves to this motion through the provision of pivotally mounting the individual tables to the frame 7. In this manner it is not necessary to place the tables in any peculiar position on the deck, but makes it possible to locate the same in any locality, the tables always remaining level.
Having thus fully described my invention,.what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a series of supports, each support comprising a pair of diverging legs adapted to be secured to the deck, having at their upper extremities a U-shaped element provided with a transverse bolt through the arms thereof, of a rectangular frame pivotally mounted on said supports through the instrumentality of transverse bars carrying pins adapted to be journaled in said U-shaped element and bear on said bolts, a series of coinciding spaced brackets attached to the longitudinal sides of said frame, a plurality of tables pivotally mounted on said brackets, and a series of simultaneously operating weights carried on the under surface of said tables.
