WILLIS W. RUSSELL, OF HIGHLAND PARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO MARY N. RUSSELL, OF MIDI-TOWN, NEW JERSEY.
PLAYING OR GAME CARD.
Application filed March 19,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLrs V. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland Park, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Playing or Game Cards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the standard pack of playing cards bearing the conventional characters and containing thefour suits, hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades and the denominations of each of these suits being the ace, king, queen, jack, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three and two besides the joker Which makes the universally popular pack containing fifty-three cards; but while my invention is particularly intended to add an extra card to this standard pack, the extra card is applicable to use in any pack of greater or less or any number of playing cards bearin the conventional characters such as pinochTe and euchre decks and all decks of cards having less than fifty-three cards as well as such decks of cards like the deck which contains in addition to the fifty-three cards of the standard pack the two denominations of eleven and; twelve spots.
My invention and addition to any existing pack of conventional playing cards consists of an extra card, which I will designate as the substitute which bears the characters of the denominations and suits as shown in Figure 1 but which may be arranged in any other manner desirable.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a pack of conventional playing cards with the substitute card lying on top making my improvement 011 containing fifty-four cards. Fig. 2 shows the face view of any card desired which is replaced by the extra card. Fig. 3 shows a manner of placing the substitute card into use.
Such substitute card comprises my improvement in the fifty-three card conventional pack making one containing fifty-four cards; but this extra card can be utilized with different characters printed thereon Specification of Letters Patent.

according to the denominations of the cards composing the ack.
In the case of any card which might have been damaged, marked or lost from the pack it would be impossible to utilize the pack of fifty-three cards without the corn venience of having the substitute card.
The substitute card laced in use as a substitute for the card which has been damaged or lost from the pack, and the circle around a particular pip representing the denomination required is one way of utilizing the extra card, in order that the damaged pack can be used for all ames for which the fifty-three card conventlonal pack of cards is used. This circle described around the pip is not the only manner of carrying out this invention but the designation can be reached by any kind of a mark desirable to the owner of the pack of cards.
The basic principle of my invention is the making of a standard conventional pack of cards to contain fifty-four cards instead of fifty-three as has been the custom.
My invention is intended to benefit the manufacturer, the merchant, the retailer and the consumer. It is a Well known fact that no matter how much care may be exercised by the manufacturer ininspecting his packs of playin cards for im erfections, very frequently pac (s of cards wi I reach the merchant and from him to the consumer, that are defective and the principal trouble with which, most generally is the absence of one of the cards, caused through the careless ness of the inspection in the manufactory. My invention, therefore, saves a great deal of ex ense, time and trouble for all concerne in the sale and use of a defective pack of cards by the substitute card which will correct the largest parts of these difliculties.
This invention is applicable not only to the ordinary packs of cards but can be applied to cards or games of any variety, such for example as packs containing less than fifty-two or fifty-three cards, also double packs like pinochle, skat, bezique, or any other kind or variety of pack of cards such as euchre, authors, logomachy, roulette and others.
I claim 1. A deck of playing or game cards in- -maining cards of the deck.
2. As a new article of manufacture a substitute card adapted to replace any one of l the cards of a deck of'playing'cards and provided with indications of the suits and denominations of the various' cards of the deck.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 15 my hand in the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
WILLIS W. RUSSELL.
